KnHoE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Toledo, Lucas county, Ohio, have invented new and useful Motor-Vehicle Hoods, of which the following is a specificaparticularly to motor vehicle hoods and means for hinging the parts of the hood together.
One object of this invention is to provide a central hood hinge which may be constructed with the use of less material than is now commonly used, so that hoods equipped with this hinge member may be more economically produced. Anoth r object of my invention is to provide a central hood hinge which presents a substantially continuous upper surface exposed to the weather so as to make the hood more attractive in appearance, and so as to shed water from the hinge and prevent its penetrating through the hinge joint to the interior of the hood so as to interfere with the operation of the hinge or the motor.

' The vehicle 1 having the top members 2 and 3, the upper edges of which are hingedly connected together at the centerof the hood. The member 2 is p:ovided at its central edge with a cylindrical bead 4 which forms the outer seat for the half round bead 5, which is in tegrally formed on the central abutting edge of the other hood section 3. The bead 4 is provided with a plurality of spaced notches or recesses 7, which may extend from the free edge of the bead to about the center thereof or any desired. distance from said free edge, and the hood section 3 has a plurality of curved tongues 6 which extend or project from the free edge of the bead 5 and are rolled to form a substantially cylindrical is provided with the hood bead corresponding to the bead 4. These tongues 6 are so placed apart as to aline with the recesses 7 so that when the hood sections are assembled, the half round bead 5 fits within and is embraced by the bead 4 on hood section2, while the tongues 6 fit within the notches 7 to prevent a lateral shifting of the h'oodsections relative to each other. Locking pivot pins 8, having enlarged ends 9 for anchoring the hood in position over the motor, are inserted within the cylindrical bead formed by the curved tongues 6 and extend past the tongues 6 to within the bead 4.
This construction provides a central hood hinge-having a substantially continuous and unbroken surface of an attractive appearance and in which the working parts of the hinge are not exposed, and which will shed water and prevent its penetrating through the hinge joint to the interior of'the motor or .corroding the parts of the hinge so as to interfere with their operation.
I am aware that the embodiment of my invention here shown and described is susceptible of considerable variation without departing from the spirit thereof, and therefore I desire to claim the. same broadly, as indicated by the appended claims. -I' have found, however, that this particular embodiment is desirable from many standpoints and, therefore, I wish to claim the same specifically as well as broadly.
What is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination in a motor vehicle hood of a pair of hood sections, one of said sections ,being provided with an integral substantially cylindrical bead formed along one edge thereof, said bead being provided with a plurality of spaced notches therem, the other of said hood sections being provided wit a continuous half round bead formed along the abutting edge thereof, and having a pluralityof curved tongues in line with said notches and rolled upon themselves to form cylindrical beads, and locking pins extending through the beads, formed by sald curved tongues into'the cylindrical bead on the first mentioned hoo section.
2. In a motor vehiclehood, the combination of hood sections provided with a cylindrical bead on one of said sections, and a therefrom and coacting with said cylindrical bead to prevent lateral shifting of the hood sections and a pintle disposed in said cylindrieal bead and embraced by said curved tongues.
3. The combination of a pair of housing members to be hinged together, one of said members having a, substantially cylindrical integral bead extending along one edge thereof and provided with a notch extending from the free edge of said bead toward the center thereof, the other of said menibers having a half round bead nested in and enibraced by said first mentioned bead and pr0- vided With a tongue rolled upon itself to form a substantially cylindrical bead, and disposed. in said notch, and a pintle en1- braced by said first mentioned cylindrical bead and said tongne. v
4. In a motor vehicle hood, the combinatron of a pair of hood sections to be hinged together, the abutting edges of each hood section being formed with a continuous integral bead, one of said beads being nested within the other, and the abutting edges of each hood section being provided with engaging means to prevent lateral shifting of said hood sections relative to each other; and a poetic embraced by and engaging each of said beads.
5. In a motor vehicle hood, the combination of a pa r ofhood sections to be hinged together, each hood section being provided. with a continuous integral bead on one edge thereof, the beads on said hood setions being nested. one within the other, and said beads being' provided with tongues and re cesses respectively, cooperating to prevent lateral shifting of said hood sections relative to each other; and a pint-lo embraced by and engaging each oi said heads.
6. In a motor vehicle, the combination With a body of a. pintle carried thereby; and a hood, including a pair of hood sections, each provided with a continuous integral bead formed on one edge thereof, said beads being nested one Within the other, and each hood section being provided with engaging means to prevent lateral shifting thereof, said pintle being embraced by and engaging each of said beads.
