fxa w/Wi w UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS P. LAFFRAY, OF AMSTERDAM, NEW YORK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,317, dated June 25, 1872.
Specification describing anew andlmproved Thread Guard and Gutter for Spools, invented by LEWIS P. LAFFRAY, of Amsterdam, county of Montgomery, State of New York.
My invention consists of a smallfiat plate of metal, or other suitable material, provided with points or-tacks to fasten on the end of a common thread-spool readily, which said plate has a notch near the periphery of the spool, and a clip on its side so arranged that the end of the thread may be confined readily, and held so as not to unwind in the work-basket or when rolling on the floor, and so that the device may be used for breaking or cutting the thread.
The drawing is a perspective view of a spool with my improved guard attached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is a small thin plate of metal of any suitable form, and adapted to be fastened on the end of the spool by points a at the ends or sides, adapted to be driven into the ends of the spool by light blows, and to hold the said plate thereon while the thread is being used, which said plate has a kind of cutting-notch, B, at one edge, near the periphery of the spoolhead, and a clip, 0, behind the said notch, ar-
ranged in such manner that the thread being first drawn across the edge of the notch and then around the clip 0, in the manner shown, or in any equivalent way, will be confined in said notch and between the clip and the plate, which are so shaped that the thread willwedge in snugly and be thereby secured against unwinding and waste.
These devices also hold the thread so that it can be broken off when wanted for use by pulling it, when confined by them, much more readily than it can be broken in the ordinary way.
This device will save much annoyance and vexation, caused by the unwinding and wasting'of the threads of several spools in a box together as they are moved and shaken about.
Havingthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I As a new article of manufacture an attachment for spools, consisting of, a plate, A, with points for fastening to the spool, and a notch, B, and clip 0, all as shown and'described.
