To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMOND ARMSTRONG,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Island, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Antiskid Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an anti-skid device and has special reference to motor driven vehicles (Inc object of this invention is the production of an anti-skid device which includes a source of sand supply, whereby sand may be dispensed in front of the driving wheels of amotor vehicle for preventing the same from skidding or slipping, by the passing of sand in the path' of movement thereof.
Another object of this invention is the production of an anti-skid device wherein a pair of slides are connected to the sand reservoir, while operating means is connected to a foot lever, so that the chauffeur of the motor driven vehicle may swing the lever to shift the slide and thus permit sand to be dispensed in the path of movement of the rear or driving wheels of the vehicle.
Broadly stated, the invention consists of a reservoir which has a curved bottom to cause the sand therein to pass toward its ends, slides carried by guides adjacent the ends of the reservoir, boxes connected to the guides pipes extending from said boxes, whereby when said slides are moved, sand may pass from the reservoir through the slides and boxes and then into the pipes to be discharged in the path of movement of the rear wheels of the vehicle, rods connected to said slides, a plate connected to said rods, an operating. lever having a rod connected thereto and to said late, whereby when the lever is shifted, said slides may be actuated.
One practical form of construction and asinvention will be hereinafter described and is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the antiskid device, a portion of the same being broken away and the reservoir being shown in section.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the reservoir, illustrating the manner in which the actuating rods are connected to the plates.

In the preferred embodiment of the present invention about to be described, it will be seen that 5 indicates in general the floor of the motor vehicle which has a slot 6 adjacent its forward end, while. a depending bracket 7 is connected to the body and is contiguous to the slot 6. i
The reservoir 8 is elongated and of course may be of any desired size and contain any amount of sand preferred or necessary. The bottom 9 of the tank 8 is curved throughout its entire length, it being noted that the center of the bottom 9 is highest although the bottom extends downwardly toward its end, having flat end portions 10. These end portions 10 are provided with openings 11 shown in Fig. 3, for purposes to be hereinafter set forth. The top 12 is substantially round, as shown in F1g.'1. The neck 13 extends from the top 12 and projects through the floorlng 5 of the vehicle, whereby the reservoir may be filled through this neck. A closure cap 14 is removably carried by the neck 13 and it is obviou that if desired, the cap'mag be removed for-allowing the tank to be lled, although under ordinary conditions, the cap is carried-by the neck,.as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The retaining straps 15 extend ,around the tank and have flat portions 16 conforming to the shape of the bottom 9 of perspective view of one the reservoir and it will further. be noted that these straps 15 have outwardly extending feet 17 whichare secured in any desired manner to the flooring 5 of the vehicle, thus 7 supporting-the reservoir in a set position.

A box 24 is fixed upon each pair of guide straps 18, as shown in Fig. 3 and these boxes 2 1 have openings 25 in their whereby the sand may pass into The dispensing tubes 26 are fixedly carried by the lower portions of the boxes 24.- and are curved to extend to a point adjacent the peripheries of the rear wheels as shown in Fig. 1. It is therefore obvious that as sand passes through the boxes 2 1, it will pass through the tubes 26 and be finally dispensed in the path of movement of the rear wheels.
The rods 27 are connected to the forward end of the slide plates 19 by having eyes 28 extending through openings 29 formed in These rods 27 converge forwardly and are permanently secured in any desired manner to a central plate 30. A rod3-1 is connected to the forward portions'of the plate 30 and this rod 31 has a coupling sleeve 32 screwed into engagement therewith. .The foot lever 33 is pivotally mounted upon the bracket and the coupling sleeve 32 is pivotally mounted as indicated at 34 upon this foot lever. In anti-skid devices now generally used, the structures are secured over tires. Therefore, as is well known, these anti-skid structures wear the tires out very quickly and for this reason are injurious to the same. However, the present invention does not unduly wear upon the tires but merely provides a which will prevent slipping or skidding of the tires and the present invention will be as readyv for use during warm weather, when the pavements are wet and for this reason are slippery, as during the winter when the same are slippery due to ice or snow.

When a desired set of openings register with the openings 11 in the end portion 10 it is obvious the sand will pass from the reservoir through the tubes to be dispensed inthe path of movement of the driving wheels. When the lever is engaged with a selected notch in the plate 35, it is obvious the flow of sand will continue. until the lever is released. When pressure upon the lever is released, the tension of the coil springs 32 will draw the plates to their normal positions, thus moving the openings 20 out of registry with the openings 11 in the end portions 10 of the bottom 9 of the reservoir 8. Rearward movement of these plates also moves the rods 27 rearwardly and also moves the plate 30 and rod 31 rearwardly, whereby the operating rod will be moved to its normal position, as indicated in Fig. 1. As above suggested, the device will be in condition for instant use at any time and under any conditions and the sand may be allowed to flow as long as desired. It will be noted that the concaved construction of the bottom 9 of this tank 8 causes the sand in this reservoir to move toward the ends of the reservoir.
' The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred, or approved, form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a support, a reservoir carri by said support and havin an opening, a slide plate connected to said reservoir an having various sized openings formed therethrough, an operating lever movably mounted upon said support, means connecting said operating lever to said slide plate, whereby as said lever is moved said plate will be shifted, and" means associated with said lever for indicating proper movement of said lever to bring a desiredopening of said plate into registry with the opening of said reservoir, and said last mentioned means being adapted to releasably hold said lever in a set position.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a support, a reservoir carrie by said support, and having an opening, a slide plate .mounted upon said reservoir, sai plate having various sized openings, a lever pivotally mounted upon said support, means connecting said lever to said slide plate, whereby as said lever is moved, said slide plate will be shifted, a plate carried by said and having notches formed therein to correspond with the openings iormed in said first mentioned plate, whereby said lever may be moved to a desired notch for bringing the desired opening of said plate into registry with the opening of said reservoir, and said lever being adapted to beseeceived by the selectednatch, to be held against accidental movement.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a reservoir, having a curved bottom which extends downwardly toward its ends and terminates in fiat end portions provided with openings guide tracks carried by said flat end portions adjacent said openings, perforated slide plates carried by said tracks, boxes fixed upon said tracks and having openings formed therein, dispensing tubes connected to' said *boxes, whereby as said slide plates are moved, the contents of the reservoir may pass through the openings in the flat end portions and said slide plates intosaid boxes to be finally dispensed through said tubes.
