To all whom it may concern: Be it known that W8,-DAVID lb. LIND- QUIST, a subject of the King of Sweden, and CHARLES E. MANVILLE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Yonkers, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Tmprovement in Controlling Systems, of which the following is a specification.
Uur invention relates to an automatic system of electrical control for bell hoisting mechanism for use in connection with blast furnaces.
An object of the invention is the provision of a novel system of electrical control operable automatically to efiect the operation of the large and small bells.
Another object of the invention is to provide means by which the sequence of operation between the small and large bell may be changed at will, to suit a number of different charging requirements of the furnace, or in other words these means are for the purpose of selectively predetermining the sequence of operation between the two bells.
A further object is to provide means for efl'ecting an emergency or cleaning operation of the bells, independently of the automatic operation.
@ther objects are to provide means for adding an extra skip load to a round, without disrupting the sequence controlling apparatus; and to provide a timing element for automatically controlling the large bell motive means to keep the bell in open position for a pre-determined period of time in order to breathe the furnace, and to then automatically complete the-cycle of operation by closing the bell.
Other objects will appear novel combinations of elements being pointed out in the annexed claims.
In charging a blast furnace, the skip is loaded with a predetermined weight of coke, ore, limestone, etc, and discharges its load into a small bell, which is of substantially 5 .thesame capacity as that of the skip. As
soon as the skip load is discharged into the ,small' bell, the latter is raised and delivers load into a large or'mixing bell, which remains closed until it has received a predetermined number of charges of difierent hereinafter, the
operations before the large bell is operated, and it 13 one of the objects of our invention to provide automatic means which are selective for controlling the sequence of operation between the large and small bells, and also the sequence of operation between the skips and the said bells.
In the drawings, Figure 1 illustrates a furnace or skip hoist containing an embodiment of our invention; Fig. 2 is a wiring diagram illustrating the electrical controlling system for the small and large bell hoists, together with only such controlling elements forthe main skip hoist as are interconnected with the first mentioned electrical controlling system; Fig. 3 illustrates partly in section, a detail view of an electrically operated device for automatically controlling the sequence of operation between the small and large bell hoists, and Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate certain parts of the device as viewed from the front of the Fig. 3.
Referring to Fig. l, a blast furnace A is charged with ore, limestone, coke, etc., by means of skips l4 and O. which travel over inclined tracks Q. The skips are connected to opposite ends of a cable E, which is wrapped about a winding drum H, operated by a motor M. The latter is housed in a power house Gr, which contains the controlling mechanism Z and a master switch Z for the skip. A floor controller F of a well known type is" driven from the main driving shaft J through a sprocket and chain connection K, and the ratio between the sprockets is such that an opening of either of the contacts 46 or 47 is effected when either of the skips approach within a short distance of the lower landing as hereinafter described.
The bells, etc., at the top of the furnace may be of any well known construction, and comprise a receptacle or hopper l to receive charges delivered by the skips, .said hopper having its lower end closed by a small bell 2. bell is lowered and is closed at the bottom by a large bell 4. The small and large bells are provided with power mechanism X and X respectively, which are similar in construction, and may be of any well-known construction, and in this instance comprise small electric motors M, M'-, and electromechanical brakes B. The motor M is provided with a series field winding 19, and a shunt field Winding 20, said motor being connected through worm and gearing or other speed reduction mechanism to drive a pinion. An annular gear 7 is in mesh with the pinion, and is connected through a crank shaft connection to a connecting rod 6, connected at one end of a lever 8, to which is connected a walking beam 9. The walking beam associated with the small bell is pivoted at 8' to the overhead framework, one of its ends being connected to a hollow rod or tube 9' which is secured to the small bell. The walking beam 8 associated with the large bell is pivoted at 10 to an overhead framework, one of its ends being connected to a rod 11, which extends through the tube 9 and is secured to the large bell. 'A counterweight 12 is guided over a sheave 13, and is connected to the lever 8 associated with the small bell. A counterweight 14 is connected to the lever 8 associated with them large bell.
Cams T and T on the periphery of the gears 7 and 7 respectively, permit the closing of-normally open contacts associated with switches 16 and 17, directly upon the rotation of said gears, and will open said contacts upon a complete revolution of the gears, and thereby effect the stopping of the power mechanism in a manner herelnafter described.
An additional normally closed switch 17' is positioned to be opened by the cam T. when the gear 7' has made approximately one half revolution.
Referring now to Fig. 2, in addition to the parts already pointed out, I will now designate the various parts which control the power mechanism X, which actuates the small bell; a direct current source of supply designated and a main line switch P; an accelerating mag'net O which controls a starting resistance 18, and series field 19; a
shunt field 20; a stopping magnet S which controls the stopping resistance 21; a making push button 22; a breaking push button 23; a self holding magnet 24; and an auxiliary operating magnet 25; the parts which control the power mechanism X which actuates the large bell are as follows: a main line switch P; an accelerating magnet O which controls a starting resistance 18 and series field 19'; a shunt field 20, a stopping magnet S whiCh controls the stopping resistance 21; a making push button 22'; a breaking push button 23; a self holding magnet 24'; and an auxiliary operating magnet 25'. In addition to these members are contacts 26, adapted to be closed upon the operation of a reversing switch U, and contacts 27, adapted to be closed upon the operation of a reversing switch D. The reversing switches U and D are controlled in a well known manner'by the master switch Z, to reverse the current through the skip motor M.
Additional parts are a slow closing electro-magnetic switch 104 controlling contacts 105, knife switch 29, and a two blade plug or changeover switch 28 which may be interchanged manually to engage an one set at a time, of the xed contacts {comprising four to a set), as formed by the squares designated 2, 3, 4 and 6. By means of this knife switch used in conjunction with the electrical distribution device 30, the sequence of operation between the small and large bell hoists, may be changed or predetermined to meet the furnace charging requirements of either 2, 3, 4 or 6 loads, or in other words, the automatic operation of the large bell may be effected after every 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 6th op-- eration of the small bell.
The electrical distributer 30, which is illustrated by the Figs. 3, 4 and 5, consists in detail-of-a casingY, provided with a removable cover 90 which is secured thereto by the thumb screws 91. A magnet winding 41 is contained in the casing, and its armature 92 is adapted to rotate an electrical conductor ringer distributer 36, through a pawl and ratchet connection. The electrical distributer 36 is rotatable with a shaft 99, but is insulated therefrom by the insulating membars 101. The electrical distributer consists substantially of segmental contacts 32, 32', 33 and 34, the contacts at their inner ends formin a continuous ring, upon which bears a .fi xe contact finger 39, which may be termed the supply contact. The segmental contacts 32 and 32 are spaced substantially 180 apart, the segmental contacts 33 and 34 being spaced 60 from the contact 32', but on opposite centers relatively with the latter. Additional fixed contact fingers are indicated at 38, 40, 40' and 40". The segmental contacts 33 and 34 are made shorter in length than the segmental contacts 32 and 32, and are adapted only to engage the fixed contact fingers designated 38 and 40. The segmental contact 32 is of greater length than the contact 33 and 34, and will engage the contact fingers 38, and 40, and also the contact fingers 40' and 40", the latter two fingers being ofi'set relatively with the fingers 38 and 40, so as not to be engaged by the shorter segmental contacts 33 and 34. The segmental contact 32' is constructed to engage only the contact fingers 40 and 40", it being split as indicated in the drawing, Fig. 3), the split portion being in alinement III with the position of the fixed contact fingers" 38 and 4:0, and thus by this construction the said segmental contact will not engage with the said fingers 38 and 40. The contactfingers 38, 40, 40', etc., are secured to, but insulated from the casing Y. The fingers 38 and 40 are spaced substantially 180 apart, the finger 40 being spaced 60 from the finger 38, and the finger 40 being spaced 30 from the finger i0.
The ratchet is fixed on the shaft 99, and the pawl is connected through a vertically guided lever 94 to the magnet armature 92. The ratchet is provided with 12 teeth and the pawl is limited in its upward movement by a stop member 94:, so that each operation of the armature 92 effects a 30 rotation of the electrical ring or distributer 30. The lever 91 through its engagement with the bolt heads, seats the armature 92 in its unattracted position. A spring pressed disk 110 bears against the lateral face of the ratchet wheel hub, and serves as a friction brake, to prevent spinning of the ratchet wheel.
The segmental contacts coact with the fixed contacts as follows for a given sequence of operation as determined b the position of the knife switch 28, illustrated in Fig. 2 and it will be here noted that the designation of each square designates a corresponding sequence it being necessary to insert the knife switch into the contacts forming the square corresponding to the sequence of operation wanted between the small and large bell hoists.
For a frequency of two, the controlling coacting contacts of the electrical distributer are, segmental contacts 32, 33 and 34, and the fixed contacts 38 and 40; for a frequency of three, segmental contacts 32 and 32, and fixed contacts 40' and 40 for a frequency of four, segmental contacts 32, 33 and 34, and fixed contacts 38; and for a frequency of six, segmental contacts 32 and 32', and fixed contact 40".
In Fig. 2, the electrical distributer just described is illustrated diagrammatically and it will be noted that the fixed contact designated 39 serves as a supply to the seg-- mental contacts 32, 33, etc.
The push buttons 22, 23, 22 and 23 are for emergency use only, and are contained in a locked box Z, which maybe placed in a suitable housing located on the upper structure of the furnace, or in the power house G as shown.
' A. brief description of the mode of operation of the floor controller will now be given. The contacts 46 and 47 control a system of circuits arranged to prevent an operation of the small bell other than is intended. as for example, in case the skips are stopped and again started at an intermediate skip L approacheswithin a short distance of the bottom landing, the contacts 46 are automatically opened, and after said skip has moved a short distance in its ascending direction of travel, the contacts are again closed, as are the contacts 47, which are automatically opened when the skip (1 approaches within. a short distance of the bottom landing, and are again automatically closed after said skip has moved a short distance in its ascending direction of travel.
The operation of the various parts shown in Fig. 2 will now be described, and it is to be noted, that when referring to the up and down reversing switches which control the direction of travel of the skips C and L, it will be necessary only to associate said switches with one of the skips. With the parts as shown, the skip C is at its upper limit of travel, said direction of travel beln'g controlled by the up reversing switch U, carrying contacts 26. Assuming now that the skip C has discharged its load into the small bell. Upon the operation of the down reversing switch D, a circuit is established for the winding 48 of the main line switch P, which is as follows: from the conductor 49, contacts 27, conductor 50, conductor 52, contacts 53, conductors 54: and 56, through the winding 18, conductor 57, back contacts 58 on the main line switch 1P conductor 59, to the main line conductor associated with the large bell hoist controller. The main line switch P will now close, thereby establishing circuits for the motor, series field, shunt field and brake ma net winding, the motor circuit being as folTows: conbrush 62, through motor M, brush 63, starting resistance 18, series field 19, conductor 64, contacts 65, to line. The brake circuit branches from conductor 61 at the junction 61', conductor 66, through the winding of the brake mechanism B, conductor 67, con 'tacts 68, conductor 69 to the line. The
shunt field circuit branches from conductor of the gear 7, the cam T is rotated out of engagement with the roller 82, associated with the switch 16, whereupon the latter will close ductor, through contacts 60, conductor 61,

former set establishing a circuit therepoint between the limits of travel. As the through which is in parallel with the circuit including the contacts 53 heretofore described for the Winding of the main line switch P. The contacts 55 establish a circuit by way of the'floor controller'contacts for the winding of the magnet24 as follows: conductor 49', contacts 47, conductor 74, through the contacts 46, the floor controller having operated enough to again close said contacts as heretofore described, conductor 75, conductor 52, winding of self holding magnet 24, contact 79, conductor 76, con tacts 55", and conductor 77 to line. This circuit followed to the conductor 52, it will be noted is in parallel to the circuit controlled by the main line switch contacts 27. The magnet 24 will now operate and open the contacts 53 and close the contacts 79 which establish a self holding circuit for the self holding magnet. It will be seen that the contacts 53 which heretofore contained the circuit of the winding of the switch P, are now open, but the circuit for said winding is maintained by the switch 16 as follows: conductor 49, contacts 27, conductor 50, conductor 52, contacts 55", conductor 56, winding of switch P, conductor 57, back contacts 58, conductor 59 to line.
One'complete revolution of the gear 7 effects the opening and closing of the small bell 2, whereupon the cam will effect the opening of the contacts 55 and 55 associated with switch 16, the former contacts openin% the circuit of the winding of the switch The switch P will now open and thereby disconnect the motor from its source of supply, and the brake mechanism, with the assistance ofthe stopping magnet which' controls the resistance 21 to efi'ect a dynamic braking action, will now efi'ectthe stopping of the motor.
It will here be noted that the self holding magnet 24 and floor controller contacts protect against another operation of the hoisting mechanism X, if for any reason the reversing switch D is opened and again closed when the skips are in an intermediate point between the limits of travel. This is so for the reason that the self holding magnet 24 remains energized to keep open the contacts 53 which are initially included in the circuit of the winding 48, until the floor controller contacts 47 open, which is effected when the skip C approaches within a short distance of the bottom landing, at which time the small bell has been opened'and closed and ready for another charge.
Proceeding now with the operation of the sequence switch and associated parts: With the knife switch 28 inserted in the position indicated in Fig. 2 and with the contacts associated with the controller 30 bearing a relative position as shown, an automatic operationof the large bell hoisting mechamsm X will be effected after every third operation of the small bell; the operation in detail being as follows: Assuming the switch P in closed position for the operation heretofore described, a circuit is established for the winding 41, as follows: contacts 60, conductor 82, contacts 83, conductor 84, knife switch 29, winding of magnet 41, conductor 64 to line. The winding 41 now being energized will effect a rotation of the controller 30, thirty degrees, which is effected upon each operation of the switch P, to efi'ect an opening or dumping operation of the small bell. Two more operations of the switch P effects the rotation of the controller sixty degrees, and brings the segmental contact 32 into electrical engagement with the contact 40, and after the switch P is opened (or in order to prevent the simultaneous operation of the power mechanisms X and X) a circuit is established for the winding of the switch P, as follows: conductor 85, knife switch 29, conductor 86, supply contact 39, segmental contact 32 to contact 40, conductor 90, switch 28 to conductors 87 and 88, back contacts 58, winding of switch P, conductor 89, normally closed switch 17, conductor 89', contacts 53, conductor 90, back contacts 58, conductor 77,; t0 line. The main line switch P will now close, thereby establishing circuits for the motor M brake magnet, etc. The brake mechanism will new release and the motor will now operate, the starting resistance 18 being controlled by the accelerating magnet 0'.
It will be pointed out here that in the operation of the large bell, the motor M operating the same is automatically stopped with the bell in open position, this posltion of the bell, corresponding to approximately one half revolution of the gear 7. The bell remains open for a predetermined period of time, which may be varied as desired, and the motor M is again automatically started to close the said bell.
Continuing now with the operation: directly as the gear 7 is rotated, the cam T rotatable therewith permits the switch 17 to close its contacts 55, 55, the former contacts controlling a circuit for the potential switch winding, which circuit includes the contacts of the switch 17 and forms a shunt around the contacts 53 of the self holding magnet 24. The contacts 55' being closed, establish a circuit 'for the winding 24, which will now operate and open contacts 53' and close its contacts 79, which establish a self holding circuit for the winding 24. The circuit for the winding 24 branches from the conductor 87 (included in the circuit for the winding of switch P), at 7, conductor 107, normally closed push button 23, conductor 108, winding 24, conductor 109, contacts 55', and thence by wire 110 to line. The self holding circuit for the winding 24' is the same as just traced up to and through the winding 24, contacts 79, and thence by way of conductor 110 to the line. The circuit traced intially for the winding of the switch P is now open at the contacts 53, but the contacts 55 now maintain' a circuit for the said winding, this circuit it being particularly noted, including in series therewith the contacts associated with the switch 17. -'-Now when the motor M has rotated the gear 7, approximately one: half revolution, corresponding to the open position of the large bell, the cam T actuates'the switch 17, thereby opening the circuit just ointed out'for the winding of the switch P. The latter will now open, causing the motor to be stopped, with the large bell in open position in order to breathe the furnace. The timing element for determining the period through which the large bell shall remain open, is eflected by means of the slow closing electromagnetic switch designated 10 1, this switch havwinding of the switch P, these contactsv forming a shunt around a high resistance 88. Now since this resistance is normally short circuited by the said contacts 58, the winding of switch P will initially receive full current strength, and upon the closing of the said switch, the resistance is inserted, acting then in the capacity of a holding resistance, it allowing sufficient current to pass into the said winding, to keep the said switch closed.
The operation of the timing element in conjunction with the associated controlling.
mechanism will. now be described. Assuming the large bell is now in open position, with the switch P open, a circuit for the winding of the slow closing electromagnet 104 may be traced as follows: This circuit branching from the circuit followed from the tacts 105, conductors 112, 89, contacts 55,
conductor 90, through back contacts 58' on switch P to the line. Now it will be pointed out that the windings of the switches P and 104'81'8 included in the same circuit up to the junction 104", this circuit including the high resistance '88. When the switch P is first closed to start the operationof the large bell from its normal or closed position, the resistance 88 is inserted also in the circuit including the winding of the switch 104, and since the electro-magnet switch 104 is slow acting the same has not sufficient time to close its contacts before the resistance 88 is inserted by the opening of the back contacts 58, and thereupon the initial operation of the large bell hoisting mechanism, the switch 104 will remain inoperative? Continuing now with the operation, the contacts 105, as will be .seen, establish a holding circuit for the winding of the switch 104. The switch P will now close and effect a closing "of the large bell, and the gear 7 upon completing one revolution brings the camT into engagement with the switch 17, thus opening the contacts 55, 55, and effecting the opening of the switch P whose winding, together with the self-hold-' mg circuit for the winding of switch 104:, is contained in the circuit controlled by the contacts '55, which as above stated are now opened. In this manner it will be seen that the motor M will be automatically stopped with the large bell closed. The self holding circuit for the winding of the self holding magnet 2 1 is, however, still maintained, this circuit being broken upon the next operation of the switch P, which will effect an operation of the ratchet magnet 4:1, and thus rotate the segmental contacts 30, disengaging the segmental contact 32" from the contact finger 4:0, and. thereby opening the self-holding circult for the winding 24 at these points.
Continuing now, and assuming the segmental contact 32 and contact 10 are in electrical engagement. Three more dumpingoperations of the small bell elfects a rotation of the segmental ring, 90 degrees, and brings the segmental contact 32, into electrical engagement with the fixed contact 40". The circuit for the winding of the switch P is now closed through these contacts, the latter switch closing, and the remaining elements operating in a manner as heretofore described to effect the automatic operation of the large bell hoisting mecha- 1118111. This sequence of operation between the small and large bell hoisting mechanism continues as'long as the knife switch remains inserted in the contacts forming the square designated 3. I
Now to change this automatic sequence of operation, say for example from 3 to 6, it is necessary that the segmental, contact ring on the electrical distributer be set, to what we will term its starting position, as indicated in the drawing in Pig. 4, this position being readily determined byvthe arrow indicated,
which must be in a vertical position pointing upwardly. The knife switch 28 is now interchanged from the position as now indicated, to the contacts forming the square designated 6. For this sequence of operation the automatic operation of the large bell is controlled (that is in so far as the electrical distributer is concerned), by the segmental contact 32, andthe fixed contact 40".
From the explanation thus far given it will be seen that any desired frequency of the form herein specified may be obtained simply by inserting the knife switch 28 into the desired setsof contacts, and by manually resetting the electrical distributer upon each interchange of the knife switch.
For a frequency of two and four, it is thought not necessary to describe in detail,
' since the particular contacts on the electrical distributer which coact to effect the automatic operation of the large bell hoisting mechanism for each above mentioned sequence, are designated herein.
The operation for permitting an extra charge to be dumped into the large hell by the small bell without disrupting the automatic sequence of operation controlled by the controller 30, follows: Assuming now I the skip has discharged the sixth load into the small bell, the switch 29 is opened before the reversing switch D is closed to effect the starting of the empty skip downwardly. The opening of the switch 29 prevents the operationof the ratchet magnet 41 upon the operation of the switch P, which when closed establishes the circuit for the winding 41 as heretofore described. The segmental contact ring up to this time we will assume has now been rotated one hundred and fifty degrees, and when the empty skip is started, the small bell discharges its load, but the rotation of the segmental contact ring 30 is not' effected, the switch 29 being opened. The extra skip load is now dumped into the small bell, and before the empty skip is started down, that is, before the closing of the proper reversing switch is effected by the operator, the small knife switch is closed. The proper reversing switch is now closed, an automatic operation of the small bell effected, and the circuit for the winding 41 now being established, effects the rotation of the controller thirty degrees, which will bring the segmental contacts 32 and 40" into electrical engagement, and upon the opening of the switch P, a circuitis completed for the winding of the magnet P, which will now close, and thereby effect the operation of the large bell as heretofore described.
The mode of operation for permitting an extra load after every third operation of the small bell without destroying the sequence of operation controlled by the electrical distributer 30 is effected by 0 enin the switch 29 after the third skip loa has umped into the small bell and before the circuit is established to start the empty skip in a down wise operate and disrupt the sequence of operation. A momentary operation of the button 22 closes a circuit for the winding of the switch P, which closes and effects an operation of the small bell hoisting mechanism in the same manner as heretofore de- I scribed. In this operation the electromagnet switch 25 is self-holding as is the magnet 24, as heretofore described, a momentary operation of the button 23 when the hoisting mechanism stops, restoring these magnets to normal position.
For an emergency operation of the large bell hoisting mechanism, the switch 29 may remain closed. A momentary pressure on the button 22 effects an operation of the large bell hoisting mechanism, in the same manner as effected by means of the electrical distributer, but in this instance independently thereof. The magnet 25 is self holding as is the magnet 24', and after a complete operation of the large bell hoisting mechanism, a momentary pressure on the button 23', restores these magnets to normal positions.
Reviewing briefly the various cycles'of operation, it is seen that the operation of the small bell hoisting mechanism is controlled automatically by the skip hoist controlling mechanism; each operation of the small bell effects a rotation of the segmental contact ring, thirty degrees, the segmental ring and its coacting contacts eflecting an automatic operation of the large bell hoisting mechanism, after every 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 6th dumpmg operation of the small bell, as determined by the position of the knife switch 28, it being noted that the large bell is operable automatically only when the switch P is in open position; this feature protecting against a simultaneous opening of the two bells; an extra skip load is permissible, the switch 29 being opened for this operation to prevent disrupting the sequence of. operation as controlled by the electrical distributer; in operating the large bell, the hoisting mechanism therefor is stopped for a period of mes es Patent of the United States 1. of blast furnace charging parts, the combination with a "large and small bell, separate motors'for actuating the bells, a skip, a motor for actuating the skip, electro-magnetic switches controlling the circuits of theskip motor, a source of current supply for the motors, an electromagnetic main line switch dependent on the 1 operation of the first named switches automatically to connect the small bell motor to the source of current supply, an electromagnetic main line switch associated with the large bell motor, a circuit controller controlled automatically by the first named main line switch, said circuit controller arranged automatically to effeet the closing of the second main line switch after a certain predetermined number of op- ,erations of the small bell, and a manually operative switch operable to change the sequence of operation between the small and large bell.
2. In means for controlling the operation of blast furnace charging parts, the combination with .a large and small bell, separate motors for actuatlng the bells, a skip, a motor for actuating the slip, electro-magnetic switches controlling the circuits'of the skip motor, a source of current supply for the an motors, an electromagnetic main line switch dependent -on the operation of the first named switches, automatically to connect the small bell motor to the source of current supply, an electromagnetic main line switch as associated with the large bell motor, a circuit controller controlled automatically by the first named main line switch, said circuit controller arranged automatically to effect the closing of the second main line switch after a certain predetermined number of operations of the small bell, a manually operative switch operable to change the sequence of operation between the small and large "bells, and a manually operative'switch. to
permit of one or more extra operations of the small bell motor without disrupting-the sequence of operation controlled by the circuit controller.
3. In blast furnace charging parts, a small to bell, a motor for actuating the bell, a skip,
a motor for actuating the skip, reversing switches associated with the skip motor, a source of current supply, an electromagnetic main line switch operable upon the closing dash pot switch 104 In order of either of the first named switches to effect the connection of the small bell motor to its source of current supply, and circuit controlling means associated with the motor operable automatically upon the startin of the motor to maintain the main line switch closed and automatically to effect the opening of the main line switch when the opening and closing of the bell is effected.
4. a, motor for actuating the same, a skip or hoist, a motor for actuating the same, electro-magnetic switches controlling the circuits of the skip motor, an electromagnetic main line switch associated with the small bell motor, controlling circuits and mechanism operable upon the closing of any one of the first named switches, automatically to effect the closin' of the main line switch, means automatical y to effect the opening of the switch after a complete operation of the bell, and means to prevent the closing of the main line switch again, until the skip has discharged its load and is again started.
8. In blast furnace charging parts, a small bell, a motor for actuating the bell, a skip, a motor for actuating the skip electromagnetic switches controlling the circuits of the skip motor, a main line switch for controlling the circuits of the bell motor, a
winding therefor, a self holding magnet having contacts normally closed and estalblishinga circuit therethroug-h for the winding, upon the initial closingof the main line switch, the electromagnet adapted to open circuit the winding through the contacts at a predetermined time after the motor starts, means automatically to maintain a closed circuit for the winding upon the starting of the bell motor, said means being arranged automatically to open the circuit of the winding and thereby effect the stopping of the bell motor after a complete operation of y the bell, and means automatically to estabtion of the large bell, until a manual operation of the second name-d manually operatix e means is effected.

In means for controlling the operation of blast furnace charging parts, asmall and large bell, separate power mechanism for actuating the bells, separate controlling circuits and mechanism associated with the power mechanism, and means automatically to control the sequence of operation between the large and small bells, said means comprising a rotatable electrical conductor ring having a plurality of segmental contacts formed integrally therewith and symmetrically spaced a certain predetermined num-' ber of degrees apart, electrically controlled means operable upon each operation of the small bell to eifect the rotation of the electrical conductor ring a certain predetermined distance, an electrical conductor adapted to supply an electric current to the conductor ring, and additional electrical conductors positioned to be engaged 'by the segmental contacts, upon a certain predetermined number of rotations of the electrical conductor ring.

In a blast furnace having large and small bells, automatic means for controlling the sequence of operation there'between, said means comprising a rotatable electrical con- 'ductor ring having segmental contacts formed integrally therewith at certain predetermined distances around the ring, an electromagnet, graduated means controlled thereby operable to effect the rotation of the conductor ring upon each operation of the electromagnet, an electrical supply conductor for the electrical conductor ring, and additional electrical conductors positioned to be engaged by the segmental contacts upon a certain predetermined number of operations of the electromagnets. I

In means for controlling the operation of-blast furnace charging parts, a small and large bell, a motor for actuating the large bell, a source of current supply for the motor, an electromagnetic main line switch associated with the motor, and a circuit controller for the switch operable automati cally to control the sequence of operation between the small bell and the main line switch, said means comprising a plurality of rotatable electrical conductors symmetrically disposed a certain predetermined number of degrees around a central axis, an electrically controlled graduated member operable upon each operation of the small bell to rotate said electrical conductors a certain predetermined number of degrees, an electrical supply conductor common to all of the first named conductors, and additional electrical conductors spaced certain predetermined distances apart, and arranged to be engaged by the rotatable conductors, and
.thereby automatically effect the closing of the main line switch after a certain predegelfinined number of operations of the small 13. In a blast furnace having a large and small bell, automatic means for controlling the sequence of operation therebetween, said means comprising a casing, a removable cover therefor, an electrical conductor ring inside of the frame, the ring having contact segments formed integrally therewith at predetermined distances around the rin a shaft carrying the ring, means for insuIating the ring from the shaft, bearings formed integrally with the frame to support the shaft, an electromagnet and an armature therefor, a ratchet fixed on the shaft, a, pivoted dog co-acting with the ratchet, the dog being operatively connected to the armature through a guiding member which is pivotally connected to said armature, means for adjusting the movements of the armature, an electrical conductor held in fixed position inside of the casing, the conductor adapted permanently to engage the conductor ring, and additional electrical conductors held in fixed position inside of the easing, the conductors being positioned to be engaged by the segmental contacts in a certain predetermined order, and upon a certain predetermined number of operations of the electromagnet.
14. In means for controlling the operation of blast furnace charging parts, the combination with a small bell and a large bell, motive means for the bells, and means comprising a change-over switch for selectively determining the sequence of operation between the small and large bells.
15. In means for controlling the operation of blast furnace charging arts, the combination with a small and a arge bell, motive apnea means for the bells, and selective means comprising a change-over switch and an electrical distributor for controlling the sequence of operation between the bells.

In means for controlling the operation pf blast furnace charging parts, the combination with a small and a large bell, independent motive means for the bells, and selective controlling apparatus comprising a change-over switch and an automatically operated electrical distributer for automatically controlling the sequence of operation between the small and large bell motive means.

In means for controlling the operation 1 of blast furnace charging parts, the combination with a small and a large bell, independent motive means for the bells, controlling apparatus for the motive means, and selective apparatus comprising a changeover switch and an electrical distributer controllable by the small bell controlling apparatus, and interconnected with the arge bell controlling apparatus to control the sequence of. operation between the said motive devices.
18. In means for controlling the operation of blast furnace charging parts, the combination with a small bell and a large bell,
motive means for the bells, and selective apparatus comprising a changeover switch and an automatically operated electrical distributer for automatically effecting the operation of the large bell after a number of operations of the small bell as predetermined by the said selective apparatus.
19. In means for controlling the operation of blast furnace charging parts, the combination with a small bell and a large bell,
