resaoeo.
' To all whom it may concern 7 formed with an opening the wheel spindle or Be it known that I, W ALTER S. DALEY, a citizen of the United States, residing. at Los Angeles, in the State of California, have invented a new and useful Journal-Box Lubricator, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a journal-box lubricator and particularly pertains to a mechanism for delivering lubricant to the journalor bearings of Wheels such as are employed on rail-way trains, street cars and the like.
It is the object of this invention to provide means formechanicallylubricating journals whereby with; the invention primarily residing in a pan serving as a lubricant reservoir adapted to be inserted in a journal-box and mechanism carried bv bricant to the journal. 7
A, further object is to provide means on the pan for packing the heel of the journal to entering the reservoir through the back wall of the journal-box.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
he invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which: Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal vertical section of a journal-box showing the invention as applied.
Fig. 2
Fig. 3 isa plan view of the lubricant feed roller.
Fig. dis a detail of the journal packing).
More specifically 6 indicates a journalox of ordinary construction having a rear wall journal 9 extends; the with a reduced portion journal being formed upper half in the usual 10 which seats on its bushing 11.
In carrying out my invention I employ a pan 12 shaped to conform to the bottom and side portions of the journal-box which pan serves as a container for the lubricant and is formed of sheet metal not easily fractured so as to hold the lubricant in event the j ournalbOX is cracked. This pan is formed with a rear wall 13 extending transversely acrossthe do rnal-box and having an arcuate cutgpecification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 28, 1917.
V away county of Los Angeles and vent ingress of the use of waste may be dispensed:

portion to extend approximately around the lower half of the journal. Carried on the edge of the arcuate portion of the rear wall is a packing segment 14 formed of felt or similar material here shown as split on its outer edge and positioned astride of the end wall. This packing contactsthe journal and encircles the lower half thereof with its ends abutting against the bushing 11' so as to'efi'ectively close communication between the open rear end of the journal-box and the interior of the pan and-thereby predirt and foreign substances,
Mounted in the pan is a standard 15 on which a rocker arm 16 is pivoted; this arm 17 on its inner end in which a lubricant distributing roller 18 is revolubly mounted. Theouter end of the Y of the journal the roller 18 will revolve and carry the lubricant adhering to its circumferential surface to the journal.
By the use of this invention the employment of cotton Waste or the like may be dis pensedwith and by providing the separate lubricant pan loss of the lubricant will be avoided in event of fracture of the journal- I claim: v
1. The combination of a journal box, a journal therein, a pan insertible in the box beneath the journal having a vertical rear wall formed with an arcuate edge encircling the lower half of the journal, a packing strip on said edge contacting the journal and the inner face of the rear wall of the pan, and mechanism carried by the pan for delivering lubricant from the pan to the journal as the latter revolves.
2. Ajournal lubricator comprisingin combination a journal box, a journal extending therein, a pan adapted to be removably disposed in a journal. box, means on the pan for packing the lower half portion of the joint aha journal the 92111 and W211 snciz cling the lower half of the journal, a packmg segment on 52nd iubncant teed roller carrlecl by Wall contacting a. Weight normally maintaining said roller in contact with the journal.
