To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TRUMAN H, BENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elliott, in the county of Ford and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and uSeful Improvements in Attachments for Automobiles, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved attachment for automobiles, and has for its prin'iary object to provide means which may be easily and quickly attached to the wheel of an automobile, whereby the machine. may be pulled by its own power from sand or mud in which it has become stalled.
It is another and more particular object of my invention to provide a device for the above purpose consisting of a drum having an end section provided with means for attachment to the wheeha body section insertible' over the wheel hub, and means for detachably and rigidly connecting the body section of the drum to said end section.
It is also an additional object of my invention to provide a device for the above purpose which may be applied to the ordinary motor vehicle wheel without necessitating any structural changes therein, and which is exceedingly strong and durable and capable of manufacture at relatively small cost.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved combination, construction and relative arrange mont of the several parts as will be herein after more fully described, subsequently claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a motor vehicle wheel showing my improved attachment. applied thereto:

Referring in detail to the drawing, l-l designates the hub and S the spokes of a motor vehicle wheel. The attachment which constitutes the subject matter of the present in vcntion consists of a drum having an end section designated generally byth numeral 5. said drum section being formed with an outwardly projecting annular flange 6, and

The other end of the cable is tied or other wise secured to a stake 20, which is driven into the ground at a suitable point in advance of the stalled machine.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the purpose and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood. When the attachment is applied, as seen in Fig. 1, and the end of the cable securely staked to the ground. the motor of the vehicle is started in operation. The driving wheels will thus be rotated. and the cable 19 will be wound upon the drum body 13 attached to one of said wheels. As the cable is thus wound upon the drum. the machine is caused to advance and is thus extricated from the sand or mud in which it has become stalled. The attachordinary automobile.

I claim An attachn'ient for motor vehicle wheels comprising a drum having a short end section and a relatively long body section, each of said sections having an outwardly projecting flange formed on one end, means for connecting said drum sections to each other with their walls in longitudinal alinement and the connected drum sections being adapted to he fitted over the hub of the vehicle wheel, a plurality of radially extending, angularly off-set arms projecting from the flange on the end section of the drum to space said flange from the spokes of the vehicle wheel, and means for clamping said arms at their extremities to the wheel spokes.
