JOI-IN T. MINCI-IER AND ELIJAH L. WRIGHT, OF BILLARD, MISSOURI.
RAIL-JOINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1918.
Application filed November 9, 1916. Serial No. 130,366.
To all 'whom z't may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN T. MINCHER and ELIJAH L. WRIGHT, citizens of the United States, residing at Dillard, in the county of Crawford and State of Missouri, have invented certain useful Improvements .in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in rail joints, one object of the invention being the provision'of a rail joint in which the holding members are carried by the base of the rail, and by means of which the web of the rail is also braced and the parts securely held in place without the use of bolts, ishplates or angleplates.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a rail joint which is simple, durable and inexpensive in construction, and which is thoroughly ellicient and practical in use.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a side elevation of the complete joint. t
Fig. 2 is a top plan view'thereof, a portion of the tread of the rail being broken away to show the relative position of the parts when assembled.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the male end of the rail.
Fig. et is a similar view of the female enc of the rail.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates one rail section and 6 the opposite rail section, the base 7 of the section 5 being provided with the spaced connectin members 8, each one of which is provided with a hooked terminal 9.
terminals 8 are provided with the projecting portions 12, by means of which the web 10 of the rail section 6 is braced upon each side at the joint, thus preventing the torsional strain thrown upon the rail section from breaking the joint.
lhat we claim as new is:-
In a device of the class described, in combination, a pair of meeting rails, a pair of substantially wedge shaped connecting members formed integrally upon the opposing side flanges of said rail, each of said connecting members consisting of an upwardly projecting portion, a horizontal portion and a terminal right angular hook portion formed on each connecting member projecting forwardly of the mentioned rail and the outer side of said upwardly proj ecting portion inclining toward the base of the connecting member and attaining the width of the flange upon which it is formed, the opposing side flanges of the opposite rail being provided with openings receiving the terminal hooks .of said connecting members, and a pair of outwardly projecting portions formed integrally and laterally of said connecting members at the sides of the web of therails and adapted to engage against said webs.
In testimony whereof we a'liX our signatures.
` JOHN T. MINCHER.
E. L. WRIGHT.
