- CHARLES HENRY sravn, or THORNTON, ILLINOIS.
PEBB'LE on BALL Minn.
of Thornton, in the county of Cook and f State of Illinois, have inventeda new and Improved Pebble or Ball Mill, of whichthew following is a description.
My invention relates to a grinding or reducing mill adapted to receive balls or pebbles and mounted to be turned, whereby the material is reduced by the action of the balls or pebbles with the turning of the mill.
The invention more particularly relates to a mill designed to reduce chemicals or other materials to line powder.
The prime object of the invention is to provide a pebble or ball mill in which the drum or cylinder will be disposed with its axis transecting the axis about which the mill turns whereby to eiect increased reducing action by a more frequent and more thorough tumbling of the reducing elements and the material.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a mill embodying my invention;
Fig. 2-is a plan view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section thereof as indicated by the line 3 3, Fig. 2.
In the illustrated example a suitable base 10 is provided having standards 11 provided at the top with bearings 12 on which the trunnions 13 of the mill turn, one of the trunnions having a suitable handle 111 or other means whereby the mill may be turned.
The trunnions are on a frame or holder designated generally by the numeral 15. The drum or cylinder 16 in my improved mill is carried by frame or holder 15, to the ends 15a of which the trunnions are secured. The holder is equipped with means to clamp the'drum 16 in position with its axis transecting the axis of rotation of the holder. In the illustrated example the holder frame 15 is open at the center to receive the cylinder i Specification of Letters Patent'.
holder and at opposite sides thereof, means is provided on the holder frame `proper and its 'clamp' frame 17 to engage and retain the cylinder at its ends. In the illustrated form `a seat 21 extends from the holder 15 at one sidethereof, oblique to the general plane of said holder and has an annular flange 21a in a position to overlap the drum or cylinder and at the opposite end of the holder 15 and at the same side as the seat 21 is a concave seat 22 on which the opposite end of the cylinder rests at a side of the cylinder.
Similarly, there is provided on the clamp frame 17 an oblique seat 23 having a flange 23a and at the opposite end of said frame 17 there is a concave seat 24, said parts 23,k
23a, 24 corresponding with the parts 21, 21 and 22- The loosening of the nuts 19 permits the removal of the clamp frame 17 and Patented Nov. 5, 1918.

with it the seats 23, 24, thereby vpermitting the ready placing or removal of the cylinder when desired. The cylinder is provided with a removable head 25 which is held in position by any suitable means as by a bayonet lock, there being indicated pins 26 on` the cylinder and bayonet slots 27 in the head' 25. Thus, the removal of the clamp frame 17 readil permits of the removal of the head 25 or charging or emptying the cylinder.
It will be seen that with the described construction in the turning of the cylinder about the axis of the holder 15, the material to be reduced and the reducing balls or pebbles will alternately shift from one end of the cylinder toward the other, thereby producing a more effective interchange of the contents of the mill and a more effective grinding impact of the grinding elements.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the mechanical details herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A ball or pebble mill including a support, a holder revolubly mounted in said support, a cylinder disposed in said holder in position at an angle thereto and crossing the axis of revolution of the holder, a clamp on the holder at one side, said holder at one side thereof having seats for said cylinder at opposite ends of the holder, and the said clamp having corresponding seats thereon at its opposite ends.
2. A ball or pebble mill including a revoluble holder7 a cylinder in the holder vdiepoee'd oblique to the axis of revolution of the holder, a. seat extending from the holder at one Side adjacent to an end of the holder and oblique to the axis of revolution of the holder adapted to engage the cylinder at one end, a similar concave seat on the holder at mentioned seat or holder and at the opposite end of the cylinder, a concave seat on the clamp at the Saline side es the rst seat but at the opposite end of the clamp, and Ineens to detaehably secure said clamp in position.
