To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that. I, AXEL R. GUsTAFsoN, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State t Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lroning-lvlachines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in ironing machines and one of its objects is to provide a machine of the hand or power type which is simple in construction and efficient in operation. A further object is to provide an ironing machine that will thoroughly dry such garments as may be damp, during the ironing operation, without danger of scorching or burning the garments. A further ob'ect is to provide a machine of this type that can be used with the minimum of danger of bodily injury to the operator.
A further-objectis to provide an ironing machine havingra plurality of heated rolls arranged in the arc of a circle upon a stationary frame, said rolls being heated independently of each other so that any desired temperatpre may prevail in any given roll; said heatedroll's, further, being adapted for simultaneous engagement with and dis engagement from a padded roll journaled in n'iovable bearings, said padded roll and bearings being under manual control of the operator.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combina tion and arrangement of parts. to be hereinafter fully described pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accon'ipanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which-- Figure 1 is a view of my improved ironing machine in end elevation. gas being used as a heating element.

Like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views. y ironing machine comprises the frame 1 provided with feet 2 and. formed with the angular extension or neck-frame 3, the sides of the neck-frame being connected by the stay rod 3. The frame is formed with the end ledges 4, one of which carries the motor 5, and with the transverse stay rods 6 to which the receiving table 7 is suitably bolted. In the neck frame the heated roll shafts 8, 9, 10 are journaled, said ing equidistant from each other and an muged in the arc of a circle. Gas for heatmg purposes is admitted to the rolls i1, 12, 13 of shafts 8, 9, 10 through the medium said shafts which are of hollow formation and in communication with the branch pipes 14-, 15, 16 which are fed through the nipple 17 adapted toreceive one end of a flexible gas transmission hose (not shown). Each branch pipe l i, 15, 16 is provided with a valve 18 whereby the amount of gas fed to any one roll is controlled and the temperature of the several rolls always regulated. The roll shafts 8, 9, 10 are provided upon one end with the gearsl9, 20, 21 which are never in mesh distance between the said rollshafts. The gear 21, however, is always in mesh. with a relatively small gear 22 fast upon the stub shaft 23 that is journalcd in one side of the frame 1 and that carries the large drive wheel 24 that is connected by a belt (not shown) to the motor pulley 25.
A padded roll 26 is fast upon a shaft 2? journalcd in blocks 28 slidably arranged, in the slotted portions of the movable bearings 29 upon the tension springs 30 seated upon plates 31 also arranged in the slotted portions oi? said bearings and adjusting screws 32 carried. by said-bearings engage with said plates 31 to adjust the same relatively to said blocks 28 when desired. Brace arms 33 made fastto the bearings 29 support a feed table 34 disposed in advance of the padded roll 26.
Guide arms 35 connected by pivots 36 to theendsof the frame 1 are also pivotally connected to the bearings 29 to partially support and guide the same and links 37 also pivotally connected to said bearings 29 depend from said bearings and are formed with the obliquely enlarged portions 38 wherein the obliquely disposed elongated slots 39 are 'i-th each other due to the formed: said slots 39 receiving the relatively small lugs which are integral with the frame 1, said lugs being disposed at substantially a 45 angle with the frame and serving as guides for the said links 37.
Guide plates 41 secured by bolts or screws 42 to the lugs serve to retain the said links in operative relation. The links 37 at their lower ends are connected by 'pitmen 43 with the racks 11 which are fast upon bonnet-ting rod 45 fulcrumed upon a post 416 and provided with a pedal 17. Dogs 48 pivotally connected to the frame l are normally in engagement with the toothed per-- tions of the racks 11 to retain them in horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 1, said dogs being also engaged by pitmen 49 connected to links 50 adjustabl v secured to a transverse rod 51 journaled in the sides of the frame 1, said rod 51 being provided with an operating handle T he shaft 27 of the padded roll 26 1s pro- .vided at one end with the large gear 53 which. in one position of said roll with re spect to the heated rolls, is adapted for en-. gagcnir-nt with the aforesaid gears 19, 20, 21, said shaft 27 and padded roll 26, at that time, receiving power from the gear 21 and transmitting the same to the gears 19, 20. "When the dogs 48' are in engagement with the outermost: teeth of the racks 14 the shaft 27' of the padded roll is disengaged from the heated rolls and, further, it is substantially at. the center of a circle in an arc of whosecircumfm'ence the shafts 8, 9, .10 of the heated rolls lie. The longitudinal center line of the slot 39 of link 37 lies parallel with the radius of the said circle that would connect shafts 27 and 9, the movement of the padded roll from engaged to disengaged relation with the heated rolls and vice versa is little. and so it follows that said heated rolls being arranged close together, they rolls 11 and 12 .and ironed and finished off I by the roll 13. The decreasing heat encountered by the garment as it passes along will greatly lessen the tendency to scorch or -.burn the same although ironing it thoroughly. in Fig. 1 the machine is shown Jinoperative because the padded roll and heated rolls are disengaged. In an ironin machine,.a frame, heated rolls supported thereby, a padded roll adjustably supported by said frame, and means op'eratively engaging said padded roll for causing the same to engage said heated rolls simultaneously and to become disengagedv from said heated rolls, said means including the slotted portions thereof being connected to said frame whereby said padded roll is guided.
i' In an ironing machine, a frame, heated rolls'supported thereby, a padded roll adjustably. supported by said frame, and manually operable means engaging said padded roll for causing the same to engage said heated rolls simultaneously, said means including obliquely slotted links and connections between the slotted portions of said links and said frame whereby said padded roll is guided.
3. In an ironing machine, a main frame, a
neck-frame carried thereby, rotary heated rolls journaled in said neck-frame, roll adj ustably carried by said main frame, and means connecting said padded roll and main frame for moving said padded roll into imultaneous engagement with. said heated rolls, said means including obliquely slotted links having connections between the slotted portions of said links and main frame whereby said padded roll is guided relatively to said neck frame. 4. In an ironing machine, a main frame, a neck-frame carried thereby, heated rolls arranged in the arc of a circle and journaled in said neck-frame, a padded roll adjustably carried by said main frame, and means for effecting simultaneous engagement of said padded roll with said heated rolls, said means including obliquely slotted links.

In an ironing machine, a frame, heated rolls carried by said frame and arranged in the arc of a circle, a padded roll, means associated'w ith said frame for adjustably supporting said padded roll, said means including obliquely slotted links in the slots of which frame lugs are disposed, said links serving to guide said roll-supporting means, and means for actuating the aforesaid means whereby said padded roll may be moved into engagement with said heated rolls simultaneously.
7. In an ironing machine, a main frame, a neck-frame carried thereby, heated rolls *arried by said neck-frame and arranged in the are of a circle, a padded roll, means associated with said main frame for adjustably supporting said padded roll, said means including obliquely slotted links in the slots of which frame lugs are disposed, said links serving to guide said roll-supporting means, the longitudinal center lines of said oblique slots being disposed parallel with a radius connecting the shaft of said padded roll with the shaft of one of said heated rolls, and means for actuating said padded rollsupporting means whereby said padded roll may be moved into simultaneous engage ment with said heated rolls.

In an-ironing machine, a frame, heated rolls carried by said frame and arranged in the areof a circle, a padded roll, means associated with said frame for adjustably supporting said padded roll, said means including obliquely slotted links in the slots of which frame lugs are disposed, said links serving to guide said roll-supporting means, cover plates bolted to said frame lugs and engaging said slotted links, actuating means for said padded roll whereby the same may be moved into simultaneous engagement With said heated rolls, and means for re leasably locking said padded roll in adjusted position with relation to said heated rolls.
9. In an ironing machine, a frame, heated rolls carried by said frame and arranged in the are of a circle, a padded roll, guide arms pivotally connecting said padded roll and said frame, obliquely slotted links connected to said padded roll, lugs formed on said frame and disposed in the slotted portions of said links, cover plates for said slotted links bolted to said lugs, fulcrumed racks, connections between said fulcrumcd racks and slotted links, and means for moving said racks upon their fulcrums.
