Be it known that I, GEORGE HANS LEMKE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Zumbro Falls, in the county of Wabasha and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new `and useful Improvements in W'ashboilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in wash boilers, and has for its object to provide an attachment for boilers of the `character specified which may be detachably connected with the top of the boiler, and which carries means for lowering and raising a rack of garments into and out of the water in the boiler.

The present embodiment of the invention is shown in connection with a wash boiler 1 of ordinary construction, having the usual bead 1a at its top, and the attachment comprises a loop consisting of a body 2 of yoke or U-shape, adapted to engage one end of the boiler, and arms adapted to embrace opposite sides of the boiler, and hinged sections 3 which are hinged to the ends of the arms as indicated at )aand are adapted to be connected at their free ends by a bolt and nut 5.
The bolt is passed through outwardly eX- tending lugs 6 on the outer ends of the hinged sections and is engaged by the nut to clamp the loop on to the boiler. This loop has upwardly extending hooks 7 which are adapted to engage over the bead 1a of the boiler to prevent downward movement of the loop, and the loop is also provided with upwardly and outwardly extending bearing arms 8, the said arms being ar- -ranged in pairs, a pair at each side of the boiler, and a shaft 9 is journaled in each pair of arms.
Each shaft carries a pair of reels 10, the said reels being journaled adjacent to the brackets and at the outer sides of the pairs, and the reels of the shafts are in register. A flexible member 11, as, for instance, a rope or cable, is connected with the registering members of each pair of reels, the ends of the iieXible member being secured to the reels in any suitable or desired manner, and
these flexible members are adapted to support a rack or basket 12 of perforate material, as, for instance, wire, said rack being adapted to support the clothing in the boiler. This rack or basket, as shown in Figs. 2 and f1, is of a horizontal area less than that of the boiler, so that it will fit within the boiler, with the walls thereof in spaced relation, and it is of lesser depth than the boiler so that there will be a space between the bottom of the rack and the bottom of the boiler when the rack is in the position of Fig. 4.
The shafts 9 are simultaneously rotated in opposite directions by means of sprocket chains 13, each chain connecting a sprocket wheel 14C on a shaft 9, with a sprocket wheel 15 upon a shaft 16 or 16a journaled at the end of the boiler remote from the bolt 5. These shafts are journaled in substantially V-shaped brackets 17 and 17a, the bracket 17 being secured to the adjacent end ofthe loop, while the bracket 17a is supported by the shafts 9.V
The shafts 16 and 16a are geared together by gear wheels 18 secured to the shafts and meshing with each other, and it will be obvious that when the shaft 16 is rotated by means of the crank the shafts 9 will be rotated in opposite directions to wind up the iieXible members 11 or unwind them, to raise or lower the rack.
In use, the rack is lifted until the bottom thereof is above the water in the boiler. T he garments are now laid into the rack, after which it is lowered into the water with the garments. In order to hold the rack in ad justed position a pawl 19 is provided, the said pawl being pivoted to the bracket 17a and engaging the gear wheel of the shaft 16a. Whenever desired, the attachment may be removed from the boiler by loosening the nut of the bolt 5. This permits the sections 3 to swing outwardly, and the entire attach ment may be withdrawn from the boiler, it being understood that the rack or basket is first lifted above the boiler. Since the lift upon the tray is practically vertical, but a small flexible member is required, and the device does not interfere with the placing of the cover on the boiler.
I claim:
1.
