Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented (Dot. 1, 1918..
' Application filed March 15, 1918. Serial No. 222,631.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY A. HERRoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hardin, in the county of Calhoun and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mattocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved mattock and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a mattock having a head provided with an ax blade and a grubbing blade the said blades being located at the opposite sides of the head. The ax blade is provided with a rear edge which lies in the same plane as that in which the end of the eye of the head lies and the grubbing blade is provided with a rear side which lies in a plane at an acute angle with relation to the plane in which the rear edge of the ax blade lies whereby the rear edge of the ax blade may be used as a fulcrum durino the grubbing operation to assist in forcing the grubbing blade through the soil and in lifting the same.
In the accompanying drawing l igure 1 is a perspective view of the mattock head.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
The other figures are detailed views of the features of the invention.
The mattock Lead includes an eye 1 having an ax blade 2 and a grubbing blade 3 integrally joined therewith and at the op posite sides thereof. The eye is provided with the usual tapered opening 4 through which a handle or staff may be inserted. The ax blade 2 is provided with a rearflat edge 5 which lies in the same plane as that in which one of'the' ends of the eye 1 lies. The said blade 2 is provided at itsinner pore tion with a longitudinally disposed straight cutting edge 6 passed under its end with a transversely disposed cutting edge 7.
i The grabbing blade 3 is provided at its.
rear side with aplane surface 8 which lies at an acute angle to the plane in which the tion of the blade 3 is slightly chamfered as at 9 at its outer end. And the blade 3 is The rear porthat in which provided at its outer end with a trans versely disposed cutting edge 10. The transverse thickness of the blade 3 gradually increases from the cutting edge 10 to the side of the eye 1 and the inner portion of the blade 3 in the vicinity of the longitudinal edgesthereof is cut away as at 11 thereby providing a spine or ridge 12 which serted in the soil the handle or staff which is attached to the head may be swung whereby the straight edge 5 of the blade 2 may be used as a fulcrum against the hard soil for moving the blade 3 through thesoil loosening and lifting the same.
By reason of the fact that the surface 5 of the blade 3 is plane the said blade 3 may be readily forced into the soil and in view of the fact that the blade 3 is provided with the thickened portion or ridge 12 the blade 3 is strengthened and is not liable to be broken off when it is forced through the soil or when it is lifting the same. When the implement is used for cutting roots or the like the blade 2 is used and the edge 7 may be forced against the roots or the edge 6 of the blade 2 may be forced under or beyond the roots and then the head may be swung whereby the edge 2 may be caused to sever the roots as the head swings or turns.
In this event the blade 3 may serve as a fulcrum for" the blade 2 to assist the cut ting operation.
,ate portion provided with an eye, an ax [blade joined with the eye portion and hav- 1n the same plane as ing a rear edge lying the end of the eye lies, the ax blade being provided at its inner portion with a longitudinally disposed cuttinv edge, a and a grubbing blade attached to the eye portion and having at its outer side a plane 5 surface disposed at an acute angle to the plane in which the rear edge of the ax blade lies, the said cutting blade being provided with a longitudinally disposed strengthening rib located at its inner side, the cutting edge of the ax blade lying in the same 10 plane as that in. Whioh the median longitndinal dimension of the rib lies:
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
-HARRXQALLEN HERR'ON.
