Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 10, 1918.
Application filed February 2, 1916. Serial No. 75,808.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jnssn J. PRU'ITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paton, in the county of Greene and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a toy in the form of a top having one or a group of figures of flexible material mounted thereon, with means for inflating figures while the top is spinning, thereby distending the figure or figures and adding an attractive feature to the top, and increasing the amusement which may be derived from the same.
With this object in view the top includes a hollow body provided at its sides with openings having at one edge thereof outwardly disposed lips. The said body is mounted upon a hollow shaft which is provided within the body with an opening. An expansible figure is mounted upon the shaft above the body, and a string or other device may be wound about the shaft for spinning the top. With this arrangements of parts as the body spins the outstanding lips force drafts of air into the body through the openings thereof, and the air thus accumulated in the body passes through the opening of the shaft and enters the expansible figure which is distended during the spinning movement of the body.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of the top.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
The top includes a hollow body 1 preferably of sheet metal, having at its side openings 2, and provided at one edge of the openings with outwardly disposed lips 3. The lips 3 are so disposed with relation to the openings 2 as to direct blasts of air into the body 1 when the same is spun.
A hollow shaft 4 is centrally positioned in the body 1 and is provided between the upper and lower sides of the body with an opening 5. One or more such openings maybe provided if desired. An expansible figure 6 is mounted upon the upper end of Copies of this patent may be obtained to: five cents each, by addreuing Washington, Dec."
the shaft 4: at a point above the upper side of the body 1. The said figure may be made of rubber or similar material. The shaft 4 is provided at its upper end portion with an opening or openings 7, which are located within the figure 6. There is ample room between the lower end of the figure 6 and the top of the body 1 to permit a string or' cord to be wound about the shaft f for the purpose of spinning the body 1.
When the body 1 is spun the lips 3 direct blasts of air into the said body through the openings 2 and the air passes through the openings 5 and up along the shaft 4 into the figure 6 which is thereby distended. Consequently during the spinning movement of the body the figure 6 is made to appear grotesque.
The quantity of air which is gathered in the body and figure depends upon the rate of speed at which the body 1 is spun, and hence the figure may be distended much or little depending on the rate of speed of the rotation of the body. 7
simple structure is provided. and that the same is rendered attractive by reason of the fact that the figure is mounted thereon in a manner to assume grotesque shapes, during the spinning movement of the top.
Having described the invention what is claimed is z- A top comprising a body having openings and provided at the side of the openings with outstanding lips adapted to direct blasts of air into the body when the same is spun, a hollow shaft located in the body, said shaft being closed at its lower end and open at its upper end, the upper portion of the shaft extending beyond the top side of the body, said shaft being provided at its side with an opening located within the body and a hollow expansible figure mounted upon the shaft above the body and surrounding the open end of the shaft.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JESSE J. PRUITT.
