Be it known that I, SAMUEL L. RoAori, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grinnell, in the county of Poweshiek and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compound Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in compound tools and the principal object of the invention is to provide a combined square, level, plumb, scratchawl and compass.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel means for mounting the center point` of the compass within the butt of the square and in such a way that the same may be used as a gage.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a square having suitable graduations on the blade and carrying considerable data which is useful to builders particularly with reference to roof construction.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a miter square having a pair of blades which may be readily adjusted to various angles.
`Nith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a siderview in elevation of a square constructed in accordance with this invention.

Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view on an enlarged scale illustrating the detailed construction of the miter blade.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates the butt of the square provided with a beveled end 2 arranged on an inclination of forty-five degrees with relation to the longitudinal axis of the butt. The blade 3 extends from the beveled end 2 at right angles to the butt and is arranged so that the edge projects slightly beyond the eX- treme end of the butt. Formed in the outer edge of the butt of the square is a pair of longitudinal slots 5 and the inner edge is formed with a central longitudinally eX- tending slot 6, Positioned in the outer edge of the butt is a suitable spiritlevel 7 as clearly shown in Fig. 3.y Extending longitudinally through the butt intermediate its side edges is a bore'S in which the compass leg is slidably mounted and a slot 9 establishes con'nnunication with the bore through the outer face of the butt.
Pivotally mounted in the slots 5 in the manner illustrated in detail in Fig. '6 are the miter lblades 10 having their free ends provided with the beveled faces 7 and formed in their `opposite ends are openings 12 for the reception of the pivot pin 13 provided at its inner end with suitable threads 14 engaging the threaded bore 15. An enlarged bore 16 extends from the upper end of the threaded bore 15 to the outer face of the butt and seated in said enlarged bore is a suitable sleeve 17, the upper end of which is adapted to engage against the head 18 of the thumb screw 13 while the inner terminal of the sleeve engages against the blade 1'0. It will thus be seen that the blade may be held in various adjusted positions through the medium of the thumb screw.
Pivotally mounted in a similar manner in the slot 6 is the scratch-awl 19 which is pointed as at 20 and is adapted to coperate with the leg 21 of the compass point 22 which is slidably mounted in the bore 8. The leg 21 is formed adjacent the point with an annular flange 23, which is sharpened so as to form a marker in order that the device may be used as a gage. The flange also forms a guard, which prevents the point from sticking too far in the work when the tool is being used as a compass. Suitable graduations 24 are formed on the leg 21 and are arranged so as to indicate the distances between the end of the butt and the flange 23. In order to hold the leg 21 in various adjusted positions, a suitable thumb screw 25 passes through the slot 9 and is threaded into the leg 21 near its inner end and it will thus be seen that by adjusting the thumb screw 25, the leg may be tightened in place or may be loosened so it may clearly move in the bore.
In order that the device may be used and is particularly adapted for use in connection with roofing, a suitable roofing scale 26 is formed on one 'faceno' the blade 3 and the blade is also provided with a scale 2,7 along` its outer edge. Y
