Description

D. 1. CARR.
WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 29. l9l8.
Patented Sept. 10,1918.
DANIEL J. CARE, OF COFFEYVILLE, KANSAS.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept.10, 1918.
Application filed May 29, 1918. Serial No. 237,253.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL J. CARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coffeyville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a wrench of simple and durable structure the parts of which may be easily and quickly adjusted to: fit different sizes of nuts or bolt heads, there being also provided simple means for securely holding the parts at the adjusted position.
Another object is to provide in combina tion with the wrench proper a detachable jaw member which may be used when the wrench is employed for turning hexagonal or oxagonal parts.
With these objects in view the wrench comprises a bar having a jaw fixed at one end thereof and provided at the jaw with a loop. The said bar is further provided at one edge with a set of teeth. The wrench includes a second bar having teeth adapted to engage the teeth of the first mentioned bar, the second mentioned bar being slidably received in the loop. The second mentioned bar is provided with a fixed jaw adapted to cooperate with the firstmentioned jaw in grasping an object. A spring is attached to the second mentioned bar and bears against the edge of the first mentioned bar. A clip is mounted upon the second mentioned bar and is provided with outstanding lugs. The said outstanding lugs are received in L- shaped slots which are provided in a yoke slidably mounted upon the first mentioned bar. A jaw member is provided and may be mounted upon the fixed jaw of the first mentioned bar and the said jaw member is provided with an inclined edge having serrations or teeth and is used when the implement is employed for turning hexagonal or oxagonal objects.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side view of the wrench showing the parts in one position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts in another position and parts broken away.
Fig. 3 is a erspective view of a yoke used on the wrench.
Fig. 4 is a similar View of a detachable jaw which may be applied to the wrench.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective viewv of the end portion of one of the bars of the wrench.
The wrench comprises a bar 1 which is provided at one edge with a series of teeth 2. A fixed jaw 3 is carried at one end of the bar 1 and a loop 4 is mounted upon'the jaw 3. V
The wrench also includes a movable bar 5 having at one edge teeth 6 which may engage the teeth 2. The bar 5 is slidably received in the loop 4. The bar 5 is provided at one end with a fixed jaw 7 which is adapted to cooperate with the jaw 3 when the wrench is used upon objects having rectangularly disposed sides. A clip 8 is mounted upon the bar 5 and is provided at its sides with outstanding lugs 9. The end portions of the clip 8 lie at the sides of the bar 1. The clip 8 is fixed with relation to the bar 5. A yoke member 10 is slidably mounted upon the bar 1 and is provided at its sides with L-shaped slots 11. The slots 11 receivethe lugs 9. A spring 12 is attached to one end of the bar 5 and bears at its free end against the edge of the bar 1. The
spring 12 has a tendency to hold the end of the bars 5 and 1 away from each other and the teeth which disengage from the teeth 2. When the ends of the bars 1 and 5 are forced toward each other the teeth 2 will engage between the teeth 6 and the lugs 9 may be moved into these angularly disposed end portions of the slots 11 whereby the bars 1 and 5v are fixed with relation to each other. Therefore the said bars may be moved longitudinally with respect to each other and a nut or bolt head may be received between the o posite faces of the jaws 3 and 7 en it is desired to use the wrench for turning objects which have their sides arranged in the form of an oxagon or hexagon a jaw member 13 is applied to the jaw 3. The said jaw member 13 is provided with an inclined edge having teeth or serrations 14. Plates 15 are located at the opposite sides of the jaw member 13 and may lie against the sides of the jaw 3. A pivot bolt 16 may be passed transversely through the plates 15 and the jaw 3 whereby the jaw member 13 is held in position upon thej aw 3. The pivotal connection between the jaw 3 and the jaw member 13 may be sufliciently loose .to. permit themember 13 .to :havelslight swin in or rockin movement with. rela- .7
tion to the jaw 3 when the wrench. is inoperation. Therefore the jaw 3 may have a swinging movement similar to that found: in
' adjusted and-when adjusted may be securely held at the adjusted position.
Having describedthe invention what is claimed is v A wrench comprising-a bar provided at its edge'with teeth and having a fixed jaw, ,a
aloop, mounted upon, the jaw a second bar having teeth adapted to engage the first mentioned teeth, the second mentioned bar being slidablyrec'eived in the loop, the sec- ;ond mentioned bar having a jaw, a spring carried by the second mentioned bar and bearingagainst the edge of the first mentioned bar and normally holding the'two sets of teethspaced from each other, a clip fixed to the second mentioned barand having outstanding",lugs, fand a yoke slid-ably ymonnted .upon the first mentioned barrand vhaving L-shaped slots which receive the said lugsand which hold the two sets of'teeth'in engagement with each other when the: lugs are in the end portionsof the slots.
vIn testimony whereof I affix mysignature.
DANIEL J. CARR.
