To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TI-IAYER B. FARRING- TON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Regulating Devices for L0- comotive Front Ends, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the draft regulating device in locomotive front ends shown and described in my previous Patent No. 1,142,686, of June 8, 1915. In the device of that patent the essential feature is the deflector, or baffie-plate, mounted in the smoke-box between the communications with the smoke-box of two sets of fines, with the upper set containing the superheat-- ing coils and the lower set having unimpeded passages. .This deflector operates to restrict the draft through the lower set of unimpeded flues and thereby increases the draft through the upper setcontaining the superheater coils.
. The object of the present invention is to the deflector so that, such part can be adjusted to regulate proportionally the draft through the two sets of fiues. It also has for its object the provision of means adapted to be actuated by pressure from the steam-chest whereby the hinged part of the deflector will be moved automatically whenpressure is admitted to the steam-chest so as to open the draft communication of the upper set of flues with the smoke-box, the normal position of the deflector being such as to close this communication when the pressure is out oif from the steam-chest.
The'invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings.

The locomotive frontend, apart from the" deflector and the latters actuating mechanism, is of the usual construction and only a brief description ofthe same is necessary. Projecting through the upper part of the flue-sheet 1 is the upper set of fiues 2 containing the superheater coils 3, and through the lower part of the flue-sheet projects the lower set of unimpeded fiues 4, with both sets of fiues communicating with smoke-box in front of the flue-sheet and under the smoke-arch. The superheater coils 3 lead to the header 5, which, communicates through the pipe 6 with the, steam-chest 7. The steam-chest communicates in the usual way with the adjacent cylinder (not shown), and
the latter communicates with exhaust nozzle 9. openin into the smoke-box above the smoke-arc and beneath the lift pipe 8;;
The'smoke-arch is formed of the bathe-plate 10, the table-plate 11, the apron 12 and'the njetl.
The deflector, that forms the essential fea ture, of the present invention, comprises the.
upper fixed part 15, the intermediate member 16 hinged to the outer edge of the fixed part, and the apron 17 adjustable on the outer edge of the intermediate member.
The inner edge of the fixed part '15 is secured across the face of the flue-sheet l'between the communications of the upper and lower sets of fines 2 and 4, respectively. The
intermediate member 16 is hinged to the fixed part 15' by the shaft 18 fast to the inner edge of the intermediate member and journaled in bearings 19 on the outer edge of the fixed part. By turning the shaft 18 the intermediate member can be moved rel-. ative to the fixed part. The apron 17 is ad'- justably mounted on the outer edge ofthe intermediate member by means of the setscrews 20. By the manipulation of the set screws the apron can be adjusted in or out on the intermediate member. The downward movement of the hinged part of the defiector is limited by the stops 21 on the sides of the locomotive shell, and its upward movement is limited by the apron striking the table-plate 11. Smoke arches in locomotive boilers are usually provided with a depending apron at the front edge thereof and formingpart of the smoke-arch. This is to cause the gases passing from the fiues to the cinder-screen, to be directed downwardly and consequently made to travel in an indirect path to the stack. An apron 12 of this character is shown in the drawings, and to secure a further deflection of the gases passing from the lower flues l, especially the tubes lying in a plane below the smoke-arch, and to serve as a baflie to block the flow through said lower tubes, the hinged deflecting member 16 and its adjustable apron 20 are constructed to extend a considerable distance below the smoke-arch including its apron 12, or approximately to the plane of the lowermost of the fines 4. As thus constructed and positioned, the deflector, when its member 16 is in its down position, covers the outlet ends of a majority of the tubes 4, to sufficiently block the flow of the gases therethrough, so as to cause a greater flow through the tubes 2.
Mechanism is provided for turning the shaft 18 to move the hinged part of the deflector. On the shaft is the bell-crank 22, one arm of which carries the adjustable counterweight 23. This counterweight is so adjusted on the arm as normally to turn the shaft 18 to raise the hinged part of the deflector until the apron 1? strikes the tableplate 11. The other arm of the bell-crank 22 has a sliding engagement with the collar 24 on the rod 25 of the piston 26 in the steam cylinder 27. The head of the steam-cylinder communicates through the pipe 29 with the steam-chest 7. "When steam is turned into the steam-chest, through the usual throttle mechanism, the pressure also enters the cylinder 27 and moves the piston 26, and through the rod 25 turns the bell-crank 22 against the action of the counterweight 23. This movement of the bell-crank turns the shaft 18 so as to move the hinged part of the deflector downward against the steps 21. A stop 30 can be adjusted to limit the outward movement of the rod 25 so as to arrest the downward movement of the deflector at any point short of the stops 21. When steam is cut off from the steam-chest 7, the cylinder 27 is also relieved of ressure. When this happens the counterweight acts on the bellcrank to turn the shaft 18 to move the hinged part of the deflector upward to its normal position with the apron 17 in engagement with the table-plate 11.
The particular purpose of the present in-- vention is to provide a combined deflector and damper that will operate automatically as a damper when the engine is not using steam to cut oif the draft through the upper set of fines and thereby prevent the burning out of the superheater units. When the engine is taking steam, the deflector is moved to a position to act as such and operate as the device in my previous patent. That is, as a deflector a free and unobstructed passage, except for the superheater coils, is provided from the upper set of fines into the smoke-box, so that the products of combusnesaese tion will have an unimpeded flow through such passage while the engine is taking steam; and as a damper, when the engine is not taking steam and the action of the deflector is not required, the draft through the upper set of fines is entirely shut off. When the device acts as a deflector, the areas of the passage above and below the deflector can be regulated, by adjusting the movement of the hinged part of the deflector and the apron on its outer edge, to proportion the draft through the two sets of fines to meet the conditions.
Having thus described my invention, what- I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In. a locomotive boiler, a set of upper flues containing superheating coils, a set of lower flues having unimpeded passages, a smoke-box common to both sets of tubes, a cinder screen in said smoke-box, a smokearch positioned between said cinder screen and the lines of the upper set and also the uppermost fines of the lower set, and a deflector secured within said smoke-box and extended downwardly to project into the path of the direct draft between approximately all of the tines of the lower set and the lowermost point of the smolre-box, and thereby impede or restrict the flow of gases through substantially all of said lower fines and cause an increased draft through the fines of the upper set, said deflector being pivoted at its upper edge to enable it to serve as a damper to close the passageway between the flue sheet and said smoke-arch.
2. In a locomotive boiler, a set of upper flues containing superheating coils, a set of lower flues having unimpeded passages, a smoke-box common to both sets of flues, a cinder-screen in said smoke-box, a smokearch positioned between said cinder-screen and the dues of the upper set and also the uppermost fines of the lower set, and a deflector comprising a fixed part secured between the two sets of fines and a hinged member and extended downwardly to project into the path of the direct draft between approximately all of the fines of the lower set and the lowermost point of the smokeboX, and thereby impede or restrict the flow of gases through substantially all of said lower fines and cause an increased draft through the flues of the upper set, said hinged member being adapted to serve as a damper to close the passageway between the flue sheet and the smoke-arch.
8. In a locomotive boiler, a set of upper flues containing superheating coils, a set of lower flues having unimpeded passages, a smoke-box common to both sets of fines, a cinder-screen in said smoke-box, a smoke arch positioned between said cinder-screen and the fines of the upper set and also the uppermost flues of the lower set, a deflector comprising a fixed part secured between the two sets of fines and a hinged member and extended downwardly to project into the path of the direct draft between approximately all of the fines of the lower set and the lowermost point of the smoke-box, and thereby impede or restrict the flow of gases through substantially all of said lower fines and cause an increased draft through the fiues of the upper set, said hinged member being adapted to serve as a damper to close the passageway between the flue sheet and the smoke-arch, and means for normally holding the hinged member raised against the smoke-arch to close the draft through the upper set of fines while the engine is not taking steam and lowering the same when the engine is taking steam.
4. In a locomotive boiler, a set of upper flues containing superheating coils, a set of lower flues having unimpeded passages, a smoke-box common to both sets of fines, a cinder-screen in said smoke-box, a smokearch positioned between said cinder-screen and both sets of said fiues, and a movable deflecting means mounted to operate between a THAYER B. FARRINGTON.
