To-aZZ wh'o'mit may concern: i
Be it known that I, LOUIS A. PAZA-NDAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful! Improvements in Hitches for Vehicles, of'whi'eh: the following is a specification. x
My inwention: relates to hitches for vehicles and has for its object to provide a The fullobjeets and aclwantages-of'my invention will appear in connection with-thedetailed description thereof and are particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, illustrating the application of my invention in one form,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a vehicle with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the vehicle shown in Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4; are enlarged detail views similar to Figs. 1 and 2 of some of the parts shown in said figures.
My invention may easily be applied to any vehicle of which an ordinary form is shown in the drawings. The rear gear comprises an axle 10 to which are attached hounds 11 suitably braced thereunto. The front gear includes an axle 12 provided with hounds 13 and a bolster beam 14 secured thereto in the usual manner. A king bolt 15 passes directly through the body support 16, the bolster 14 and extends a short distance into the axle itself. To the forwardly-extending portions of hounds 13 is pivoted a tongue 17 of usual construction on a bolt 18 passing directly through the same.
In applying my invention to a vehicle constructed as above outlined, the usual reach is discarded and a metal reach 19, preferably of channel construction, substituted which is drilled to receive the king bolt 15 at one end. Near the center of the same is provided a plurality of holes 20 by means of Which the hounds 11 andthe rear axle 10 may be adjustably attached thereto. Reach 19* extendsout beyond the rear. of the axle 10 to: a point sufii'ciently near the end of the wagon-box for convenient coupling and is provided at that end with a coupling memher-21 securely fastened thereto. All of the p draft strain is as usual. transmitted through the reach. c
From the king bolt the draft. is taken as follows. A coupling member 22 has an ear 23by means of which the: same can be pivoted on the king bolt 15 within channelvinember 19-, as best shown in F igs. 3 and 4. This member is preferably forged and is provided with two forked portions .241 and 25 which a'reannular in formation and which straddle the center beam 26 of the'tongue l7 and are pivoted on the tongue bolt 18. Members 2 1 and 25 are made anlnula'r 'so th-at the crossbar 34 at the end of the tongue 17, which passes through the .7
openings in these members shall be free to move as the tongue is oscillated. 'By'this device the draft is taken from the reach 19 through the king bolt 15 and to the tongue bolt 18 without stress upon the front hounds 13. At the bolt 18 between members 24 and 25 is provided a forked member 27 through which said bolt passes, which member terminates in a long bar 28 positioned upon the top of the tongue 17. Bar 28 is secured to the tongue by a bolt 29 remotely positioned from bolt 18 and is thereafter jogged at 30 to form an arm 31 positioned above the tongue in spaced parallel relation thereto. This arm is secured to the tongue 17 by means of a U-bolt clip 32 and is provided at its free end with an aperture by means of which the hitch is made. V I
In using the device the arm 31 is hitched to the coupling 21 of the preceding vehicle, causing the tongue to extend below the rear axle 10 and beneath the wagon proper. In this manner any number of wagons or vehicles may be hitched together to be hauled by a tractor without fear of breaking any of the parts of the first vehicles in the train. It will be noted that the armpivoted to the king bolt and attached to the tongue bolt, said member having'a depression therein to permit of free movement of the crossbar of the tongue, and hitching means pivoted on the tongue bolt and associated with the tongue for providing draft means from the reach independent of the tongue and bound of the vehicle. I
2. In combination with the reach and front gear of a vehicle, a connecting member pivoted to the king bolt and attached to the tongue bolt, and hitching means pivoted on the tongue bolt and secured to the tongue for providing draft means from the reach independent of the tongue and hounds of the vehicle and for supporting the tongue. 3. In combination With the reach and front gear of a vehicle, a connecting member pivoted to the king bolt and attached to the tongue bolt, and hitching means pivoted on the tongue bolt, and secured to the tongue for providing draft means from the reach independent of the tongue and hounds ofthe vehicle and for supporting the tongue, said last-named means terminating in a hitching bar having a coupling end remote from the end of the tongue and adapted to be coupled to the rear of a second vehicle With the tongue extending under the body .of said second vehicle.
Copies of this patent may be obtainedvfor 4. In combination with the reach and front gear of a vehicle, a connecting member pivoted to the king bolt and attached to the tongue bolt, and hitching means pivoted on the tongue bolt and secured to the tongue for providing draft means from the reach independentrof the tongue and hounds of the vehicle and for supporting the tongue, said last-named means terminating in a hitching bar spaced from said tongue and adapted to be coupled to the reach of a second vehicle so that the tongue extends beloW the rear axle of said second vehicle.
5. In combination With the reach and front gear of a vehicle, a connecting member pivoted to the king bolt of said vehicle, a pair of forked arms on said member straddling the end of the tongue and attached to the tongue bolt, said arms being formed annular and encompassing the crossbar of said tongue for permitting free movement of the tongue, and hitching means pivoted on said in presence of two Witneses.
