. new and useful Improvement in Condiment- Holders, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to condiment holders, and more particularly to a container having separate compartments for salt and pepper.

An object of the present invention 1s to provide the holder w1th novel means for selectively opening the compartments one at a time, whlch means lies wholly within the marginal edge or circumference of the container, and may be adjusted by a convenient movement of a finger of the and in which the holder is held for shaking.

The invention further aims at the provision of a two-compartment condlment holder with large and small openings in the top thereof, and the provision of means for mounting a correspondingly apertured disk on the top in a novel manner for shifting the disk laterally in opposite directions by means extendin upwardly from the top for engagement wit the fingers.

A still further object of the present invention is to provide a condiment holder of this nature which may be economically constructed of relatively few sheet metal parts, which is light in weight, and which may be made in large and small sizes.

The above, and various other objects and advanta es of this invention will be in part described, and in part understood, from the followin detailed description of the present preferre embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a condiment holder constructed according to the present invention.

Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken through the same, transversely of the partition therein.

Fig. 4 is a detail top plan view of the cap employed.

Referring to this drawing, 10 designates a receptacle which is preferably made from sheet metal, and which may be of cylindrical form as shown. The upper end of the reeeptacle 10 is reduced slightly in diameter to provide an inwardly ofi'set attaching flange, 11 and an annular exterior shoulder 12 at the base of the flange 11.

The receptacle 10 is divided into two compartments by the provision of a'transverse partition 13, the same being located in any desired part of the receptacle to provide compartments of the required size. The partition 13 extends longitudinally within the receptacle and terminates at its upper edge flush with the upper edge of the flange 11. The upper open end of the receptacle 10 is closed by a cap 14 the marginal depending flange of which overlaps the flange 11 of the receptacle, and is adapted to bind snugly thereon for holding the cap from displacement during the ordinary handling and adjustment of the device. of the cap 14 is adapted to seat, at its inner side, agalnst the upper edge of the artition 13 for closing the compartments in t e recep-v tacle 10 from one another. The body portion of the cap 14 is provided with two sets of openings 15 and 16, the openings 15 being relatively large and registering with one of the compartments in the receptacle, and

the openings 16 being relatively small and registering with the opposite compartment in the receptacle. The cap 14 is also provided, near its marginal edge, and at diametrically opposed points, with radially extending slots 17 Slidably mounted on the upper face of the cap 14 is a disk 18 of a diameter slightly less than that of the cap. The disk 18 is provided with two sets of relatively large and small openings 19 and 20 arranged in slightly diflerent relation from the spacing of the sets of openings 15 and 16 in the cap,

so that when, as shown in Fig. 3, the openings 19 register with the openings 15, the small openings 20 are out of reglster with the small openings 16.

The disk 18 is provided t opposite sides, with inwardly pressed or stamped rojections 21 adapted to engage in the a jacent slots 17 to hold the disk 18 from rotation upon the ca 14, and to guide the disk 18 in a diametrically extending path. The disk 18 is further provided at its marginal edge with a pair of opposed upstanding ears or lugs 22 arranged in vertical planes spaced radially from the vertical planes of the projections 21 to provide therebetween a closure portion 23 adapted to overlie the ad- The body portion I disk are out of registry.

A ring or band 24 encircles the marginal edge of the cap 14, and is provided with an inwardly extending retaining flange25 atits upper edge which overlaps the marginal portion of-the disk 18 to retain the latter against the upper face of the cap 14. The flange 25 is provided at its inner margmal edge, and at o posite sides, with recesses 26 adapted to receive therein the upstanding cars 22, the cars 22 being held from circumferential movement by the opposed marginal edges of the recesses 26. In operation, when the device is adjusted as shown in Fig. 3, the large passages through the cap and the disk 18 are opened and the contents of the ad acent compartment may be dispensed. If it is desired to open the opposite compartment, it is only necessary to engage one or both of the ears 22 and shift the same transversely into an opposite position, carrying with the ears the disk 18. This movement of the disk 18 carries the sets of openings 19 and 15 out of register, and brings the openings 16 and 20 into register to open the relatively small passages through the cap and the disk to the opposite compartment. The disk 18 is held in frictional contact with the flange 25 and the top of the cap 14, and is retained in its opposlte positions of adjustment.

The closure portions 23 of the disk 18 alternately close the opposite slots 17, and open the same through'the disk 18 when brought into register with the apertures formed therein by the striking of the projections 21 inwardly from the disk.

It is of course understood thatvarious changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction of the above specifically-described embodiment of this invention, without departing from the spirit thereof, and being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.

I claim 1. In a condiment holder, the combination,

. of a receptacle having its upper end open,

said receptacle bent inwardly to provide a horizontal shoulder and a slightly constricted portion at the upper open end, a centrally disposed partition within said recep tacle, a cover for said receptacle, having a downturned annular flange engaging the outer surface of said constricted portion and resting upon said shoulder, said cover provided with sets of openings of difi'erent sizes for the compartments, a closure plate slidably mounted upon said cover and provided with sets of openings corresponding to the sets of openings in said cover, a confining flange for said slidable plate having a downturned ring formed thereon, said ring engaging the outer surface of the downturned annular flange and resting upon said shoulder, and u standing operating ears carried by said sli able plate.

In a condiment holder, the combination of a compartment receptacle, a cover for the receptacle rovided with sets of openings of different slzes for the compartments, a disk slidably mounted'upon the cover and provided with corresponding sets of openings, a band fitting about the cover and provideil with an inturned flange adapted to overlap the marginal edge of the disk to retain the latter to the cover, said cover having a radially extending slot near its marginal edge and said disk being provided with an inturned projection adapted for engagement in said slot to confine the movements of the disk in a lateral path, said disk also being provided with an upstanding ear for engagement with the fingers to shift the disk, and said flange having a radially extending recess at its marginal edge adapted to receive andguide said upstanding ear.

In a condiment holder, the combination of a compartment receptacle, a cover for the receptacle provided with sets of openings of different .SlZBS .for the different compartments, a disk slidably mounted on the cover, means for retaining the disk against the cover, said disk being provided with sets of openings of different sizes adapted to register one set at a time, with the openings of the cover, said cover being provided with radially extending slots at its diametrically opposed portion, and said disk being provlded at corresponding points with depend ing projections adapted for engagement in sald slots to limit the movements of the disk to a transverse path, said disk providing slot closure portions outwardly of said projections adapted to close the slots in the cover when the projections are moved alternately inwardly toward the central axis of the receptac le, and said disk being provided with a pair of upstanding cars at opposite sides and at its marginal edge in outwardly spaced relation from said projection for shifting the disk.
