To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Cannons E. Gunner,
:a citizen of the United States, and residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Electric Lamp, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to electric lamps, to the bulb mountings therefor, to the coupiings for the electric circuits, and particular vided with a switch, and its obgect is provide a lamp that can be easily ad3usted, that will be simple in construction, and that will not get out of order with ordinary care. This construction is especially adu tahted for electric headlights and search lig its for launches and automobiles, although the details thereof may be generally employed.
This invention consists, in combination with a novel coupling sleeve and means to hold it. substantially rigidly in position; of a plug extending into one end 0 the sleeve and stationary relative thereto and ltVlIlg one or two contact posts, of a scco d plug extendin into the other end of the sleeve and revo ublc therein and having the same number of conthcts as the first, the contact or contacts of one of the plugs being spr111gpressed toward the other plug, and means to turn the revoluble' )lug within the sleeve so as to engage and isenguge the contacts at will. It also consists in employing u collar on the outside of the coupling sleeve and u. pin extendin through a slot in said sleeve from the co nr into the movable dog to turn it. It further consists in so torming the 'slot in the cou ling sleeve that the movable plug and on] or will be held in either of two predetermined positions. It further consists in a novel focusing device for the lamp bulb, and in the details of construction illustrated in the accompany ng drawings and particularly pointed out m thc claims.

In Fig. 1, the casing 1 of the lamp is v to the quick detachable coupling pro-' shown to receive the lens rin 2: which presses the lens 3 against the poo ing ring 4 carried in a groove in the outer flange 5 of the reflector 6. A handle 7 is formed on the casing and within it is revolubly mounted a screw 8 having a. knob 9 at its outer end. A coupling sleeve 10 is slidable in a cylindrical flange 12 at the rear end of the re flector, which flange has a horizontal slot 13 to receive the bar 14 secured to the sleeve 10, whereby the sleeve is prevented from turning. A lam bulb 15 of any desired type is mounted in I: e front end of the sleeve, while the well known insulatin in 16 is provided with contacts to wfiic li tie wires 17 and 18 are joined by means of the screwslil; Th: rear end 20 of the bar 14 is turned in and threaded to receive the screw 8. A pin 22 may be used to prevent the screw being turnc entirely out of th hole in the end 20. Aspring 23 around the screw 8 acts as a. brake to restrain the screw from turning. It will be seen that this simple mechanism permits the lamp bulb to be perfectly focuscd.
The casing is shown formed with u cylindrical flange 25 within which the coupling sleeve 26 is securely held by means of a circ1 'nferential spring 27 one end of which lies in a notch in the flange 25 and has an inwardly turned lip 28 that extends into n. notch in the coupling sleeve. This spring can easily be removed to release the coupling sleeve.

movement of thepin 38 out of either of these seats is only possible upon application of considerable turning force to the collar 40. When the pin 38 is in the seat at one end of the slot, the posts 34 and 37 will eneasily operated.
In case the casing 1 of the lamp is grounded, only one wire 17 18 is necessary. and therefore one of each of the parts 33, 34, 35, 37 and 42 may be omittec.
A boss of sheet metal maybe secured to or formed on the casing 1 and have a flat circular'end or top 51. A bolt 52 having a nut 53. extends through a hole in the part 51 and through a spring washer 54. a flange 55 on the bracket 56 and a second washer 57. i This construction permits the 1am to be turned on the bolt 52 as a pivot.
The bracket 56 has a secondflange 58-at right angles to the first and through this and through the flange 59 on the support 60 extends a bolt 61 having a nut 62. A sprin washer may also be placed under the hem of this bolt. A jaw 63 on this support may engage the bar 64, a second jaw 65 and bolt 66 completing the enga ement. It will therefore be seen that t e lamp may be swung in a circle about the bolt 61 and iii acircle at right angles to thefirst about; the bolt 5:2, the combination of the two movements permitting the beam of light from the bulb 15 to be thrown in substantially every direction.
Many changes in the details of construction may be made by lampmakers without departing from the spirit of myinvention as expressed in the claims.
