BAG.
Application 'filed August25, 1917.
T0 allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that -I, MARGARITA Gauss HUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vashington, in the District of, Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bags, of which the following is a specification;
The presentinvention relates to bags, and more particularly to a bag for carrying knitting paraphernalia and knitted work.
An object is to provide a bag'of this character embodying a construction wherein the Work is segregated from the paraphernalia so that needles and the like cannot be readily entangled in the work when placed in the bag; a bag which may be easily and comfortably carried upon the arm; and a bag to which access may be readily had.
The invention also aims at the provision of a knitting bag provided with separate compartments for the work and the needles or other articles used in knitting; a bag of such construction that access may be readily had to its various compartments; a bag which is normally retained in closed position and which may be easily opened by applying slight pressure to the closure parts thereof; and a bag which is of relatively simple construction and neat in design.
The above, and various other objects and advantages of this invention will be in part described and in part understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view of a bag constructed according to the present inventiOn. a
i Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the bag, showing in dotted lines the upper compartment thereof open.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side elevation of the upper portion of the bag, partly in section, showing a pair of knitting needles arranged in the upper compartment.
Referring to this drawing 10 and 11 designate the opposite side walls of the bag which may be made of separate portions of the desired fabric and stitched together at the edges to form an inclosure or pocket for the reception of knitted work partially or wholly completed. The sides 10 and 11 are provided along their upper edge portions with inherently stiff flexible strips 12 and i I Specification of Letters Patent.

portions of the sides 10 and 11. These strips 12 and 13 are stitched or otherwise suitably connected together at opposite endszto normally and yieldingly hold the strips in sub-- stantially surface contact throughout their The strips 12 and 13 thus nor- Patented Nov. 12, 1918. i
' 13 which may be of greater length than the W width of the bag and extend beyond the edge r The strips IQ-and 13 are of considerable 7 width as compared with their lengths and form between them an upper pocket or compartment for the bag. The bottom of the upper compartment is maintained closed by a pair of separable fasteners 15 which may be of the ball and socket type shown, and of course may be of any desired number. These fasteners 15 are secured to the inner opposite faces of the strips near their lower edges, and are adapted to secure the lower compartment closed and prevent articles placed in the upper compartment from falling into the lower compartment.
The upper compartment is maintained closed by one or more separable fasteners 16 which may also be of the ball and socket type. In the present instance one fastener 16 is shown, the same being located at the upper edges and intermediate the ends of the.
strips 12 and 13.
To facilitate the carrying of the bag a pair of straps 17 may be employed, the latter being preferably formed of flexible material and secured at their free ends to the upper edge portions of the opposed strips 12 and 13. The straps 17 may be looped over the arm for conveniently suspending the bag, and may be readily swung edgewise over the opposite ends of the strips 12 and 13 when it is desired to open and close the bag.
It is of course understood that the bag may be finished in any suitable artistic design, and may be made from any suitable material. It is also understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the detail construction of the bag without departing from the spirit of this invention, the changes or modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.
What is claimed is:
l. A knitting bag comprising a body part open at its top, opposed strips secured along the opposite upper edges or the body part and secured together at their ends, means for detachably connecting the lower edge portions of the strips together for closing the body part and forming a compartment between the strips, and means for detachably securing the upper edge portions of the strips together for closing the upper compartment.
2. A knitting bag comprising a body part open at its top and providing a'compartment, a pair of opposed strips secured along the opposite upper edges of the body part and extending beyond the same and secured together at opposite ends to provide a second compartment of greater Width than the top of the bag, means for detachably securing the upper edge portions of the bag together for closing said first compartment and the bottom of said second compartment, and other means for detachably securing the upper edge portions of the strips together for closing the second compartment.
3. A knitting bag comprising a body part open at its top and providing a compartment, a pair of opposed strips secured along the opposite upper edges of the body part and extending beyond the same and secured together at opposite ends to provide a sec ond compartment of greater width than the top of the bag, means for detachably securing the upper edge portions of the bag together for closing said first compartment and the bottom of said second compartment,.
other means for detachably securing the upper edge portions of the strips together for closing the second compartment, and a pair of looped straps having their opposite ends secured in substantially transverse alinement to the opposite upper edge portions of the strips near the ends of the latter.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature.
