original application filed January 5, 1-915, Serial No. 556. Divided and this application filed January-5, 1917; Seria1No.140,820. v v 1 To all whom it may concern. :Be. it .known that I, BU RxHA M C. STICK- XEY. a citizen of the United States, residing in Elizabeth, in the county of Union and Jersey, have invented certainnew and useful. Improvements in Typeriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
,This invention relates to an improvement in typewriting' mechanism and more espe-' cially to means for enabling atypewriter carriage, as it travels to determine difierent zones or maj r columns, and change the character of printin so that-digital items of different import. in tare. several columns may 'nted. This case is a divibe distinctly pr 'sion of my application No. 556, filed J anuary In writing columns import, as, for vexample, debit and credit items, it is often desirable that the worksheet when finished be self-explanatory; that is, that the debit and creditlitems be printed differently, so that one set of items will stand out from the other. In the present embodiment of the invention, this is digit type-bars with two sets of digits, distinctive one from the other. hen it is desired to print in a column one set of items, such as credit items, the lower-case digit types are used. hen it is desired to print anotherclass of items, such .as debit items, the upper-case digit The shift from one to the I ther is controlled automatically from the arriage itself by the tabulating stops or controlling the character 0 similar stops or tappets operating the usual case-shift" frame.
The character of print: -controlling stops is made so that they other-iii In one position they are eifective as f the printing and-iii the other position they are ineffective. They may also be adjustable along the car-' ria'ge so as'to determine'the particular location of the zones or major columns in which they become effective.
Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear. 7
In the accompanying drawings,
, Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section taken from front to rear with parts omitted to simplify the showing. I
Fig, 2 is a skeleton perspective view of the modified of figures of diflerent press. key-levers 8,
number will be in evidence,
'as in Fig. at,
"from' the lower-case case-shift mechanism upper-case position.
Fig. 3 is a'deta'il type-heads showing that each of the digit type-bars has two distinctive sets of characters of the same value, in this case, the distinction is merely one of=size,
ing largenumbers or capitals.

which will be clearly distinct from the numbers afi'orded when writing with the other set Thedisa characteristically written tinction may be one of magmtudefas in Fig-w 3, where the lower-case characters are'smal and the upper-case charactersare'largea or the distlnction may be one of conformation,

The platen 7 is which travels on ways of an escapementmechanism include a rack 13, pivotally' carriage and engaging a PHHOII trolled by turn is controlled by dogs 15*. The dogs 15' mounted on a carriage 10, 11 under the control are oscillated into.
alternate engagementwith the escapern'entwheel 15, by a universal frame 16 operated by'heels 17 on all of the type-bars 5.
In order to enable the'change in printing types 8 an escapement wheel 15, which in fixed and movable x 12', which may mounted on the to the 'uppercase types 9, the-platen 7 is mounted 111B.

to the lower-case types 8., on other occasions to the upper-case types 9.
To effect.- the' movement of the'platen 7 and its frame 18, the latteris supported by a roller'19, which travels supported by a shift frame 21' which is mounted to swing about a shaft 22. The shift frame 21 may be rocked manually to effect a change in case or character of printing, by one or more shift keys 23. In the presentinstance, two are shown, one for a temporary shift and the other for .a semipernianent shift. These shift keys 23 are each provided with an upwardly-extending arm 24, which engages in back of the shift to elevate the platen 7 and its frame 18. 7
The carriage 10, which, as stated above,
obtains a step-by-step advancing movement at the striking of any of the keys 1 or 2, under the control of the escapement mechanism 12, also may. have a major'or jump 4 movement t6 change quickly from one zone or major column to another. For this purpose there is provided a tabulating mechanism, which may include decimal tabulating keys 25, which when depressed, rock keylevers 726 'to thrust up plunger stops 27 into the path of carriage stops 28, which may be adj ustably'mounted at letter-space intervals along a rack '29 carried by the carriage 10.
To effect the release of the carriage at the operation of the tabulating mechanism, a lever 30 universal to all of the plunger stops 27, may be rocked at the operation of any one thereof, to draw down 'on a link 31, so as to rock a lever 32, which bears at its forward end, a roller 33 underlying the rack 13, so as to lift the latter out of mesh with the controlling escapement pinion 14.
. It is often desirable to make the typewriting distinctive for writing digital items of different import, as for example, credit and debit items. For this purpose there are provided two different sets of type on the Lower-case type being used for one set of'items, such as credit items, and the upper-case type for another set of items, such as debit items. form of the types 8 and 9, may be used as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. In order that the carriage itself may control the change in the character of cording to a predetermined plan character-- istic of the work being done, one of the stops 28 or any other tappet, which, may or may notcog'iperate with plunger stops :27 is formed and positioned to come into play, on

claim the present instance,

the special tappet or stop 28 controlling' upper-case writing, is"
extension will be located in its lower position j as indicated at 28 Fig.3, in which position itwill determine characters. To do this, long foot is a point as. will into play when'the work-sheet on the carriage brings to the printing point the columns at which it, is'desi'red to write debit or upper-case items. At such time the stop 28? will .come into engagement with a cam edge 35 on a zone-controlling bar 36 having an extent or fefiective length corresponding to the number of letter-spaces or digital columns desired in. the debit column or zone. so engaged will be de-.
The bar 36 when pressed downwardly and held depressed ,during the writing of the digits for the zone or major column. The depression of this bar forces down alink 37 connected thereto, which in turn swings downwardly a rock arm 38fixed on the shaft 22 which forms a pivotal mounting for the case-shift frame 21. This then will cause the case-shift frame 21 to rock forcing upwardl the shift rail 20, so that the platen frame 8 to its upper-case position when the uppercase digit type 9 will be effective to print.
It will thus be seen that a serieso columns-or zones representing selectively ,debitand credit items may be distinctively printed 75 the writing ofup'per-case:
