Be it known that I, PAUL E. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Abercrombie, in the county of Richland and State of North Dakota, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Attachments for Breastpins and the like, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to pins and other articles for personal adornment, and particularly to breast pins and the like, my object being the provision of simple, inexpensive and positively acting means in connection with the securing pins of articles of this nature, whereby to act as a guard and prevent accidental displacement and loss.

More particularly, my invention aims at a guard for pins of the general nature above, which will be brought into action automatically, and without effort on the part of the operator when the breast pin is attached, but which will require disengagement before the breast pin or the like can be removed.

In.the accompanying drawing illustrating my present invention, and forming a part of this specification:

Referring now to these figures, I have shown a breast pin, the body of which is generally indicated at 10 having upon its reverse side a pivot supporting bracket 11, and a keeper 12 diametrically opposed with respect to one another, it being observed that in so far as my present improvements are concerned, the body 10 may be of any suitable construction or design.

The catch pin 13, sharpened as at 14 at one end, is provided at its opposite end with an enlarged flattened shank 15 connected by a pivot pin 16 to the bracket 11, and which shank is in accordance with my invention provided with a safety bar 17. This bar, as seen in Fig. 1, may be integral with the shank 15 and in any case extends therefrom substantially parallel with the pin 13 for the major portion of the length of the latter,

the said safety bar being relatively thin and comparatively flexible so as to adapt the same to flexing movements toward and away from the pin 13 in use, and being approximately straight for practically its entire length. At its free end, however, the safety bar 17 has a curved extremity 18 bent toward the pin 13 so as to bear in one direction upon the cloth or goods B through which the pin 13 may be extended, as seen in Fig. 2, causing the bar 17 to yield away from the pin 13 as the latter is pushed inwardly to complete the fastening to the position shown in Fig. 3, its locked end being, however, in position to instantly engage upon retractive movement of pin 13.

It will be observed, however, that when the free sharpened end 14 of the pin 13 is pressed inwardly toward the body 10 to engage the keeper 12, the safety bar 17 will be pressed against the body in its bent extremity 18 forced through the material or goods B, so that it will thereafter operate to prevent accidental withdrawal of the pin 13 and displacement and loss of the article.

It is obvious that in removing the pin it is simply necessary to withdraw the curved end 18 of the safety bar, holding the same away from the goods or material B as the pin 13 is Withdrawn after freeing the latter from the keeper 12.

My invention will thus be understood as a simple economical attachment for the purposes above stated, which will be strong, and durable in use and uniformly effective in its action.

If so desired, bar 17 may have a small projection adjacent its free end as seen at 17 in Fig. 3 for engagement by the finger or finger nail to more readily release the same when it is desired to remove the breast pin.

I claim 1. An article of the character described consisting of a body having a pivot support and a keeper, and a catch pin pivoted to the support at one end and the opposite end of which is engageable with the keeper, and a safety bar movable with the catch pin and extending therealong for the major portion of its length in spaced relation, said safety bar having a relatively short curved free end bent toward and against the catch pin and sharpened for the purpose described. 2.
