Be it known that I, PETER M. BOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Metal Signs, 'of which the followingis a specification.`

y invention relates to improvements in metal or other malleable signs.

It consists` in the outline of the desired letters or figures upon the back of the sheet metal, then by means of a punch or tool suited for the purpose, to indent the surface from the rear and correspondingly raise it from the front, following the outline of the impression in a series of raised protuberances. lln conjunction with this, a flat border line is formed, and shade lines in the whole or parts of the letter or ligure may be made.

Fig. 2 shows a letter with the shade lines, and Fig. 3 shows a letter cut out from the Sheet and the exterior surrounded by the ornamentation.

n carryin out my invention lf take a sheet of meta preferably a metal which' is malleable and of suliicient size to contain the letter, word, or figure at A, which it is desired to produce. ll draw in outline upon the surface of the metal, the required letter or design and indicate upon the back by punch-marks or indentations 5, the form of the design which is shown upon the front. l then take tools and by blows or pressure ll indent the letter or design with a series of irregular figures as at 2, which raises the front surface of the plate correspondingly, and when complete form the design which is shown in these irregular raises, marks, or figures. The design thus made may be gilded, silvered, or painted in any required orf namental style, and to complete the gures specification of Letters Patent. Application tiled October 9, 1916.

Having thus described ll claim and desire to secure by Letters Fatent is A. metal sign character composed of a malleable plate the edges of` which are shaped so as to have a marginal outline of that character and its shade surfaces and having straight uninterrupted lines of indentation formed by pressing the plate outwardly from the back thereof, said lines fo lowing only the margin of the character and beingp arranged in spaced parallel relation to the margin so as to form a Hat border,

extending completely throughout and projecting outwardly from the front face of the plate, said plate also having portions to indicate surfaces extending outwardly and downwardly from the low-light parts of said border and beine substantially border.
