To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK J. LOVERING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Octavia, in the county of Butler and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Handling Racks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in apparatus for handling racks, and has for its object to provide a device of the character specified especially adapted for placing and removing hay racks and wagon bodies from the running gears of wagons, wherein a wheel supported standard is provided, having means for lifting the rack or body one end at a time and placing it on the running gear, the wheels of the rack having means for preventing skidding movement thereof during the lifting of the load.

The present embodiment of the invention is shown in connection with the running gear 1 of a wagon and a rack 2 of usual construction. The apparatus comprises a standard, which is composed of two spaced approximately parallel bars 1 connected at their tops by a block and connected at their bottoms by a cross bar 3, the said bars being spaced apart from each other and secured to the opposite edges of the bars 1. The bars 1 are braced against the ends of the bars 3 by means of inclined braces 4, and axles 5 are journaled in the ends of the bars 3 and of the braces 4:.

Wheels 6 are arranged on the axles, and each wheel, as shown more particularly in Figs. 2 and 3, is provided at one face with a radial continuous flange 7 the flange being at the edge of the rim of the wheel, and being of sufficient depth to prevent ski ding of the wheels when the load is being handled.

A tackle block 7 is arranged between the bars 1 near the top thereof and just below the block 2, the said block being arranged upon a bolt 8, as shown.

A flexible member 9, as, for instance, a rope or cable, is arranged on the tackle block and with one end of this rope or cable of the Copies of this patent may be obtained for is connected a loop 10, likewise of flexible material, in the present instance, a chain, and this loop is of a size to engage about the end of the body or rack, as shown in Fig. 1.

In use, to lift a rack or body upon the running gear, for instance, the apparatus is placed crosswise of the rack or body and in front of the same, the rack being upon the ground. The apparatus is arranged with the flanges of the wheels and the loop of the tackle toward the front end of the rack. The apparatus must not be set square across the end of the rack, but on an angle of about ten degrees. For instance, if the rack is to be swung to the'right the right hand wheel should be set close to the rack, with the left about twelve or fourteen inches from the rack. This is because the rack swings on the arc of a circle and would naturally carry away from the apparatus or truck if placed squarely across.

When the rack is lifted the top of the standard will swing over, as shown in Fig. 1, but the flanges will prevent slipping. The truck is then pushed toward the running gear of the wagon until the front end of the rack is carried over the bolster, the front wheel of the truck passing under the wagon tongue, which is raised and carried aside. The rack is now lowered, and the operation is repeated at the opposite end. During the lifting of the rack the rope may be snubbed around the lower ends of the bars 1, which extend below the bars 3, as indicated at 11, for this purpose.

A device of the character specified. comprising a standard consisting of spaced parallel bars, cross bars connecting the first named bars at their lower ends, inclined braces arranged between the ends of the cross bars and the first named bars, wheels.

journaled at the ends of the cross bars, each of the said wheels being flanged, and block and tackle supported by the upper ends of the said first named bars between the same, the first named bars being extended below the cross bars for the purpose specified.
