Yo all whom z't may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE M.. MURRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Stove-Lid and Draft Means; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved stove lid and draft means carried thereby, and an object ofthe invention is to provide a device of this kind, in which the stove lid is provided with a downwardly projecting draft tube, rdesigned to extend substantially to the grate bars and b elow the lire bed, whereby a draft may be created through said tube and the fire bed and the outlet iiue, instead of through the ash pit.
A further object of the invention is to provide a stove lid havingba guide for the reception of a slide'where y the tube may be covered or closed, for cutting 0E the said draft.
in practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth shown in the drawings and claimed.-
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a conventional' form of cooking stove, showing proved stove lid applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2 2 of the imgig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view on line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. e is a sectional View throu h a stove lid, showin the draft tube provided with an adjustab e section.
Referring more especially to the drawings 1 designates the top plate of a conventional form of cooking stove, and which is provided with the usual stove openings 2 and 3, which-are closed by the lids 4 and 5. Each of the lids 4 is provided with an elongated depression 6 acting as a ide. Depending downwardly from each li 4- and at one en of its depression is a draft tube 7, which has its lower end in close osition to the grate bars 8 of the re box In fact the down draft tube 7 is eccentric to the center of the lid, whereby the lid may be rotated to different positions, so that the down draft tube may be positioned at dilierent locations in the fire bed. For instance if the tire is somewhat dead at the end of the lire box or in the center, or to the sides, the down draft tube may be positioned accordingly, by turning the lid. It is to be observed that there are two lids illustrated, and it is obvious that either one of the lids may be rotated to position the tubes 7 Vaccordingly if either or both ends of the lire is dead. It is further obvious that if the center and one end or the other of the fire is dead, the down draft tubes may be positioned accordingly, by rotating and ositioning the respective lid accordingly. here is suiicient room or clearance allowance between the grate bars and the lower extremity of the draft tube, to permit the grate bars to be rattled, when shaking the re bed. The upper end ofthe tube 7 opensthrough the lid 4 at one end of said depression. A suitable slide 10, which is elongated, is mounted and guided in said depression 6, and designed to cover said draft tube. This slide has a finger member 11 whereby the slide may be operated. By opening theslide 10 a draft may be created downwardly through the tube 7 and through the fire bed as indicated by the arrows 12, and up through the outlet flue 13, instead of creating the draft throu h the ash pit. The draft tube 7 is purpose y provided to insure a direct and vertical draft through the top lid of the stove directly over the `lire pot to a point close to the bottom of the re bed, so that the draft will act ,-in-
stantaneously and directly upon the fire, and.
this construction, to ether with the means for controlling the' raft, ma be added to all coal ran es now in use. This may be accomplished y simply sup lying new lids to the stove lid openings a ove the fire box of all styles of coal ranges, either old or new. Furthermore, the` lids may be cast and with the tubes. The depressions in the lids for the reception of the controlling dampers ma be formed at the time of `casting. Te escopin into the tube 7 is a tube section 7 which is provided with a plurality of diametrically o posed apertures?. Extending transverse y of the tube 7 is a head pin or bolt 7, which may be arranged in certain of said diametrically opposed apertures 7b, in order to hold the tube section 7 in different adjusted positions in the tube 7, whereby a draft tube may be provided that can be used in connection with dilerent depths of fire or grate bars. Furthermore the tube section 7 may be adjusted to reguate the draft with relation to the bed of the The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. The combination with a cook stove having its top plate provided with a stove lid opening, of a tire box directly below said opening, a stove lid engaging said opening, said lid having an eccentrically arranged opening, a cylindrical tube depending vertically from the marginal edge of the opening in the lid, and terminating adjacent the bottom of the lire box, said tube having its outlet end opening downward directl and axially with and below the opening 1n the lid and adjacent the bottom of the fire box, whereby a downward draft may be carried to the bottom of the tire bed, so that the draft may pass upwardly through either side of the fire bed, said lid having guides, and means adjustable in the guides for controlling the draft downwardly through the upper end of the tube, said tube vcomprising a stationary section'and a telescopic section, the former telescopically receiving the latter,
a pin detachably engaging the former section, the latter section havin a plurality of diametrically oppositelv disposed apertures, any opposite two of which are adaptyed to receive said pin for holding the lating its top plate provided with a stove lidi opening, of a fire box directly below said opening, a stove lid engaging said opening, said lid having an eceentrically arranged opening, a cylindrical tube depending vertically from the marginal edge of the opening in the lid, and terminating adjacent the bottom of the fire box, said tube having its outlet end opening downwardly directly and axially with and below the opening in the lid and adjacent the bottom of the fire box, whereby a downward draft may be carried to the bottom of the tire bed, so that the draft may pass upwardly through either side of the tire bed, said lid having guides, a-nd means adjustable in the guides for controlling the draft downwardly through the upper end of the tube.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE M. MURRAY.
