Be it knownthat I, LoUIs SAINBERG, a

citizen of the United States, and: a resident of New York, county and- State of New York, have invented a certainnew and useful Improvement in Filing Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

This invention relates to a class of" devices adaptedto permitv cards, papers andthe like to be filed for convenient use.

My invention'hasfor its object primarily to provide a device designed-to be emplo ed as a file whereby cards, papers, and the fike may be arranged so as to be preserved in compact and orderly manner for ready reference as occasion may require, and which is so-formed that varyingquantities' of the articles may be accommodated and kept for being easy of access. This is accomplished mainly by providing a receptacle in which are arranged two spaced parallel stationary track members, or guide rods disposed at an elevation above the bottom of the receptacle for supporting the cards, or papers on an even plane when filedin thereceptacle, and mounted on these guide rods is a follower, or retaining element adapted to beslidably adjusted back and forth for pressingthe articles together to prevent their accidental loss when not in use, or to allow the articles to be spread apart for convenient reference thereto when desired as well' as to permit additi naI papers tobe filedin the receptacle.

Another object of the invention isto provide the-follower with an integral locking member in the form of a substantially L- shaped.extensionadapted to frictionally engage the guide rods in a manner so as to automatically lock the follower against accidental movement when pressure is appliedon the follower; and a further ob ect of the invention is to provide a filing device of a simple and efficient construction, and which may be made so as to combine unusual strength and durability.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, the said invention being more fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in 5 the claim at the end of the description.

The follower 18 has a plate 19 which is preferably substantially rectangular in shape, and this plate is of less dlmensionthan'the interior of the'receptacle 10 so *as to be freely moVable therein. Throughthe plate 19 adjacent to its lower. edge are: two openings 20 and 2-1 which are spaced apart at a distance equal to the spacing of the guide rods 16- and*'17, andthrou'gh these openings are passed the guide rods 16 and 17 for mounting the plate thereon so as to be upwardly disposed in the receptacle 10. The lower edge of the plate 19 is spaced slightly above the bottom of the receptacle, and the openings 20 and 21 of the plate are larger than the diameters of the guide rods to allow the plate to be slidably adjusted back and forth on the guide rods. By forming the follower 18 in this manner, and disposing the plate 19 and the strip 24 on inclines the guide rods will be frictionally engaged by the edges of the openings 20, 21 and 25, 26 when even a slight pressure is applied on the plate 19, and the follower will then be releasably locked to the rods against accidental. movement.

When it isdesired to use the filing device, the cards, papers, or the like to be filed are disposed in the receptacle between its rear wall 13 and the inclined apertured plate 19 of'the follower 18. When the plate 19 is then slightly tilted rearwardly the engagement of the follower with the guide rods 16 and '17 will be released, and the follower maythen be slidably adjusted on the guide rods so as to abut against the contents of the V receptacle. The contents will thereby be se-- curely held in the receptacle, and when it is 'desired to refer to one, or more of the filed articles, or when additional articles are to be filed in the receptacle, the follower 18 is operated in a similar manner to free its engagement with the guide rods. In the foregoing description, I have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I i am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope thereof.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A filing device comprising a substantially rectangular plate having on one of its longitudinal edges an approximately L-shaped extension integrally formed with the plate so that its intermediate arm is disposed on somewhat an acute angle relative to the plate, while the free arm of said extension is disposed on an obtuse angle relative to'its intermediate arm, and spaced pairs of registered holes through the plate and the free arm of the extension, in combination with two rods one arranged 1n each pa1r of sand openings so that the plate with its extension is movable thereon, and a receptacle in which said rods are fixed. f
