Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1918.
Application filed. November 5, 1917. Serial No. 200,269.
To all whom, it may 012mm Be it known that 1, Vin) B. GRnCo, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of llaterloo, Blackhawk county, lowa, have invented certain new and useful lmpi-ovements in Heels for Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
lily invention relates to improvements in heels for boots and shoes, and the object of my improvement is to supply a sectional heel whose parts or lifts are of different materials of mmtrastiug qualities to subserve different uses, having suitable means for fastening the parts together separably.
This object I have accomplished by the means which are hereinafter described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the acconu'ianying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical medial longitudinal section of a heel for a ladys shoe, as constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2 is an under plan view of the hollow frame body therefor; Fig. 3 a view,.in erspective, of the lifts and of the washer said heel as disassembled and positioned near each other in their usual order for assembling, and Fig. 1 is a vertical medial longitudinal section of a mans shoe heel constructed according to the same principles of invention. Fig. 5 1s a vertical longitudinal section of a modified forin' of heel.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding partsthroughout the several views.
My improved shoe heel. is composed of a bottom elastic or resilient lift 6, a superposed relatively rigid hollow lift 1 providing the main body of the heel, a washer 14 made of an elastic or resilient substance, and a hollow frame body 10, all assembled and fastened together and to the heel part of a shoe sole as shown.
The lift 6 may be formed of soft rubber,
felt, leather or other suitable elastic, resili-.
7 raised integrally from the upper surface of the lower lift 6. This connection prevents relative movement of the lifts in a horizontal plane. I
A hollow rigid metal frame body 10 is made to fit within the hollow of the lift 1 and has around its upper edge an outwardly extending flange 12 supplied with numerous orifices 1.3 to receive fastening nails 16 to secure the flange to the sole 17 of a .shoe. A washer 14, preferably of rubber or some elastic substance is fitted about the frame 10 between its flange 12 and the upper edge of the lift 1, and increases in thickness toward the rear. This washer is orificed in line with the orifices 13 in said flange to also receive the nails 16.
The superposed parts of the frame 10, the rigid lift 1 and the elastic lift 6 have registering orifices 11, 3 and 8 to receive a screw 5, the flat head of the latter being positioned in a hollow 9 in the under surface of the lift 6, and the threaded end of the screw mcshing with an interior thread formed in a downwardly directed part 4 of the frame body 10.
The exterior angles of the lift 1, when formed of a vitreous material-are rounded to prevent breakage.
Thehollow lift 1 and the hollow frame 10 make the heel light as well as strong, and the elastic washer 14 also the elastic lift 6 give the heel resiliency, cushioning it to prevent shocks or breakage. The heel having its lift 1 formed of a single piece of material, preserves a smooth surface, Without possibility of dividing crevices as often occurs with several layers of leather, and a vitreous substance in said lift retains a gloss permanently.
It is to be understood that the parts and arrangen'ient of said heel, its form and dimensions, and means of fastening together and to the shoe sole may be varied Without departing from the. principles of my invention.
in Fig. 5 a leather lift 6 is used, with a.
metal washer 18 in the socket 2 havingpif'ongs 19 clenched, therein to secure it to the i t 1.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. In a shoe heel, lifts composed respecftively of frangible and of elastic materials,
sm-face the frangible lift being: hollow, ;a*" hollow frame body moimted within thef'liollow of" the latter lift and closely fitting'ite -inner and means for securing seid liftsto. the sole of a shoe. a e
2. In a shoe heel, superposed liftsfsec'ured together, the lift immediately above the lowest lift being hollow, a hollow frangible ,wurdly directed flange between frame fitted within and fitted closely to the walls of said hollow and having altolitthe e er lift and the shoe-sole and secured to. the lid;-
oppe'r hollow lift.
ter, and an elastic washer engaged between said flange and the adjacent edge of said a shoe heel, a hollow frangible lift, a hollowd'igid frame fitted in close contact with the inner wall of the hollow of said lift, means for securing said liftand said frame together, and other means for securing said 220 lift to tli'e 'sole. of a shoe. Signed at 'i lflaterloo, Iowa, this 24th day of Qotober 1917.
