MERVIN T. FIELD, OF TREN'ION, NEW JERSEY.
COMBINED SNOW PLOW AND SHOVEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 10, 1918.
Application filed November 7, 1917. Serial No. 200,772.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, MERVIN J. FIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Snow Flows and Shovels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved snow shovel for use in shoveling off snow from a side-walk or the like and also convertible into a snow plow, for pushing off the snow, so that the device can be used either as a shovel or as a plow o-r pusher as may be desired, and as required by the depth of the snow, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this character which is simple in construction, is strong and durable, and which may be instantly arranged for either of the uses for which the same is adapted.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of my combined snow shovel and plow, and showing the same as arranged for use as a shovel.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same as arranged for use as a snow plow or pusher.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation -of the same as arranged for use as a shovel.
Fig. 4 is a detail plan of the inner end of the handle and the hook link.
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional View, on the plane indicated by the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
The blade 1 of my improved combined snow shovel and plow is here shown as of rectangular form and as made of sheet metal of suitable gage and is provided at the upper side with a forwardly extending flange 2. If preferred the blade may be formed with vertical corrugations 3 to strengthen the construction of the same and which terminate short of the sides of the The blade is curved vertically and presents a concave front face and a convex rear face.
On the rear side of the blade at a suitable distance from the upper side thereof are secured a pair of angle lugs 4 between which the front end of the handle 5 is pivotally mounted as at 6 so that the handle may be arranged parallel with the general plane of the blade to enable the device to be used as a shovel or nearly at right-angles with re spect to the general plane of the blade to adapt the device for use as a snow plow or pusher. The handle is here shown as provided with a reinforcing strap 6 on opposite sides and at its front end and is also provided in its front side, with a recess 7 near the pivotal end and a recess 8 which is spaced a slight distance from the recess 7.
A hook link 9 is foldable into the recess 7 and is pivotally mounted at its rear end in said recess as at 10 and is provided at its front end with a bill 11 which may be engaged in a keeper 12 on the rear side of the shovel blade, to lock the blade to the handle when the blade is arranged at approximately right-angles to the handle, to adapt the device for use as a plow or pusher. Preferably the hook link is provided with recesses 9 in opposite sides to enable the same to be readily grasped.
A dog 13 is pivotally mounted as at 14 between a pair of angle lugs 15 which are secured on the flange at the upper side of the blade. The dog is adapted to engage an inverted U-shaped keeper 16 which is secured on the handle and extends across the front side of the recess 8, the exposed portion of said recess serving to clear the engaging end of the dog. WVhen the hook link has been disconnected from the shovel blade the handle may be then arranged substantially parallel with the general plane of the blade and the dog engaged with the keeper 16, thus locking the handle to the blade and adapting the device to be used as a shovel. A spring 17 is provided to normally hold the dog in engaged position.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention, I would rave it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts, without departing fromthe spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claims. v 1Having thus described my invention, I c a1m 1. The herein described convertible shovel and pusher or plow comprising a blade having a keeper on its rear side, a dog pivotally mounted on the upper side of the blade, a handle pivotally connected to the rear side of the blade, a hook link pivotally connected to the handle and adapted to engage the keeper to secure the blade when arranged at an angle to the handle, and a keeper With Which the handle is provided and adapted to be engaged by the dog to secure the handle and blade together When arranged in a substantially parallel relation.
2. The herein described convertible shovel and pusher or plow comprising a blade having a keeper on its rear side, a dog pivotally mounted on the upper side of the blade, a handle pivotally connected to the rear side of the blade, a hook link pivotally connected to the handle and adapted to engage the keeper to secure the blade When arranged at an angle to the handle and a keeper With Which the handle is provided and adapted to be engaged by the dog to secure the handle and blade together When arranged in a substantially parallel relation the handle being provided With a recess to receive the hook link When the latter is disconnected from the keeper of the shovel and being also provided With a recess to clear the engaging end of the dog.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature.
MERVIN J. FIELD.
