To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Isroon FLEISOHMANN, a citizen of Hungary, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Life-Boats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a life boat provided with novel and eflicient means for preventing capsizing in rough water.

To both sides of the life boat 1, are hingedg'ly secured a number of floats 2 directly beneath the gunnels 3, the floats being so spaced as to form clearances at the oar locks 4. Each float is formed of a hollow sheet metal body, the cross sectional shape of which is that of a rectangular triangle having two unequal sides, the hinge connection between boat and float being formed at the angle between the hypotenuse with the longer side. In this way, the hypotenuse, or slanting side, will face the side of the boat, so that when the float is folded (Fig. 2), the upper side of the float will drop at a sharp angle, while when the float assumes its horizontal position,it will project sidewise from the boat to a maximum extent, to constitute a sustaining member of pronounced width. In this latter position, moreover, the water will engage the outmost depending tip only, of the float, while its innermost portion will remain uninfluenced by the water (Fig. 3) whereby its stabilizing eflect is greatly augmented.

In order to removably secure the float to the body of the boat, it is encompassed near each end by a sheet metal strap 6 comiected by a hinge 7, to a lug 8, carrying a screw 9. This screw is passed through an aperture formed in the side of the boat below gunnel 3, and upon its inner end is mounted a washer l0 and a nut 11. By unscrewing the nuts, the straps may be uncoupled from the boat, so that in this way, the floats may be removed for the purposes of storage or repair.
In order to check the upward movement of the float, it is connected at its lower outer end to th side of the boat by a chain 12, that is of such a length as to be taut when the float rests upon the surface of the water.
It will be seen that by the construction de scribed, the floats are free to fold closely against the sides of the boat when the latter is docked, so as to occupy a minimum amount of lateral space, while when the boat is launched, the floats will effectively prevent the same from capsizing.
I claim:
1. A life boat provided with a plurality of hinged hollow floats, of right angled cross section. i
2. A life boat provided with a plurality of hollow floats, the cross section of which is a right angle triangle with unequal sides, and means for hinging said floats at their junction between the hypotenuse and the longer side, to the body of the boat.
3. A life boat provided with a plurality of hollow floats, straps encompassing said floats, bolts hinged to the straps, said bolts passing through the body of said boat, and nuts carried by said bolts.
4:. A life boat provided with a plurality of hollow floats oftriangular cross section, straps encompassing said floats, means for removably coupling said straps to the body of the boat, and chains connecting the outer ends of the floats to the boat.
