' chinas, andinia feediigiiilnd .platen rolt Be it known that' 1Gnonon GoULn GOING, a citizen of tlie United States, residing :it Middletown, in the coiintyof Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type- VVrit-in technics, of which the following is a fu I,"'Clear,';indlexact description,` such as 'will-enable'jyotliers skilled yin the art to whhit tippe tii'i'nsftomakel and use the same.
This iiventon particular' y: to .improved paper feeding' hanisin andi-.associated partsftherefofjw l Y 4.

e invention accordinglyconsists 'in the fei'ttiiresl of constriiction, combinations of'` elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplitiedin the construction here-l inafter set frth, far.`d jthe scope of the appli#` cation ofwhich will be indicated inthe folview on theline Fig. 5 is from' View 'of @ein ieeiiieaV4 The invention relates to parts associated. with the traveling carriagel of a typewriter,
`including a rotatable platen roll having c'ooperative therewith a. plurality of sets Ot relativel small spring-pressed rollers@ and gui e rollers. In the drawings the inventonis illustrated as enibodiedin a noise'-\ l less typcvifriter? but it is to be understood Specification of Letters Patent.

that certain .features of tlie invention are susceptible of application with equal advan- .tage to various otherstyles of 'machines Referring iiiore liiii'ticnliirly tothe drawings, there is shown a traveling carriage having end plates 1 l with a cross piece 2;. and mounted forY longitudinal letter-space movement and .iei'tic'iil cnse-shifting'- move- -ment on a r'ail 3. 'A platen roll 4 is rotatably mounted iin tlie'end plates 1, 1","'and is 65 row'ided with extending operating" knobs 5 or inni'iipiiliition. A suitable "operating ing osition 1s 'permitted in a ivel 1 under el-to'ithe. platen roll and. .positioned therebelow are -two vsnp ortigf spindles. 8 and 8. fixed in the end 1'; and havingjourniiled thereonii p urality,` i
shaped :is belLcrnnk levers and carryiiig`ontheir upper arni's 10 rotatable feed rollers 11. The other arms 12 of the brackets 9 elitend towaid each other and beneath the -platen and are engaged by the forked extremitiesof leaf springs' 13 in a'V manner` to' resilientlyurge the feed .rollers against the platen. The arms 12 of the brackets'are refera bly curved in cross sectiOn,-as shown in Fig. 5, and pressed against a loni slidable actuating strip 14 wliic rests on the upper sin-face ofthe carriage rail bearing 15. This sliding member is provided with a eries ofupwardl bent cam: portions 16 contiguousto an below the ad'a- 95 cent arms 12 of the respective pairs of rol er ybrackets 9.' 'Thc'slide 14 is also normally biased toward the left of the carriage b a spring 17 confinedbetween theen 'wa 1'.:
of the carriage and anupstanding lug' 18'100 of the slide. At its o posite end the slide is provided with a ro er bearing 19 journaled about a vertical axis.- i
:The association o the ca'm 16 with the spring-pressed arms 12 ofthe feed roller 1015- brackets ie such that, u on movement of the slide 14 toward the rig t, said bracket arms .Haronipraised against the action of the leaf spring tines, and the brackets accordingly rotate on their supporting splndles 87 87 or 110 .movement ofthe carriage to line-commenctudinally 90 i away from the platen roll 4. For effecting this movement 'of the member 14 there is provided, at the left of the carriage, an operatin handle 20 pivoted adjacent its lower en to the end plate l and terminatii'i'g in a flattened extremity 2l disposed within a V-shaped recess 22 of an upturned end of a lever 23 extending parallel to the slide 1'4 and pivoted medially on' a screw `bolt 24. The opposite end of the lever-23 is rounded to a point and contacts with the roller bearing 19, which normally maintains the castoli' operatirpf lever 2O in the position shown in Fig. 4. ctuation of this lever 20 rearward at right angles to the axis of the platen roll rotates the sublever 23, which in turn, by its engagement with the roller bearing 19, moves the slide 14 to the right to raise the arms l2 and brackets' 9, as described. This movement of the operating lever is per- -mitted to an extentwhich carries the inner end of the sub-lever 23 slightly beyond the diametrical line of the roller 19 parallel to the platen axis, so that the force of the spring 17 ieldingly retains the parts in position witli the feed rollersout of contact with the laten'roll, whereby free adjustment o f t e pape;` is permitted.
There is also provided 8. longitudinal strip 25 extendin parallel'with the platen roll and-'prefera lv slightly belowthe forward ,feed rollers. his strip is carried by stampings 26 pivotally supported, at their rear ends, on the forward s indle f8 "ofi the feed"- roller brackets. On tiis st'ri a 'pair of paper guide cli s 27 are slida ly mounted, the connection etween these parts prefer ably'- comprising spaced-bent ears 28, which are turned over the edges of the member 25 in ajnannegi'alfording free longitudinal edf justmentotheclips. The clips also carryy';A
at theiri'lpper extremities,` paper guiding coil springs 30 extending beneath the latter and tensioncd between the rear spindle 8V and oset lugs 31 of the stampiiigs 2 6. The' stampings 26 are also provided with adjust-1 able set screws 32 having coni'cal extremities disposed-beneath the arms lO'of the corresponding brackets 9. The position of the set screws 32 is such that when the cast-oil' lever 20 is 'operated and the paper feedf roll! ers are moved radially out of contact with the platen roll, the corresponding roller ybracket arms IO'enga-ge with. the set screws in their movement and move the strip 25 about its supliortingf axis to carry the paper clip-rollers therewith out of contact with the platen. By thisarrangement the paper to be adjusted is freed from engagement by the feed rollers and paper clips jointly se that its manipulation is facilitated,
There is also provided, at each end of the carriage, an escapement releasing lever`38 of the carriage when either of theselevers is fspring pressed thereegainsna spring pressed. 'member movable longitudinally of said roll ingcon'tactcn one side; or "the other ofthe 'clips away from. said roll, and means for Amoving said rollers away from said roll to pivoted on the rear spindle 8 and havin a] bent lower arm 34 normally resting Witgi'n the V-sha-ped recess of. an angular arm' 35 connected at is lower front end 4to theunder side of the carriage escapementv rack '36, 70 whereby, upon depression of the upper -forf i ward end of either release lever 33, -an arm 35 is forced rearward 4 and the-"'escapement rack swung upward tolcleargthe teetliwoffa normally interineshing'rotatab e escapmenl;E 1 5 wheel (not shown) located'centrally. of thmachine. I
It is to he noted that the carriage .release lever 33 and the cast-ofi` lever 2O are both' operable by pressure applied at right angles 80 to the longitudinal axis of the'platenroll. By this arrangement. there is noterl'deiy'h` effect vunintentional longitudinal movement.'
operated '85 As many changes could b'efma'deinftlie above construction. and n1any'."`apparently widely different embodimentsjf this inviatition could be made Without departin from the scope thereof, it is intended theta m at;; 9 0f -ter contained in .the above description'- /rshown in the aceompanyingdrawings be interpreted as illustrative 'd' gigdun limitingsense. y
