To all whom it may concern:
Be it known. that I, ALLEN. E. W RD, a citizen of the United States, residing, in the borough of Montgomery, county of Lycoming, State of Pennsylvania, certain Improvementsin Roller Feeding Devices, of which the following is a, specification.
This. invention relates more particularly to machines for workingwood in many of which feed rollsareused, and it consists in the. application of a spring or springs to one of a pair of feeding rolls in such a manner asto. producea strong pressure on the material being fed. into the machine, and at thesame time'permit the adjustment of such pressure as circumstances may require: and itfurther consists. in the combination and adaptation of means necessary to accomplish theseresults.
' In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a small surface planer to which my invention is applied: Fig. 2 is afrontelevation of a portion of the planer; Fig. 3 is a plan View of the operative parts showing the machine frame in section. Fig. 5 is a plan of fulcrum bar,.and Fig. 4; shows the spring adjusting nut. Fig. 6 is an elevation of one arm 9 and connected parts.
A, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, is the frame of'the planer made in any convenient or necessary form. B is the cutting cylinder and 1, 2, Fig. 1, indicate'the upper feed rolls. C is the bed of the planer upon which the material to be surfaced is fed in. 3, 4 are the lower feed rolls which have hearings in the bed in the usual manner. The boxes of rollers 1, 2 are capable of vertical adjustment to permit the passage of different thicknesses of lumber. Looped rods 5 embrace the boxes 6 of feed roll 1, and pass down inside of the frame A, so as to receive pressure to force the roll down on the material which moves in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1. Fulcrum bars 7 connect the open ends of the looped rods and nuts on the ends of the rods receive the transmitted pressure. The above description relates to well known parts in common use in surface planers of this type.
My invention relates to the application of the required pressure to the feed roll boxes and means for regulating it. D is a rock shaft which extends across the machine and have invented has bearings 8 on the .frame A, This rock shaft is preferably hollow and has formed uponit radial arms -9 at each end and at a cated in a recess in the main frame A so that it cannot revolve; the other end of the spring bears against the bifurcations of arm 10' and thus acts to roll the rock-shaft D, which in turn transmits the tension of the spring to theshort arms 9. Fig. 6 showsthe connection of the arms 9 with the rods 5 and the fulcrum bar 7. The fulcrum17 rests in a notch on the under side of the arm 9 and rods 5- are disposed on each'side of the arm and extend to the roll boxes, and
thus the tension of the spring 12 is transmitted to the feed roll. The tension rodll is threaded at its inner end intothe nut 13 and at its outer end is provided with a hand wheel 1%, the hub ofwhich bears against the frame A, and by means of which the tension of the spring 12 can be increased or diminished according to, the requirements of the work passing over the table C.
It is evident that any arrangement of springs applied to roll the rock shaft D in a direction to bring a pressure on the roll boxes 1 and provided with means to adjust the tension of the springs at will, can be substituted for the specific form shown in the drawings and not depart from the spirit of my invention. Two or more springs may be-used if found necessary to produce the required pressure on the roll boxes 1.
In addition to the tension of the spring or springs 12, it is often necessary when rough and uneven material is fed into the machine to exert a momentary extra pressure on the material until it passes on to be caught by the second feed roll. To accomplish this I attach a foot lever 15 to one of the arms 9, and carry it outside of the frame far enough to permit the operator to place his foot on the pedal 16 and thus quickly transmit additional pressure to the feed roll 1 through the rods 5. The reason for the two methods of producing roll pressure is that for much of the usual class of material to be planed, such as soft wood or narrow pieces, the pressure must be quite light and approximately uniform and this condition is met by the adjustable spring 12: Whereas now and then a thick or rough saWn piece requires the application of sudden extra pressure to prevent it from stopping in its passage through the machine and this is more particularly the case with hard Woods.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
r 1. In a roller feeding device, the combination With the machine frame and a feed roll, of a rock-shaft extending parallel With the feed roll having a pair of horizontally extending arms and a vertically extending arm, connections extending directly from the horizontal arms to the feed roll boxes, a sprinv engaging the vertical arm to rotate the roc r-shaft and a tension rod connecting the spring and frame and adjustable to vary the pressure on the rock-shaft and feed roll.
2. In a roller feeding device, the combination with the frame and a feed roll, a rockshaft journaled in the frame having arms connected to the feed roll boxes at the ends of the roll, means for rotating the rockshaft and a foot lever extending outside of the frame and connected to the rock-shaft whereby the pressure on the entire feed roll can be increased by the operator When desired.
3. In a roller feeding mechanism, the combination with the frame and a feed roll thereon, of a rock-shaft journaled in the frame having a single radial arm and a pair of radial arms, connections from said pair of arms to the journal boxes of the Copies of this patent may be obtained for thereon, of a rock-shaft journaled in the frame having radial arms connected to the journal boxes at the ends of the feed roll, a spring operating on the rock-shaft to rotate it, a rotatable, threaded tension rod" journaled in the frame, a nut on the rod engaging the spring and cooperating With the frame to prevent rotation.

In a roller feeding device a rock shaft journaled on the machine frame, arms projecting radially from said rock shaft, con- I nections from said arms directly to the journal boxes of the feed roll,v a spiral spring arranged to give a torsional impulse to the rock shaft, a screw rod provided With means for adjusting the tension of the spring, and a foot lever attached to said rock shaft to instantly increase the feeding pressure on the stock independently of, the
spring adjustment when required.
