Description
R. ODENATH.-
Improvement in Car-Pushing Device.
Nd.128,165. PatentedJunel8J872. F/a/ UNITED STATES RICHARD ODENATH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
' IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-PUSHING DEVICES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,165, dated June 18, 1872.
Specification describing a Car-Pushing Device, invented by RICHARD ODENATH, of the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania.
Oar-Pushing Device.
My invention consists of a device, too fully explained hereafter to need preliminary description, for pushing railroad cars from one point to another at railroad depots, coal-yards, &c.
Figure 1 is a side view of part of a railroad car with my device for moving the same; Fig. 2, a plan view of Fig. 1.
A is part of a railroad car, to the bumperbeam B of which an adjustable clamp, D, is secured by a screw, E; and to a lip, a, on this clamp is so hinged a link, G, that it can be freely vibrated horizontally and to the linkis hinged the operating-arm H, to which is jointed the upper endof the pawl I, the lower end of the latter being adapted to the teeth of the rack J, which is secured to the track near one of the rails, and this rack is embraced by a dog, 61, which is hinged to the pawl I, and which serves to maintain the lower edge of the pawl in a proper lateral position in respect-to the rack.
Combined operating arms and pawls have heretofore been used for moving cars to and fro on the track 5 but considerable difficulty has been experienced in inducing the pawl to take a proper hold on the ground.-a difficulty which I obviate by means of the rack J, in a manner readily understood without explana; tion.
In moving a car from a curved to a straight portion of the track the operating-arm and pawl will accommodate themselves to the change in the position of the car, owing to the intervention of the link Gr between the operating-arm and clamp, this link permitting the free lateral movement of the said arm.
I claim as my invention- 1. A car-pusher, in which are combined the operatingarm H, pawl I and its dog d, and the rack adapted to the track, as set forth.
2. The combination of the above with the link Gr, hung so as to vibrate horizontally, and clamp D.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RICHARD ODENATH.
