W. L, KUTSCHER. 1 PETCOCK OPERATING MEANS FOR AUTOMOBILES.
.APPLICATION FILED JAN-2, 291s.

WILLIAM L. KUTSCHER I, 0F READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
BETGOCK-OPERATING MEANS FOR. AUTOMOBILES.
menace.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Oct. 1, 1918.
Application filed January 2, 1918. Serial No. 209,962.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. KU'rsoHnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new required operation of the oil-control petcocks, and to be readily and advantageously applied to the machine; as fully set forth in connection with the accompanying drawing, and the novel features of which are specifically pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a small portion of an automobile structure showing the application thereto of my improved petcock mechanism.-
Figs. 2, 3 and 4 arediiferent views of a' detached pet-,cock'havingmy operating rod operatively engaged with the rotary plug.
Fig. 5 shows the rod in vertical position, as required when engaging or disengaging it with the plug. 1
Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are separate views of the rod-bearing attachment applicable to the foot board of the automobile.
Fig. 9 is a separate view of the tensioning spring. l
My attachment is particularly applicable to a Ford automobile, the 'foot board of which is indicated at 6, and two oil-control pet-cocks at 7, 7 the latter having the usual plug 8 with finger-grip 9, and being applied to the crank-case as shown.
These pet-cocks being located in a some- What inaccessible position, I provide sepa- U40 ratecock-operating rods 10, 10, arranged transversely on the automobile and having bent outer portions forming handles 11, 11, conveniently arranged for the operator.
Each of these rods is mounted in a bearing piece 12-, which is adjustably secured beneath the foot board 6, by means of bolts engaging slotted openings 13,13, therein; and apertures 14 14, in the depending portion 15, of the bearing piece, receive and support the outer portions of the respective rods. 1
The inner end of each rod is peculiarly .formed so as to adapt it for ready engagement or disengagement with a pet-cock plug, and for positively operating the latter when in engagement therewith; said end portion 20 being bent into a U-shape arranged at right angles to the body of the rod, and the free U member being provided with an extension 22,
running parallel with the body of the rod.
This end formation permits the rod to be loosely hung vertically upon the horizon tally turned finger grip of the plug 8, as
indicated in Fig. 5; and when the rod is turned to operating horizontal position causes the inverted U portion to overhang the plug back of its'finger-grip, while the body of the rod and said extension 22 bear against the under side of the finger-grip, as indicated in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. When set into operative horizontal position, the rod is thus rigidly engaged with the plug so as to impart to it any turning movement applied to the conveniently located outer han dle' end 11 ofjthe rod. This engagement with the plug also prevents any end-wise movement of the rod; but in order to prevent any rattling movement due to looscness in the bearings, I employ a tensioningspring rod connection 25, which takes up all lost motion in the applied parts in a very simple and satisfactory way. The device is simple in construction and application, and provides for very conveniently operating the cooks to testthe oil supply in the crank case.
That I claim is:
1. In combination with an automobile, pet-cocks connected to the engine crank-case thereof and each provided with a fingergrip plug, a rod-bearing attachment secured to the foot-board, rods independently mounted in said attachment and having end por tions operatively engaging the, respective finger-grip plugs, and a transversely arranged spring connecting said rods.
2. An operating'rod' for a pet-cock consisting of a single rigid Wire bent to form at one end thereof a U-member perpendicular .to the line of the rod, the free end of said member being bent to lie on the same side thereof as the body of the rod and being. arallel with thelatter and spaced theret'i om to cooperatively engage the pet cock finger piece.
In'testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
WILLIAM L. KUTSCHER.
