PROPELLING MEANS FOR BOATS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ADJUTOR LoUIs PHILIPPE TALBOT, residing at 668 Fullum street, in the city of Montreal, n the Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Propelling Means for Boats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptlon of the same.

The invention relates to propelling means r'or boats, and has for its object the devis ng of specially constructed cars or propelling means whereby the operator will face the bow of the boat.

The invention will be better described with the aid of the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rowboat provided with the improved propelling means.

Fig. 2 is a cross section on line AA of Fig. 1, the ears having been removed.

Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of the oar supports.

Fig. 4 is a front elevation of one paddle or oar.

Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.

In the drawings 1 is a boat, and 2 are brackets preferably secured to the outer sides of the boat, as illustrated in the drawings. The said brackets 2 are provided with upwardly projecting flanges 3 and at supporting the rollers 5 and 6 Which are arranged one above the other and grooved in order to form a channel 7 therebetween, in which is inserted the rod 8.

The rod 8 is preferably curved at 9 and bent so as to form a loop 10 to receive the paddle 11, and 12 is a handle provided at the outer end of said rod 8. The paddle 11 will be firmly held in the loop 10 by means of the wedge 13 inserted between said loop and the end projecting therein. Said paddle is here shown as being secured at right angles relative to the rod 8, but it may be secured at any other suitable angle, that proves more convenient.

One important feature of the invention lies in the fact that it is not necessary to be an expert oarsman to propel a boat, and the paddles, being close to the sides of the boat, may prevent the boat from upsetting in rough weather.

Without departing from the spirit of the invention, one roller only could be used in place of two, or both rollers could be eliminated as long as the surfaces between which the rod 8 will slide are smooth. These rollers will undoubtedly make the operation easier by eliminating friction, but the device would operate with as much efliciency without any rollers.

What I claim as my invention is 1. A means for propelling boats, comprising a bracket suitably secured to said boat and adapted to receive a rod suitably mounted within said bracket and projecting therethrough, the outer end of said rod being curved in order to prevent the same from being pulled out from said bracket; a paddle secured at a right angle in relation to said rod and rigidly secured thereto; and a handle at the end of said rod, substantially as described.

2. A means for propelling boats, comprising a bracket suitably secured to said boat and adapted to receive a rod suitably mounted within said bracket and projecting therethrough, its outer end being curved, the said rod being bent at its other end so as to form a loop and a handle; and a paddle rigidly secured within said loop, substantially as described.

3. A means for propelling boats, comprising a bracket secured to said boat, provided with two upwardly projecting lugs; rollers mounted between said lugs, one above the other; a rod slidably mounted within said rollers, bent at one end, the other end of said rod being bent so as to form a loop and a handle; and a paddle rigidly secured within said loop, substantially as described.
