To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES J; Lawmm, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Graduating Bath-Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certa1n new and useful improvements in graduating bath valves of that type in which a single lever is utilized to control the fiow of both hot and cold water whereby the water is entirely cut off in one position of the lever, the cold water is allowed to flow in another position of the lever, both hot and cold water are allowed to: flow at the same time when the lever is in a further position, and hot Water only is allowed to flow when the lever is in a still further position.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of a valve of the above type which shall be extremely simple in construction but exceedingly durable in use, provision being made forthe ready renewal of the parts such as washers and packing.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a novel and effective means operated by a single lever to open the valves of both thehot and cold water pipes, such means being in the form of a cam disk.
A still furtherobject of the invention is the provision of valves for the device which are normally seated by springs, the stems of the valves and one end of each spring being suitably received within caps which are recessed and detachably secured to the main casting of the device.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a serviceable front dial plate formed in one piece and secured to the main casting of the device so as to insure against leakage.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of novel and effective means for guiding the valves and for securing the washers of the valves in position, the construction being such as to prevent loosening of parts-and thereby preventing vibration of the same.
With these general objects in View and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in he novel form, combination and arrange ent of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and then claimed.

Referring more in detail to .the several views, the device broadly consists of" a casting 5 having an integral side nipple 6 which is internally screw-threaded and adapted for connection to a hot water supply-pipe not shown. A similar nipple 7 is provided opposite the nipple 6 for connection to a cold water supply pipe, while a lower outlet nipple 8 is also provided to receive a suitable nozzle as is customary in these devices. A .further similar outlet nipple 9 is provided at the upper portion of the casting adapted to be suitably connected to overhead shower bath apparatus or the like.
The rear face of the casting 5 is provided with spaced internally threaded openings 10 and 11 into which are screwed the threaded ends of caps 12 and 13. These caps are providedwith counter-sunk recesses 14 and 15 to receive the compression springs 16 and 17 which are respectively seated against the faces or shoulders 18 and 19 of said caps. Beyond the shoulders. 18 and 19, the caps are provided with smaller recesses 20 and 21 a apted to receive the ends of the valve stems 22 and 23 toform suitable guides therefor. The outer ends of the stems 22 and 23 are provided with flanged disk portions 24 and 25 adapted to receive suitable elastic washers 26 and .27, it being noted that the outer ends of the springs 16 and 17 respectively bear against the disk portions 24 and 25 to normally retain the valves closed with the washers 26 and 27 tightly engaging the seats 28 and 29 of the castlng 5. The washers 26 and 27 are retained in position by means of the valve guides 31 and 32 which are provided with screwthreaded stems 33-and 34 and these stems are screwed into thev valve stems 22 and 23 as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and are retained therein by suitable set screws and 36 which prevent turning --of said threaded stems and thereby secure the same against loosening and vibratin when in use.
Rigid washers 37 an 38 are provided between the adjacent faces of the washers 26 and 27 and the guides 31 and 32 to produce an even bearing or, in other words, to hold the elastic valve disks in proper position to produce an even bearing of the same upon the seats 28 and 29.
It is to be observed that the ports through the nipples 6 and 7 are not in communication with the ports through the nipples 8 and '9 when the valves are closed but the water is adapted to flow through the valves into the chamber 39 and then outwardly through the nipples 8 and 9, the port through the nipple 8 being illustrated partly in dotted lines and partly in full line at 40 in Fig. 2.
Each of the valve guides 31 and 32 are provided with integral lugs or extensions 41 and 42 which are adapted to be engaged by the cams of the actuating member 43- to force open and allow the valves to be closed by the springs 16 and 17 as will be made apparent hereinafter.
The actuating member 43 preferably consists in a disk end portion 44 having .upon its end face spaced cam projections 45 and 46, the former being in the form of a double cam inclined at both sides and the latter being in the form of a single cam while a suitable stop lug 47 is provided between the cam rojections 45 and 46. Projecting axially rom the disk portion 44 of the actuating member is a stem 48 which is provided with an angular end 49 adapted to be received within an angular opening 50 in the operating lever 51, the latter being secured in place by a suitable screw 52 threaded into the stem 48. The stem 48 is journaled through a central aperture in the combined cover plate and dial 53 and extends throu h a suitable stufling box 54 provided for orming a fluid-tight passage through which said stem 48 extends. The castin 5 is formed with a flat annular face 55 w ich is provided with an annular groove 56 and suitable projections 57 are provided adjacent each of the nipples 6, 7 8 and 9. These projections are provided with screw-threaded apertures to receive the screws 58 which also extend through apertures in the ears 59 of the plate 53 to secure said plate to the casting 5, a suitable elastic washer 60 bein interposed between the rear face of the p ate 53 and the face 55 of the casting to insure a water-tight joint. When the screws 58 are tightened a portion of the washer 60 is forced into the groove 56 making the joint additionally water-tight.
The operating lever 51 is normally positioned as shown in Fig. 1 with its pointer 61 lying adjacent the word shut which appears on the dial at the left hand side thereof.
In operation, if it is desired to allow cold water to flow through the nipple 7, and out through the nipples 8 and 9, the lever 51 is moved downwardly so as to bring the pointer 61 adjacent the word cold which appears on the dial as shown in Fig. 1, at which time the cam 45 bears against the lug 41 and gradually raises the valve associated therewith while the cam 46 is moved to a position adjacent the lug 42. Upon further movement of the lever, the cam 46 engages the lug 42 thereby opening the valve associated with the latter lug and at the same time, the cam 45 is moved to allow the lug 41 to slightly move outward and partially close the valve associated with said lug 41. It is apparent that in this position the pointer 61 will be adjacent the word warm on the dial plate 53 and that each of the valves will be partially opened to thereby allow a quantity of both cold and hot water to pass through thenipples 8 and 9 and supply warm water. Upon still further movement of the lever in the same direction, the cam 45 leaves the lug 41 and allows the valve associated therewith to completely close and during this movement the valve associated with the lug 42 is completely opened by riding upon the highest portion of the cani ro ection 46. In this position the face 62 oi the stop lug 47 engagesthe side of the lug-41 and thereby prevents any further movement of the lever. When the two valves are entirely shut and when the lever is positioned as shown in Fig.1, the face 63 of the lug 47 engages a side of the lug 42 and thereby prevents the lever 51 from being raised to a higher position than that illustrated in Fig. 1.
It is noted that the front plate 53 is in one piece and constitutes both a dial as well as a cover, while the particular manner in which this plate is secured to the casting in-' sures a water-tight joint and also provides a means whereby such plate may be easily and quickly removed for renewing the parts such as the washer 60. The provision of detachable recessed caps 20 and 21 in this particular device provides a ready means for removing the valves and besides forming an abutment for the springs, 16 and 17, they alsg 2sgerve to efi'ectively guide the stems 22 an The length of the stems 33 and 34 ac loosen and upon the passage of water through the valves considerable noise due to vibration would ensue.
From this detaileddescription of the invention, it is believed that the construction and operation of the device will be readily and clearly understood when viewed in connection with the drawings and while the form of theinvention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the pref erable embodiment thereof, it is to be understood that minor changes maybe made in the forms, combination, and arrangement of parts, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is 1. A graduating bath valve including a casting having hot and cold water inlet ports and an outlet port, a pair of spring seated valves adapted to control the flow of the hot and cold water respectively, and means for opening said valves including a rotatable disk having a double cam and a single cam in spaced relation on one face thereof, and a stop lug upon said disk between said cams.
2. A graduating bath valve including a casting having hot and cold water inlet ports and an outlet port, recessed caps secured to the rear face of said casting, a pair of valve seats in said casting, a pair of valves in said casting adapted to engage said seats and provided with guides at opposite sides thereof, one of said guides being received in each of the recessed caps, springs engaging said caps and said valves for normally closing the latter, and a cam disk adapted to engage the other guide members of the valves to open the latter, said cam disk being provided with cam projections adapted to allow both of said valves to close, to open either of said valves or to open both of thesame, and a stop lug carried by said cam disk cooperating with said other guide members to prevent rotation of the cam disk in one direction when the valves are closed and to prevent rotation of said cam disk in the opposite direction when the valve controlling the hot water is entirely open.
