- IEAGKAGE-REACHER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, citizen of the United States, residing at Gleason, in the county of Lincoln and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain useful Improvements in Package- Reachers, of which the following is a specification, reference" being had therein to the accompanying drawing. 1
The present invention has reference gen orally to improvementsin that class of illventions known as store service and more particularly relates to a package reacher.
As the primary aim and object this invention contemplates the provision of a device of the above character designed to be conveniently manipulated and actuated when in the hand of the user so as to be engaged about a package or article normally out of reach of the user thus enabling theuser to readily obtain such package or article without occasioning, any trouble or inconvenience.
It is an additional object of this invention to provide a package reacher designed to be actuated so that the clamping jaws thereof will be spread preparatory to being placed about a package and subsequent to the release thereof will effectively and tightly clamp the package to consequently assure of the easy removing of the package from its resting place.
More particularly, this invention embraces the provision of a device of the above character wherein relatively movable grippers are operatively connected to the clamping jaws to assure of a quick spreading thereof against the tension of the resilient means which is designed to normally hold the jaws in close relation with respect to each other.
Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the character mentioned wherein the parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and theefliciency high.
Other improvements and novel details'in the construction and arrangement of the various parts ofthe apparatus will be brought out more in detail in the description to follow, which for a clear understanding of the invention should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof; and wherein is disclosed for the purpose of illustration a con- JAMEs TIoHAon a ing a substantial fork.
- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept, 3, 1918, 1 Application filed sjepte mber 26, 1917;. Serial No. 193,295..
venient and satisfactory embodiment of the and arrangement of parts 'may be made without departing from the principle, of
operation of the various parts.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the device,
showingthejaws in a closed position; Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the jaws in an open position;
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the grips;
Fig. 1 is a perspective detail of one of the jaws...
1 Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, moreparticularly, to the accompanying drawings there is provided a main supporting handle 1 the outerend' of which terminates in diverging arms 2 form- Arcuate package clamping jaws .3 are now provided and are formed at their innerends with spaced ears & for arrangement about ears 5 formedjon the terminals'of the arms 72. .Suitablepivot' pins 6 are passed through the adjacent ears for pivotally connecting the jawsto the arms as indicated. The outer ends ofthe jaws are bent at right angles to the main portions and constitute gripping fingers 7 In order to normally hold the jaws in close relation with each other suitable resilient means is provided in the present jaws against the tension of the resilient means. In reducing this feature of the invention to practlce suitable grlpplng means 1s employed and consists of a substantlally rectangular frame indicated in its entirety V by the numeral 10. A ferrule or socketll is formed on the inner end of the frame for receiving the inner end of the handle 1. The outer end constitutes a stationary grip 12 while the sides serve as guides 13. about which are slidably engaged the looped ends 14: of the grip 15 movable relative to the stationary grip 12. In operably connecting the movable grip to the jaws suit:
able flexible means are employed and preferably consists of pieces of cord 16. The outer ends of the cords 16 are rigidly connected in loops 17 carried by the rear faces of the jaws at points slightly beyond the eyes 9 while the intermediate portions of the cords are respectively slidably arranged through loops 18 carried by the handle at the point of juncture of the arms and through openings 19 in the inner end of the frame, 10 so as to be guided thereby. The inner ends of the cords are fastened to the movable grip preferably in the eyes E20 formed adjacent the ends thereof.
In use, the length of the cord 16 is such that when the jaws are in a closed position as shown in Fig. 1 the movable grip will be positioned adjacent the inner end of the frame 10. Upon relative movement of the grips 11 and 12 a pull will be imparted to each cord which acts against the tension of the spring 8 thus causing a' spreading of the jaws and enables the user to arrange them about a package by manipulating the handle and subsequent to the release of the grips the spring will act to clamp the jaws on the package whereupon the user may readily obtain such package.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently Widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not Gopiesot this patent may be obtained for in a limited sense. It is also to be understood that thelanguage used in the follow- 1ng claim is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention, which as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
Having thus fully described this invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters-Patent, 'is:
A package reacher including a handle, diverging arms formed on the outer end thereof, arcuate'package clamping aws pivotally mounted on the outer ends of the arms, gripping fingers formed on the ends of the jaws, a coil spring having its respective ends connected to the jaws for normally holding the jaws in close relation with respect to each other, a frame the inner end of which is connected to the opposite end of the handle and provided with openings, the outer end of the frame constituting a stationary grip, a movable grip, loop on the ends of the movable grip and slidably mounted on the sides of the frame, guide eyes mounted on the handle, and flexible cables having their outer ends connected to the eyes on the jaws and their main portions trained through the eyes on the handle and the openings in the frame and also having their opposite ends connected to the eyes on the movable grip so that upon relative movement of the grips the jaws'will be spread.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
