OPERATING DEVICE FOR WASHING-MACHIN ES.
Application filed January 27, 1916.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, LoUIs E. DIETZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Operating Devices for IVashing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to the operating mechanism of washing machines and especially to that class known as the double reciprocating rubber type.
Modern washing' machines must operate at high speed and 'produce a maximum amount of power through the use of a minimum amount of exertion or operating force, and they must also operate uniformly, smoothly7 and easily, with little friction of the operating parts.
The object of my present invention is to combine elements and parts which make up the operating mechanism, in a unique, simple and efficient combination which will involve these objects and desired results iny the highest degree, thereby evolving an ideal Washing machine of the type mentioned.
In the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification:
Figure 1, is a side View of the invention,
Fig. 2, is a sectional view on line 2 2 o1' Fig. 3,
Fig. 3, is a plan view of the invention, and
Fig. 4, is an end view thereof.
My invention as illustrated in the drawings, is mounted upon a double rubber type of washing machine 1, in which I mount an oscillating clothes receptacle 2, and a dasher 3, which are adapted to reciprocate simultaneously in opposite directions to rub clothing between them. On the body 1l, of the machine, I hinge at 5, a lid 6 having an elongated slot 7. The clothes receptacle 2 is pivotally mounted in the body 4, and is preferably detachably connected thereto and to the operating mechanism. The dasher-3 is pivotally and slidably mountedV in detachable bearings in the lid or cover 6 and is carried thereby, so that when the lid is open, the dasher is withdrawn from its position within the clothes receptacle, to permit free access thereto.
Upon the hinged end of the lid 6, I rigidly secure a bracket 8, having supports 9 in which is mounted a gear shaft 10 which carries at its outer end a pinion gear 12 and a Specificatonof Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15, 1918.
Serial No. 74,719.
fly wheel 13, which fly wheel gives increased momentum in the operation of the machine.
In brackets 14, I mount another gear shaft 15, which carries the large gear 16, and in brackets 17 I mount the oscillating shaft 18, which carries at its outer end, a downwardly extending arm 19, and to this arm I pivotally attach one end of a link 20, which at its ing rod 241 which passes through the slot 7 and at its lower end is connected to the dasher 3. On the arm 22, I provide a short extension 25 to which is pivoted the upper end of a pitman 26, the other end whereof is connected to J@he clothes receptacle 2.
To the side of the lid 6, at point 27, I pivotally connect a handle 28, to which I piv` otally connect one end of the connecting bar 21 and then pivotally connect thel other end of said bar 21 to the large gear 16, at point 29. The dasher 8 and clothes carrying re` ceptacle'2, are each provided with clothes rubbing surfaces of any desired form.
When it is desired to operate the machine, the lid is opened and the clothes to be washed placed in the machine; the lid is then closed and secured and the handle 28 operated back and forth. By operating the handle 28 back and forth, the connecting rod is pushed forward and backward revolving gear 16 to which it is connected, forcing a mesh with gear 12, thus imparting motion to the shaft 10 and consequently revolving the Hy wheel 13; this operation of the handle also forces the connecting bar 21 to impart movement and motion to link 20 which in turn operates arm 19 and said arm being on oscillating shaft 18 oscillates the same, and this motion also oscillates the arm 22 and its extension 25, thus arm 22 operates the pitman 23 forward and backward and through this action of said pitman a reciprocating motion is given to the dasher 3 by agency ofl05 provide a cheap,
is attached and said arm oscillating with the shaft 18, a simultaneous but oppositely reciprocating motion and action is given to the dasher and clothes carrying receptacle, causing them to produce the proper rubbing and agitating effect upon the clothing to be washed, which have been placed in said clothes receptacle and beneath the dasher or rubber.
It will be understood that the oscillating shaft 18 and its extending arms are continu-v ously operating and oscillating thusthe continuous rubbing of the clothes is progressing as the dasher and clothes carryingreceptacle are simultaneously reciprocating, but in opposite directions.
By placing a belt over the fly wheel 13, power may be applied to operate the machine and in this case, the upper end of handle 28 is dispensed with.
I do not limit myselfl to the specific form of clothes cleaning or agitating mechanism in the tub, but may change.
It will readily become apparent that I simple and highly efficient operating mechanism for washing machines which produces a maximum speed and power at minimum exerting force, and which `is durable and fixed, insuring uniformity of action and operation.
While I have described one specific form of applying my invention, it is obvious that the same mal be somewhat modified without departure from the spirit and principle of the invention and I wish to be understood as claiming that such modifications will still fall Within the scope of my invention.
What I claim as new and my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is t 1. In operating mechanism of the class de- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, y'ny addressing the scribed, a dasher rod and a pitman, an oscillating shaft and outer and inner arms thereon, intermediate connections between the inner arm on the oscillating shaft and the dasher rod and pitman, a large gear and a fly wheel, a small gear, a shaft, the small gear and fly Wheel both mounted on said shaft, said large gear meshing with the small gear so as to revolve the shaft and fly Wheel, a handle lever, a connecting rod between the large gear Wheel and handle lev'er and a link between the handle lever and the outer arm, the operation of the handle lever imparting motion to the parts to operate the fly wheel and oscillate the oscillating shaft and connections so as to reciprocate the dasher rod and pitman. y
2. In operating mechanism of the class described, a dasher rod and a pitman, a shaft, a pinion, a fly wheel, both mounted on said shaft, a large gear wheel and a shaft for carrying the same, an oscillating shaft having inner extensions and an outer extension thereon, said inner extensions connected to the dasher rod and pitman, a handle lever, a connecting rod extending from the handle lever tothe large gear wheel, a link extending from the connecting rod to the outer extension on the oscillating shaft, the movement of the handle lever imparting motion to the parts to operate the flyv wheel and oscillate the oscillating shaft and connections to reciprocate the dasher rod and pitman.
