. ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
v GEORGE HENRY RUSSELL, 0F FLORENCE, ALABAMA.
RAIL AND TIE Tones.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE H. RUssnLL,-a citizen of. the United States, residing at Florence, in the county of Lauderdale and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Rail and Tie Tongs, of which the.
'followin is a specification.
, The su ject of this invention is a rail and .tie tongs, and the objects of the invention are, first, to provide a unitary structure adapted for lifting both rails and ties, second, to provide a simple, durable and efli- "cient rail and tie tongs.
With the foregoing and otherobjects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being. understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the tongs as applied in lifting a rail.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing'the tongs applied to lifting a tie;
Fig. 3 is a top planview of the tongs as viewed in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings by numerals of reference .The tongs consist of two complemental bars 1-1 bent or looped at one end to form "the handles 2. At their other ends these bars '1 merge into the curved or hooked gripping gaws 3 which are adapted to take under the all of a rail 4, asseen most clearly in Fig. 1. At a median point on the curved or jaw ortions 3, the bars are pivotally connected v a pin or rivet 5.
Pivoted to each bar 1, near the pivotal Specification of Letters Patent.
The toes 7 as will be seen, are opposed so as to form gripping elements. I A connecting link 8 is bifurcated at each end to straddle each leg 6 to a median point of which it is pivoted by a rivet 9.
When the tongs are in the position shown in Fig. 1 an upward movement of the handles 2 will cause the jaws 3 to be brought together into gripping position.
With the tongs reversed, as seen in Fig. 2, upward movement of the handles 2 will force the toes 7 toward each other and cause them to grip the tie 10 while a contrary motion of the handles will draw the toes apart and release the tie.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and sought by Letters Patent, is
Patented Dec. 3, 1918. Application filed October 17, 1918. Serial No. 258,501.
1. A rail and tie tongs, comprising piv- I into a curved gripping jaw, a leg pivoted to each bar and extending in a direction opposite to the gripping jaw, and a link pivotally connecting the legs.
2. A rail and tie tongs, comprising pivotally attached bars each bent at one end to form a handle and merging at the other end into a curved gripping jaw, a leo' ivoted to each bar and extending in a direction opposite. to the'gripping jaw, and a link pivoted to a median point of each leg.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in'the presence of two witnesses.
