To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, Svnn J. S'rmn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago Heights, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Furniture, of which the following is a specification.

My invention pertains to convertible fur niture, and its objectjs to provide an artie'le of thatcharacter which may serve at one time as an arm chair differing little in appearance from ordinary forms of chairs, and which ma by a single simple swin' 11g "movement e converted into a child s crib. "This crib is further adjustable "in lengthby asimple-sliding movement to accommodate children of varying ages.

My invention comprises generally a combined chair and cribfstructure consisting of a stationary section or frame having a back and arm rails, within which is supported a central platform or bench, and a swinging seat (section or frame having a seat supported by said platform and a back and depending siderailings resting within and fitting against adjacent portions of the stationary section, this swinging section being ivotall connected with the central platform n the stationary section alon its from edge, and' preierably al o Slidmgly connected with such platform. In the partloular form of my invention illustrated the stationary frame includes front legs 1, 1," connected at the top by the cross bar 2, back legs 3, 3 extended upwardly and connected together by lower and upper cross bars 4: and 5 and vertical bars 6 extending between such cross bars to form a back support, lower side bars 7 and upper side bars 8 extending between the front and back legs, rails 9 extending from the top of the front legs (which extend above the bars 8) to the rear leg members, and vertical strips 10 ex-- tending between the arm rails and the up per side bars of the frame. The central platform 11 which forms a support for the swinging seat frame is in the present instance supported at the rear by standards 12 rising from a cross piece 13 extending between the lower side bars 7 of the supporting frame, and at its front by the cross strip or rail 2 extending betweenthe front legs 3. This central platform in the present instance consists of a three-sided frame narrower than the space between the side bars 8 and spaced forward of the lower cross bar 4:, the space thus provided between the side and rear edges of the platform. and the adjacent portion of the supporting frame being arranged to receive a frame work or railing depending from the chair seat, hereinafter described.

In order to provide for lengthening the crib, if desired, the platform is in the present instance formed with a slide 15 "mounted in the three-sided frame 11 before resting (when in position to serve as a chair) upon the central platform of the stationary frame, depending side frames and a back frame connected together and comprising the side bars 17, 17, cross bar 18 and vertical strips 19 extending between the seat 16 and such bars 17, upwardly extending back strips 20 and a top cross piece 21.

The side and back frame members 17, 18, 19 and part of the strips 20 are received 1n the space around the central platform of the pp r g r me and the back strip and cross-piece fit snugly against the adjacent vertical bars 6 of the stationary frame and portions of the back legs 3,

(which are cut away or shouldered to receive the cross-piece 21,) and the upper cross-bar 5, so that when folded the chair will present the ordinary and conventional appearance of arm chairs having the Well known pattern of back illustrated.

From the description thus far given it will be" obvious that with'the swinging hinged member in the positionshown in Fig. 1, the article forms an arm chair, while if such member is swung on its hinge connection with the, slide 15 to inverted position, as shown in Fig. 4, it will form a crib inclosed b a railing consisting of the arms and bac of the chair, and side and back frame of the swinging seat portion referred to as depending when considered with respect to the seat member in its opposite position. This crib, as before explained, may

. be lengthened within limits imposed by its dimension, by drawing out the slide.

It is obvious that the number and arrangement of the various frame members may be varied to a considerable extent without departing from my invention, and I therefore do not limit myself to the exact construction above described.

I claim:

1. A convertible chair and crib comprising a stationary section including supporting members, a back, side frame members, and a central platform; and a swinging section including a seat hinged to the front of said platform, a depending railing adapted to fit between said platform and the adjacent side and back members of the stationary section, and a back connected to the back portion of said railing adapted to rest against the back portion of said stationary section in one posltion and adapted to form a support for said swinging section when such section is inverted to form a crib.

A convertible chair and crib comprising a stationary section including supporting members, a back and a central platform; and a swinging section including a seat hingedly connected with said. platform along its front edge, and a back rigidly connected to saidseat and formed with a top rail adapted to rest in a seat formed in the rear portion of said stationary section, said back being constructed and. arranged to form with the rear portion of thestationary section. a conventional back for the chair and -when inverted serve as .a support-for said seat portion to form the crib.

and a swinging section including a seat h g d to the front of said sl d and a b rigidly connected to said seat and formed with a top rail adapted to rest in a seat formed in the rear portion of said stationary section, said back being constructed and ar ranged to form with the rear ortion of the stationary section a conventlonal back for the chair and when inverted serve as a support for said seat portion to form the crib.-

4. A convertible chair and crib comprising a stationary section including supporting members, a back, arm rails located above the plane of the seat, and a central platform; and a swinging section including a seat hingedly connected with said platform along its front edge, a depending rail ing adapted to fit between said platform and the adjacent side and back members of the stationary section, and a back onnected to the back portion of said railing adapted to rest against the back portion of saidstationary section in one position and adapted to form a support for said swinging section when such section is inverted to form a crib.

5. A convertible chair and crib comprising a stationary section including supporting members, a back, arm rails located above the plane of the seat, and a central platform; a slide mounted in said platform; and a swinging section including a seat hinged to the front ofsaid slide, a depend ing railingv adapted to fit-between said platform and. the adjacent side and back mem-. bers of the stationary section, and a back connected to the back ortion of said railing adapted to rest against the back portion of said stationary section in one position and adapted to form a support for said swing ing section when such section is inverted to form a crib.

A convertible chair and crib comprising a stationary section including osts 12 supported at their bottom ends, a ont cross-bar 2 supported at its ends, a platform resting upon said posts and crossbar, and a swinging section includin a seat 16 hingedly connected to said- .p atforin along its front edges and a back rigidly secured to said seat and having an upwardly extending portion serving when. the swinging section is inverted as a Support-to maintain the seat in the'sameplane as said platform and also havinga depending portion adjacent said posts 12' arranged to serve as, a foot rail when the section is inverted.

7. A convertible chair and crib comprising a stationary section including supporting members, arm rails and a central platform; and a swinging section including a seat hingedly connected with said platform along its front edge, depending rallingsat opposite sides of said seat, and a back serving when the swingingsection is inverted as .a support to maintain theseatinthe same lane as said platform.
