specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 27, 1917!. Serial No. 157,761.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT NUsBAUM, a citizen of the United $tates, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Garbagedtteceptacles, of which the following is a specification.
"My invention relates to improvements n concrete garbage receptacles and has for its object the production of a device of this character which will be of durable andec0- nomical construction, highly sanitary in use, and in whichthe closures cooperating with the openings thereof will be arranged in cooperative relation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed. 1 1 j 1.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this-specification, and in which, i
Figure 1 is a vertical section through a concrete garbage receptacle, embodying the invention,
7 Fig. 2, a fragmentary detail section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. I,
Fig. 3, a top plan view of the receptacle with a portion of the top closure broken away, and
Fig. 4, a partially sectional front elevation of the receptacle.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a receptacle 5 of rectangular form and of in tegral concrete construction. Formed in the top wall of said receptacle is an inlet opening 6 and formed in the front wall of said receptacle is an outlet opening 7.
Cooperating with the opening 6 is a sheet metal closure 8 having its rearward end embracing a rod 9 which is loosely mounted in eye bolts 10, the lower ends of which are buried or anchored in the top wall of the receptacle adjacent the opening 6, as clearly seen in Figs. 1 and 3. The construction is such, as will be seen, as to permit of free upward swinging of the closure 8, in order to gain access to the opening 6 for the deposlt of garbage into the receptacle. The front end of the closure 8 is bent downwardly and outwardly to form a tight joint when the closure is in a closed position and to constitute a handle or grip which will facilitate opening of the closure.
Cooperating with the outlet opening 7 is a vertically sliding sheet metalclosure 12, which snugly and slidably engages with a transversely extending slot 13 formed in the top wall of the receptacle, adjacentto the hinge of closure 8. Formed in the concrete at either side of opening? are grooves 14: with which slidably engage the lateral edges of closure 12, said grooves 1-1 being in alinement, as seen, with the slot 13. The upper end of closure 12 projects exteriorly and is formed with a forwardly extending flange 15 adapted to constitute a grip or handle to facilitate upward sliding or opening of said closure.
The closure 12 is positioned, as seen, so that thehinge of closure 8 is parallel with the plane of the former and adjacent thereto. Also the closure 12, when the latter is in lowered or closed position, projects upwardly from the top of the receptacle to such an extent as to constitute a stop for the closure 8' limiting opening movement of the same and serving to support said closure 8 in open position, as clearly seen in dotted lines in Fig. I. Said member 12 thus serves the double function of a closure for the opening 7 and a stop and support for the closure 8.
Also with this arrangement, in case the closure 12 has been removed, or is not in fully closed position, a depositor of garbage into the receptacle will be immediately advised of this upon opening of the closure 8, since, without the closure 12 being properly arranged in closed position, the closure 8 will not be supported in its normal. open position. Also the engagement of the closure 8 with the upper end of closure 12 has a tendency to force the latter downwardly so that in the event of said closure 12 not be ing fully closed, said closure 8 will gradually force the same downwardly to its lower terminal of movement. I Through the snug engagement of the closure 12 with the slot 13 in the top wall of the receptacle, said closure is efiectually reinforced, so as to be adapted to withstand the pressure which is applied thereto when the upper end thereof is engaged by closure 8, as seen in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into edect, this is capable of Manama. a, rats.
variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A concrete garbage receptacle having openings in its top and one of its lateral walls; a sliding closure for said lateral opening; and grooves formed in the concrete at the sides of said lateral opening and a slot formed in the top of the receptacle in alinement with said grooves for engagement by said closure, substantially as described.
2. A concrete garbage receptacle having openings in its top and one of its lateral walls; a hinged closure for said top opening; and a sliding closure for said lateral opening adapted to constitute a stop for said hinged closure to limit opening movement thereof, substantially as described.
3. A concrete garbage receptacle having openings in its top and one of its lateral walls; a hinged closure for said top opening; and a sliding closure for. said lateral open ing adapted, when in closed position, to con stitute a stop for said hinged closure to limit opening movement thereof and support said hinged closure in open position, substantially as described.
4. A concrete garbage receptacle havin openings in its top and one of its laterzfi walls; a hinged closure at the top of said rcceptacle for cooperation with said top opening, the hinge of said closure being positioned parallel with the plane of said lateral opening and adjacent thereto; and a vertically sliding closure for said lateral opening adapted to constitute a stop for said hinged closure to limit opening movement thereof and to support said hinged closure in open position, substantially as described.
5. A concrete garbage receptacle having openings in its top and one of its lateral walls; a hinged closure at the top of said receptacle for cooperation with said top opening, the hinge of said closure being positioned parallel with the plane of said lateral opening and adjacent thereto; and a vertically sliding closure for said lateral opening adapted to constitute a stop for said hinged closure to limit opening movement thereof and to support said hinged closure in open position, the top wall of said receptacle having a slot with which said sliding closure snugly and slidably engages, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
