ATTACHMENT FOR METER BOXES. I
APPLICATION FILED JULY 29,1918.

RUDOLPH noHLnEn, oFsEA'r'rLn, WASHINGTON.
Armor- Maureen mrnasoxns.
inseam.
To all whom it may concern:
a citizen" of the United States, and resident of Seattle, in the county of King and State} of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Miter-Boxes, 'off which the following is a clear and exact specification.
attachments for .miter boxes and the object of this improvement is to provide an attach-.
ment that mayreadily be secured to the vertical side of a miter box and: quickly and easily adjusted into variousf anglesof divergence from said vertlcal slde to support a piece of timber in an inclinedposition with respect to both the ertical side and s the horizontalbottom ofthe "miter box so that the piece of timber may bemiter cut on an angle with respect to all of its side surfaces. s
When a piece oftimber of rectangular shape is laid fiat on the horizontal bottom side of a miter box and cut at an angle by turning the miter saw at other than right angles to the yerticalsideof the box, the
plane of the cut surface of the timber will be at right angles to the plane of the top and a bottom surfacesof the timber, and at other than right angles to the two side surfaces of the piece of timber. If the piece of timher is turnedso that none ofits sidesurfaces are parallel with'the plane of thebottom of the miter box and then cut with the saw at other than right angleslto theback of. the box, the plane of the m ter cut end; will not be at right angles;to any of the side surfaces ofthe piece of timber.
The attachmentfdisclosed in this application is adapted tosupport a piece of timber in an inclined position so that its side surfaces are not parallel with the bottom side of the miter box respectively. n
The invention consists in the novel con struction of an attachment of the class de scribed and theadaptation and combination of the attachment with a miter box as will be more clearly hereinafter describedand claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of a miter b ox showing twoattachments constructed 1n accordance wlth this. lnventlonv placed thereon. Fig. 2 is an enlargedyiew in cross section substantially on broken line Specification of Letters Patent. Pg figntgd Application filed m 29, 1918. Serial No. 247,135. r

miter saw being broken away, andFig. 3 is withthis invention.
Referring to the drawings, throughout whichlike reference numerals indicate like t parts, numeral 5 designatesa miter box of The lnvention relates to improvements 111 well known form of construction that is provided with a horizontal table or bottom 6.
be sawed. s t a i s s 'The side of the box7 asherein shown is formed of corrugated metal but itis obyious thatthese "attachments will work equally well on a box having a straight, non-corrue gated vertical side.
The box 5 is providedwith a transverse bar 10 pivoted as at 11 andadapted to sup port two, upright saw guides 12 and 13 wherein is mounted a reciprocable saw 1e that may beturned at other thanright an: gles to the side 7 of'the box, all of the above a parts being ofwell known standard con struction. s j 1 a: This invention contemplates the provision of a pair of attachments that are adapted] to lbesecured tothe side 7 of the miter box on each side of thesaw andadjusted into various angular positions with respect to theside 'Zto form a support and guide for be sawed. t s
The attachments each comprise a flat plate piece oftimber Sthat is to i 15 that isprovided near each end with hook shaped members 16 that are adapted to hook t over the top edge of the side 7 as more thereto by setscrews l7.
clearly shown in Fig. 2, andtobe secured The rear sideof theplate 15lispreferably recessed for the reception of the down wardly projecting ends 18 of the hook memhere 16 whichfextend entirelyj across the plates 15 and are secured theretoby screws The plates 15 are supportedby therhook *mexnbersldin such a positionthatthey will just clear the bottom 6 of the .rniter I. box,and such plates 15 are providednear their bottom edges with holes 21 wherein are disposed screws 22 that are threaded through the depending portions 18 of the hook members and are adapted to be screwed against the vertical side 7 of the miter box to support the lower edgeof the plate 15 at a desired distance from the side 7 One end of each of the plates 15 is preferably beveled as at 23 so that it will clear the saw 14 when the saw is turned at an angle to the side 7.
The beveled ends 23 of the plates 15 are also preferably cut at an angle that is inclined away from the saw 14 from top to bottom of the plates so that when the bottom edges of the plates 15 are moved out wardly by turning the screws 22 the lower portions of the beveled ends 23 will not interfere with the saw 14. The plates may be made in pairs for the right and left side of the miter box respectively, or such plates may be provided with bevels 23 on both ends in an obvious manner so they will be interchangeable with respect to the two sides of the box.
The front surface of the plates 15 are preferably roughened or serrated so that a piece of timber will have less tendency to slide thereover and the bottom table 6 of the miter box is usually roughened in a similar manner.
This device is especially useful in cabinet making and pattern shops, and in the interior finishing of boats where pieces of timbers are often placed together in various inclined positions.
When the screws 22 are not in engagement with the side 7 but are withdrawn to permit the depending end 18 of the hook members 16 to hang in a vertical position then the plates 15-will be parallel with the side wall 7 and themiter box may be used in the ordinary manner without removing these attachments therefrom.
In operation, if it is desired to cut the piece of rectangular timber 8 on an angle with respect to two of its sides it may be placed on the bottom of the box 6 with one side in contact with the vertical plates 15 and cut in a plane at right angles to the top and bottom surfaces of the timber 8 and at other than right angles to the side surfaces of such timber.
If, however, it is desired to cut the timber S at an angle other than a right angle to all ofitssides the screws 22 may be screwed inwardlyagainst the plate 7 far enoughto give the plates 15 the desired angle and the piece of timber 8 may be held securely against the plates 15 and sawe'd.
It is obvious that changes in theform of of the attachments herein described may be resorted to within the scope of the claims.
What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a miter box having a horizontal bottom and side walls at right angles thereto, of plates connected at their top edges with the top edges of said side walls and means for moving the bottom edges of said plates away from said side walls. 2. The combination with a miter box having a horizontal bottom and a side wall at right angles thereto, of a plate having hooks on the top edge thereof that hook over the top edge of said side wall, and screws in the bottom edges of said plates that are adapted to engage the lower portion of said side wall to support said plate at an angle with respect to said side wall.
3. The combination with a miter box hav ing a horizontal bottom and a side wall at right angles thereto, of a plate having hooks on the top edge thereof that hook over the top edge of said side wall, and screws in the bottom edges of said plates that are adapted to engage the lower portion of said side wall to support said plate at an angle with respect to said side wall, said plate being cut at an angle and beveled on one end to clear the saw of said miter box.
4. An attachment of the class described comprising a plate having a beveled inner end that is cut on an incline from top to bottom, a strap secured to the rear side of said plate adjacent each end thereof, rearwardly directed hooks formed on the upper ends of said straps, and screws adapted to screw through said straps, said plates being provided with recesses wherein said screws are disposed.
5. An attachment for miter boxes comprising a plate having an inner end that is cut on an angle from top to bottom thereof and is beveled on said inner end to clear a saw said plate having grooves formed in the rear side thereof, straps disposed in said grooves and secured to said plates, outwardly directed hook portions formed on the top ends of said straps, set screws provided in said hook portions and screws threaded through the lower ends of said straps the said plate being provided with recesses wherein said screws are operatively disposed so that they will not project outwardly from the plane of the front surface of said plate.
Signed at Seattle, Washington, this 6th day ofJuly, 1918.
