BRIQUET-IVIAKING MACHINE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK E. BERLIN, acitizen of the United States of America, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of VV-ashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Briquet-Making Machines, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to a machine which des' d for the manufacture of bricks or bring ts of coal or other material. This macnine has plungers which compress the brie 'uet or brick from both sides.
My invention consists of a vertically rotatable member having two sets of radially reciprocating plungers in line with each other and actuated by cams. In an annular cavity or ring between the plungers is a hopper which feeds the properly miXed'material to the dies. A sleeve actuated by a cam, with a section removed so as to form a scoop, picks up the material from said hooper or cavity. The material partly falls into the die below and at a certain: point the inner plunger operated by a cam, pushes the rest of the material into the die. The inner and outer plungers then compress the material from both ends. After the material is compressed the inner plunger and sleeve recede and the outer plunger pushes the finished product into the annular ring or cavity between the inner and outer plungers where it falls on a conveyor or trough leading away from the machine. The sleeve then ri es by means of a cam and thus the operation is repeated.

In a detail description in which like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views, the circular member 10 is rotatably mounted on a shaft- 11, and inclosed in a frame 12 divided into two parts 12 and 12 The parts 12 and 12 are hinged together at a point 13 and diametrically connected by a bolt 14, encircled by a coil spring 15 having a bearing between the shoulder 16 and the washer 17.

side of the frame 12 is an annular cam 21. Attached to the frame by the supports 22 is an annular guide 23. Fastened on the shaft 11 and adjacent to the cam 24 is a guide 25. Extending outwardly beyond the cam 24" and fastened to shaft 11 is a cam 26, and adjacent thereto is a guide 27. The guide 27 is fastened to cam 26 by supports The member 10 has cylindrical projections 43 which are bored out to. form dies 28 and in which are placed reciprocating plungers 29, hollowed out as at 30. The cylindrical projections 43 have a slot in which the cam 21 works. At the outer end of the plungers 29 are rollers 31 which bear against cam 21. A stud 32 which is free to reciprocate in slot and fastened to plunger 29 carries a roller 33 which bears against guide 23 and keeps plunger 29 in contact. with cam 21 at all times. In the inner part of member 10 are cylindrical bores 34 in line with the die 28 in which are mounted sleeves 35. Sleeves 35 are operated by the studs 36, which slide in slots 44 and carry rollers 37 which work between the cam 26 and guide 27. A section is removed in the outer end of sleeve 35 so as to form a scoop. In the sleeves 35 are plungers 38 which have a stud 39, which slides in slot 45, attached thereto and carries the rollers 40 and 41. The plunger 38 is operated by a cam 24 and the guide 25 engages roller 40. The shaft 11, cams 21 24 and 26, and guides 23, 25 and 27 remain stationary while the member 10 carrying said plungers, sleeves and rollers, are rotated by means of power co veyed thereto throu h a rear 46 attached as at 47 or in any other suitable manner. A hopper 48 leads to a cavity 49 into which the suitably prepared material is fed. A troiugh 50 leads from the annular cavity 51 and which carries away the finished product.
In the practical operation of the machine the rotatable portion is set in motion in the direction of the arrows.
The material is fed into the hopper 48 from which. it passes into the cavity 49. The projection 53 of the sleeve 35 which is moved radially outward by the cam 26, picks up the 105 material in passing the cavity 49 and the material partly falls into the die 28 below. The inner plunger 38 operated by cam 24, pushes the remaining material from the sleeve 35 into the die 28 at points 54 to 55. The outer plunger 29 and the inner plunger 38 by the action of cams 21 and 24 compress the material from both ends at points 55 to 56. The inner plungers 38 and the sleeve 35 recede and the outer plunger 29 forces the finished product 57 into the annular cavity) 51, from which it is conveyed by gravity onto a trough or conveyer 50 leading away from the machine. The spring 15 is to prevent excessive strains on the machine in case of the overloading of the molds.
What is claimed is 1. A briquet making machine comprising a vertically mounted rotatable member carrying two sets of radially reciprocatingplungers in line with each other, an annular cavity or ring between the plungers, a hop per in said cavity or ring, sleeves with extensions mounted over the inner set of plungers, such extensions adapted to reach into said annular cavity or ring, dies formed in the outer portion of said rotatable member, and stationary cams and guides as means for actuating said plungers and sleeves to feed the briquet mixture to said dies, compress the same and to discharge the same into said annular cavity or ring.

A briquet making machine comprising a vertically mounted rotatable member carrying two sets of radially reciprocating plungers in line with each other, an annular cavity or ring between the plungers, a hopper in said cavity or ring, sleeves with extensions mounted over the inner set of plungers, such extensions adapted to reach into said annular cavity or ring, dies formed in the outer portion of said rotatable member, and
tationary cams and guides as means for actuating sald plungers and sleeves to feed the briquet mixture to said dies, compress:
the same and to discharge the same into said annular cavity or ring, together with a conveyer or trough reaching into said annular cavity or ring to carry away the finished product or briquets.

A briquet making machine comprising a vertically mounted rotatable member carrying two sets of radially reciprocating plungers in line with each other, an annular cavity or ring between the plungers, a hopper in said cavity or ring, sleeves with extensions mounted over the inner set of plungers, such extensions adapted to reach into said annular cavity or ring, dies formed in the outer portion of said rotatable member, and stationary cams and guides as means for actuating said plungers and sleeves to feed the briquet mixture to said dies, compress the same and to discharge the same into said annular cavity or ring, together with a conveyer or trough reaching into said annular cavity or ring to carry away the finished product or briquets, and means to prevent excessive strains on the machine in case of the overloading of the dies or molds.
