Specication of Letters Patent.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. FIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holbrook, county of Norfolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hollow Panels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to a new and useful improvement in hollow panels composed of two parallel plates forming the respective faces of the panel and an interposed truss plate which is united to the two face plates. The invention is especially intended to be applied in the construction of panels for use in making boxes, more particularly that type of boxes in which the panels have hinged connection with each other so that the box may be folded or knocked down, but the invention is not limited to use in connection with the manufacture of folding boxes, or even boxes of any character, as it is applicable to the construction of hollow panels for any purpose .in which strength and lightness are both desired. For convenience of illustration the drawingsshow the invention as applied to a box panel.
One object of the present invention is to provide a double reinforcement by combining together two complementary renforcing or truss plates to stiffen and brace the two face plates, and which are united in such manner as to stilfen and support each other. Another object of the invention is to form the truss plate in spider form with radiating branches so arranged as to form strut portions and stiffening contact surfaces angularly arranged with relation to each other for the purpose of giving greater stiffness than when the said branches are arranged parallel with each other.
The invention will be fullyunderstood from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features thereof will. be pointed out and clearly defined 1n the claim at the close of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a box panel constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a blank died out y to proper shape from which to form one of the reinforcing or truss plates.
Fig. 3 is a planview of the truss plate formed out of the blank shown in Fig. 2 by turning up the side edges of each arm to form flanges, and with the metal around the central aperture drawn out to form an annular flange.
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a section on line 6 6 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 7 is a section on line 7 7 of Fig. l.
Referring now to the drawings, 1, 2 represent the two face plates of the panel which for convenience will be referred to as the upper and lower face plates respectively. The two truss plates are preferably formed nearly alike, there being a slight difference in the width of the arms so that they may Veasily be shut together one over the other.
In the preferred form of construction each truss plate is formed out of a blank which is first died out in the shape shown mFig. 2, having a central body portion .3
from which there extend longitudinally aty both ends in opposite directions, the twofend arms 4, 5. There are also two oppositely extending arms 6, 7 which extend in a line at right angles to the axis of the arms 4, 5. There is a diagonally extending pair of arms 8, 9 which extend in` alinement with each other at an angle between the end arms 4, 5 and the cross arms 6,` 7, and another pair of diagonally extending arms 10, 11in alinement with each other extending in op'- posite directions fromk the center of the body 3 whose axis crosses the axis of the arms 8, 9 at an angle, the arms 10, 11 forming with the arms 8, 9 a cross shaped gure.
At the inner or junction ends of the `arms .6, 7 with the body 3 there is formed at each edgeav slot 12 which is not only cut into the edges of the arms 6,y but into one edge of each of the diagonal arms 8, 9, 10 and 11. On each edge of the two longitudinal arms 4, 5 there is formed a slot 13 which also cuts into one edge of each of the diagonal arms 8, 9, 10 and 11 respectively. These slots leave each arm with a laterally pro jecting flange portion on each edge which in the further shaping of the truss plate out of the blank may be turned atright angles to the plane of the plate as shown in Fig. 3 so that a cross sectional View through each arm will show a trough shape as in Fig. 5. The view in Fig. 5 shows particularly a section through the arm 7, but this illustrat-es the trough or Ufshaped appearance of each one of the arms in the portions where the flanges are turned up. In order to save the employment of an unnecessarily large number of reference characters each one of the up-turned side flanges of the several arms isy designated by 14C.
In the middle of the blanlr shown in Fig. 2 there is formed an aperture 15. In the further shaping of the truss plate out of the blank the metal around this aperture is drawn out to enlarge the aperture and form an annular flange or lip 16 of the same height as the side flanges of the seve l arms. YM lnorder that the truss plate may fit prop erly into a rectangular contour the outer edges of each diagonal arm 8, 9, 10 and 11 is formed with a beveled corner 17 in such manner that the beveled corners 17 of the arms 9, 10 will be in a straight line with the outer end of the cross arm. 7, and the beveled edges 17, 17 of the arms 8, 11 will be in a straight line with each other and With the end of the arm 6. The outer ends of the arms 9, 5 and11 are all in a straight line andthe outer ends of the arms 8,Jl and 10 are in a straight line with each other so that the truss plate after the flanges have been bent up as shown in Fig. 3 will lit within a rectangular outline drawn around the ends of all the arms,A such outline corresponding with the contour of the yface plates between which the truss is interposed.
Two truss plates, each complete asshown in Fig.l 3, may be assembled together by placing them so that the flanges of the under plate extend upwardV and the flanges of the lower plate extend downward as shown in Fig. 6, the annular flange 16 of one of said truss plates shutting down over the upwardlyT extending annular flange 16 of the other truss plate and the side edge flanges of. the arms of the upper truss plate shutting downvover the upwardly extending side edge flanges of the arms of the lower truss plate so that when they are combined there will be aflat upper face anda flat lower face for the combined truss plate. The flanges of one truss plate are seated upon the inner face of the companion truss plate, and the flanges of said companion truss plate are seated upon the inner surface of one of the face plates.
united together and also the overlapping flange portions of the two truss members are firmly united together. They are preferably united by the so-called process of sweating which consists of a fusion of a soft metal coating on the contacting surfaces of the two members or by soldering. It is important that the flanges be united together as wellr that the face plates shall be united to the truss plates in order to make a perfectly firm union and prevent any spreading apart of the flanges of the truss plates under pressure upon the outside of the face plates. The union between the parts is preferably performed by sweating or soldering or by welding because this makes the completed panel virtually integral, but other forms of union may be employed and still come within the scope of the invention.
The interengaging annular flanges 16 of the two truss plates are united together as well as the interengaging flanges of the spider arms. Thisunion between ythe annular flanges may be effected at the same sweating operation as that by which the spider arm flanges are united.
What l claim is 1. A hollow panely comprising two face plates and an interposed truss composed of two plates each having spider arms formed with turned' flanges which engage with corresponding flanges in the companion member of the truss, forming a hollow spider shaped truss with at outside faces, the flat faces of the truss being united to the flat faces of the face plate. l
2. A. panel comprising two face plates parallel with and spacedA apart from eachother and an interposedl truss having spiderv arms formed with strut portions which extend across the space between the two plates and have flat faced portions some of which engage with one of the face plates and others of which engage withl the other face plate, the contacting surfaces of the truss and face plates being firmly united together.
3. A panel comprisingtwo face plates parallel with and spaced apart from each other and an interposed truss composed of two plates each having a body portion and arms extending in different directions therefrom in the same plane, each of said arms having anges extending at right angles-to theplane of the body of the plate, said trussplates being assembled facing in opposite direci tions to each other so that the flanges ofone truss plate interengage with the flanges of the other truss plate, the flanges-of one truss plate being seated upon; the i-nner face of the companion truss plate and the flanges of said companion plate being seated upon the innerl surface of one of the face plates when the parts are assembled, one of the outer faces of the combined truss engaging with the inner face of one of the face plates and the other outer face of the combined truss engaging with the inner face of the other face plate, the contacting faces of the truss and face plates being firmly united together.
4. A panel comprising two face plates parallel with and spaced apart from each other and an interposed truss composed of two plates each having a body portion and arms extending in different directions therefrom in the same plane, each of said arms having flanges extending at right angles to the plane of the body of the plate, the body of each truss plate being formed with an annular flange extending at right angles to the plane of the body, said truss plates being assembled facing in opposite directions to each other so that the flanges of one truss plate interengage With the anges of the other truss plate, the flanges of one truss plate being seated upon the inner face of the companion truss plate and the flanges of said companion truss plate being seated upon the inner surface of one of the face plates when the parts are assembled, one of the outer faces of the combined truss engaging with the inner face of one of the face,
