Description
H. L. MYERS.
PAPER BOX.
APPLICATION FILED Nov. 3o, |917'.

` FFME.
HAROLD L. MYERS, 0F MORRSTOWN, NEW JERSEY.
PAPER BOX.
Application filed November 30, 1917.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, HAROLD L. MYERS, a citizen of the United States, and a. resident of Morristown, in the county ot' Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper `Boxes, of' which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a paper box of novel construction, and more particularly to novel and efficient means for securing the bottom of the box to the sides without the use of an adhesive, and for locking the cover'.
. In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a paper box, embodying my invention, showing the box open;
Fig. 2, a similar View, showing the box closed;
Fig. 3, a vertical cross section;
Fig. 4, a plan of the blank; u
Fig. 5, a detail of a modificatlon;
Fig. 6, -a' section on line 6 6 Fig. 5;
Fig. 7, a detail of a further modification, and
Fig. 8, a section on line 8-8 Fig. 7.
lVith the embodiment shown, which illusa rectanffular box, the body of the latter is formed ofiD a pair of sides 1, (constituting the front and back) and a pair of ends 2, which are connected to the sides by an attaching strip 3, and carry flaps 4 as usual. The top or cover 5 hinges on the back, and is provided with a flange 6, turned down at an angle along a creased line 7 The front of the box is furnished with a tongue 8, that extends along and a distance below the upper edge of said front, and is so constituted that its side edges 9 are entirely separated from said front. In this way, the tongue is free to swing on a hinge line 10, located a distance below the upper edge of the box and in parallelism therewith.
With the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 4, the tongue is made integral with the front, by slitting the latter along a pair of parallel lines, to form the detached edges 9 referred to. 4At its free end the tongue extends a distance beyond the front, to form a lip 11, that projects inwardly at an angleto the body of the tongue. rThis lip is furnished with an integral tab or finger piece 12, and

is alined with a slit 13 formed in the angle of crease 7.
In closing the box, the cover is swung down, so that its creased line 7 registers with the upper edge of the box front and that its flange 6 is tucked in back of said front. The tongue 8, is now swung inward (or into substantial parallelism with the front) so that its lip 11 will be projected through slit 13, directly underneath the cover so as to underlie the same and become entirely concealed. In this way, the covei` will be securely fastened down, in a neat. simple and reliable manner. To open the cover, the toncue is swung forward, so as to become withdrawn from underneath the cover and pass out of slit 13. It will be seen that by hinging the tongue to the side of the box at a distance below the upper edge thereof, the tongue has such a reach or radius of oscillation, that it may be readily projected through the slit to a position underneath the cover, without being bent, strained, or otherwise weakened ori mutilated.
rIhe bottom 14 of the box is secured in the manner described, to the back by means oi' a tongue 15 of back 1, turning on hinge line 16, and adapted to be projected through a slot 17 formed at the angle or crease line between the bottom and its flange 18. Inasmuch as it is not necessary to open the bottom after the same has once been secured in position, the tongue 15 is not furnished with a tab.
With the embodiment shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the tab for the cover is omitted, and the front of the box is cut away sidewise of the tongue edges 9, so as to here provide clearances 19, by means of which the tongue may be grasped and manipulated.
With the embodiment shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the tongue in lieu of being made integral with the box front, is made in a separate piece 20 and hingedly secured thereto at a distance below the upper edge of the front by means of a gummed edge 21.
By the means described, the cover may be readily secured when closed, while the bottom will be held in position without the use of adhesives, and in such a firm manner that it will not become dislodged, even if the box is filled with a heavy charge.
For the sii-ke of si1npli0ity, tlie cover :is edge, and disconnected from said front well us the lioi'tonuwlll be designated :is ubere its hinge, and n lip extending iu- J0 vlosul'es in the claim. n'ui'dly from the upper edge of Suid tongue, I chum; sand lip bein; l,V adapted to Vbe projected 5 A. pnper bex comprising n hinged closure through said creuse to directly underlie said lnx-ving n flange und :l vrense :it the buck of closure.
