COMBINED LOCK AND HASP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1918.
Application filed July 16, 1918. Serial No. 245,149.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLEY H. lanolin, a citizen of the United States,res1d1ng at vNorwood, in the county of Hamilton and vention to provide a combined hasp and lock whereby the hasp can be effectually maintained in engagement with its keeper or staple when in closed position, thus preventing the opening of a door or gate provided therewith.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The improvements in the details and arrangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the specific description hereinafter contained and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding thereof.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved device-applied to a gate, a
Fig. 2 is a horizontal longitudinal section therethrough, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary elevation of the same in open position.
Having more particular reference to the drawings, in connection with which like reference characters will designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
9 represents the gate having the improved device attached thereto and j the post arranged adjacent the free end thereof.
The improved combined hasp and lock includes an apertured plate 1 receiving screws 2 or similar fastening devices there through which in turn are passed into engagement with a portion of the gate 9, said plate having a hasp 3 hinged to one end thereof as at 4, which hasp, as will be noted is provided with an enlarged apertured end 5 carrying a finger piece 6 and is adapted to be received over a keeper 7 secured to a portion of the post 7' as shown in the Fig. 1. The remaining end of the plate 1 is hinged to an arm 8 carrying a lock casing 9 on its outer end in which the bolt 10 is slidably arranged and is adapted to be actuated by means of a key inserted in the opening 11 formed in said casing.
In using my improved combined hasp and lock, the hasp 3 is swung outwardly so that the enlarged apertured end 5 thereof engages over the keeper 7 secured to the adjacent portion of the post 7', whereupon the arm 8 is swung thereovcr and a key is inserted in the hole 11 and turned to cause the sliding of the bolt 10 into the pocket formed by said keeper 7, thus locking the arm 8 in position over the hasp 3 and, obviously, preventing disengagement of the enlarged aperturecl end of the hasp from the keeper 7. To re lease the hasp, it is only necessary to turn the key in a reverse direction to retract the bolt 10. When so disengaged from the keeper 7, the arm 8 can be then swung backwardly from over the hasp 3 and the finger piece 6 of said hasp grasped to facilitate the moving of the same to its open position. At this time, the gate 9' can be moved freely.
From the foregoing, itwill be readily un derstood by persons skilled in the art that I have provided an exceedingly desirable and simple form of combined hasp and lock, furthermore, a device which will eliminate the use of the ordinary key or pin which is passed through the staple subsequent to the engagement of the hasp thereover; such an arrangement, obviously being impractical due to the possibility of persons removing the same therefrom and opening a gate provided therewith.
Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of my' claim I consider within the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
A device of the character described, including in combination with a keeper, a plate, a hasp hinged to said plate engageable over said keeper, an arm hinged to the plate receivable over said hasp, and a lock carried by said arm engageable with the keeper.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature hereto.
CHARLEY H. ZANGER.
