Be it known that I, ARTHUR A. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Lyndhurst, in the county of Bergenand State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type- Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification. Y I
This invention relates to .an improvement in typewriting machines, and more particu-A larly to a fan-fold attachment for making manifold copies 'continuously., using the same set of carbon sheets. -This case is an improvement on' my application, No. 17 6,488, led June 23, 1917, and on the patent .to "vii/'ernery and` Smith, No. 1,132,055, dated March 1 6, 1915. @ne of the objects of the invention is to providev improved means for enabling the same sheets of carbon to be used repeatedly with a number of successive sections of a fan-fold web, so that the sheet and carbon leaves will b e always assembled relatively to each other ina pack. As one portion of each carbon sheet is worn out, afresh. portion may be drawn on to replace it. Thisl avoids the necessity of frequently taking apart the assembled pack of interleaved carbon sheets and web.
For the purpose of facilitating the use of the continuous supply of carbon with the continuous fan-fold web, the plies of the web are threaded between a series of diagonal guides or warping bars, which direct the carbon sheets from the side into line with and between the layers of the fanfold web. The supply rolls from which the carbon sheets are drawn are mounted on the table carriage on which the bars or guides are mounted. This table carriage moves f orward with the advancing line-space rotation of the platen. Thus, thecarbon sheets and their source of supply -keep pace with the l movement of the web. The carbon sheets are Vmoved rearwardly relatively to. the worksheets, by pushing thetable-carrlage rearwardly. Tn doing this, the carbon sheets are y not ordinarily withdrawn from their rolls, as only that portion which is between the folds of the work-sheet web is used. Locking or clamping means is provided for premay be released when it-is necessary to re new the carbon sheets between the folds of the work-sheet web.
The platen is raised, as more particularly described in the above-mentioned patent, for straightening out the bend in the assembled work web and`- carbon sheets, to enable the relative displacement or spacing between the same.

This fan-fold web, as a whole, is in a continuous strip which may or may not have printed forms thereon to lbe torn off successively as typewritten to form separate bills or letters. The web 15, in order to have the matter typewritten on 'the exposed layers take on the under layers to form duplicate copies, must be interleaved with carbon sheets 16. There are four of these tar-Y bon sheets shown, one for each of the under layers of the fan-fold web. To `direct the carbon sheets 16 from a source of supply off to one side to a position between the layers or folds of the web 15, there are provided a work-sheet web and the carbon sheets in' a line-space direction, so as to keep pace with the rotation of the platen. .The table 19 also keeps pace with the letter-space movements of the platen l by. being mounted on an extension 20 carried by the typewriter Acarriage 5. This extension is supported by a roll 21 running on a rail 22, provided on a bracket 23, extending rearwardly '.rom the typewriter frame. The mounting of the traveling table 19 may be of any suitable character, as by means of wheels 24, traveling in rails 25 provided by the extension 20. Although the carbon sheets may-be. used repeatdly with a number of successive sections oie the work-sheet web, in the' course of time the vorn out.

The rolls 26 may be detachably mounted in bearings 27, so that when all the carbonpaper on them is used up, they can be replaced by fresh rolls. For this purpose, the bearings 27 are open bearingsclosed by springs 28,- which engage the axles of the rolls 26.
In order that the carbon paper may not be drawn from the rolls 26 until it is desired to renew that portion of the carbon sheets which is'between the folds of the web, there are provided paper locks. or clamps -29 and 30, one for each pair of canbon rolls 26. These -clamps each comprise a stationary jaw 31 and a pivoted jaw 32. Normally, the pivoted jaws 32 are'held in the position of Fig. 3 gripping :the carbon-sheet strips between them. Y This is done by providing each of the swinging jaws with a pin 33. These pins extend into cam slots 34 provided in levers 35 and 36. The levers 35 and 36 are connected by a link 37, so as to move in unison, 'thereby' closing o r opening thev clamps 29 and 30 in unison.

The cam slots 34 are 'formed with end dwells (see 3 and 5) so that they will automatically swing the pivoted jaws 32 according to the direction of movement of the levers 35 and 36, and the dwells will lock, them in their open or closed position.` 1n this way, the'supplyof carbon paper is not drawn on until needed, although the movement of the work-sheet web relative to the carbon sheets would tend to draw the carbon paper from the roll.' Y The utility of the devicev will be readily understood when taken in connection with the above description, Starting 'with the .assembled pack of work-sheet web and carbon sheets, in position on the platen to be written on, the bill or other piece of work is typewritten line -by line. The web and carbon sheets will advance line by line with the line-space movements of the platen. The web and carbon sheets will draw the" traveling table 19 along with them, and there will be no appreciable relative movement between the table and either the web or carbon sheets, the latter being locked by the clamps 29 and 30.
