OPENER.
Speciiication of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 3, 1918.
Application filed May 20, 1918. Serial No. 235,512.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SARAH R. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Southern Pines, in the county of Moore and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Openers, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an implement for facilitating'the removal of caps or vcovers from fruit jars or the like. From experience I have found that a slight pressure exerted between the cover and jar, suflicient to permit of a slight passage of air between these members permits of the ready separation thereof, both the jar and its cover being frequently constructed of glass, such pressure should not be too pronounced. i
It is the object of the present invention to produce a point prying element loosely associated with a handle so that' the sameis susceptible to a slight movement inward of the handle, the element being under the inmovement of the prying element with re spect to the handle, -so that the device may guided by. a rod 12 which is of aless length than the sleeveS). The rod 12 is received in an inner concaved or recessed portion 13 of a knob or push member'l l, the rod being secured to the said member 14.
It will be apparent that the spring exerting a tension against the head8 permits of fiuence of a spring, the tension of which may be readily regulated to limit the sliding 1 be successfully employedin the successive steps necessitated in removing a cap or cover is formed a shank 7 that has its end headed as at 8, and this head end of the shank is received and guided by a sleeve 9 arranged longitudinally through a handle 10. The outer end of'the sleeve 9 is closed so that the head 8 cannot pass therethrough, and the head is contacted by a helical spring 11 received in the sleeve 9. This spring 11 is the yielding of the wedge or pry member 7 when the same is arranged between a jar and a cover therefor. Should it be required that the pressure between the wedge and the jar and cover be determined or non-yielding, the operator places his hand on the outer end of the handle forcing the element 14 inward of the sleeve 9, and causing a partial contrac-' tion of the presser spring 11 between the said element 14 and the head 8 of the wedge member, holding the wedge member against free longitudinal movement, or, in other words, locking the wedge member to the handle. 5
It is believed, from the foregoing that the simplicity and advantages of the construction will be apparent without further detailed description.
. Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1'. In a device for the purpose set forth, a
hollow handle, a wedge member having a headed shank received in said handle, a
spring element in the handle contacting with the head of the shank, a longitudinally movable presser element for said spring pro] ecb ing through one end of the handle, and means for limiting such longitudinal movement of saidelement.
2. In a device for the purpose 'set forth, a wedge member provided with a headed shank, a hollow handle receiving the head of said shrank, means on said handle for holding said shank against outward movement, a spring in the handle contactmg with the head of the shank, and an element extending through the handle and co-engaging with the spring and adapted, when moved inward of the shank to increase the pressure of the spring against the head of the shank. In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
.\ SARAH R. ANDERSON.
