- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 27, 1918.
itpplibafiion filelii September 8, 1917. Serial No. 190,297.
To all whom time; cim'cem:
Be it known that: i, SAMUEL SK:LAR, cit-izen of the United States, resi'dent 6f Brooklyn, county of and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements SaretySti-rraps, of which the following is a specification.
' parts hereafter described and shown "in the accompanying drawings, forming-a material part of this (ili'sclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view "showing a s'addlestirrupmadein'aecordanoewiththe invention, 1
Fig. 2' is a side til'evational view of the same, looking from the opposite side and showing'thestirrup "open. 1 n
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmental sectional view taken through its upper portion.
, Fig. 4 is a sectional View taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a fragmental perspective/view of the detaching plate, and
Fig. 6 is a fragmental front elevation of the same.
In the drawings, the numeral 10 designates a strap by which the stirrup is supported, the looped end 11, of the strap being held by the;' button 12, in such manner that it can be disengaged from the eye 14, aflixed on the top 15, of the stirrup side 16, engaged by the hinge joint bolt 17 with a similarly shaped side 18, the sides 16 and 18 forming together an arch in the usual manner.
The lower end ofthe element 16 is bifurcated, and has passing through the forked ends 19, a screw 20 or similar securing means upon which is pivoted a-leaf 21, formed with the corrugated foot-rest 22, the opposite end having a raised stem 23, in which is rotatably mounted a roller 24, the
stem carrying the roller being receivable in a slot 25, formed in the lower =enid 26 of the side 18 :the roller beingsupported upon the solid material the end of the slot.
A bent flat spring :28 is secured onthe side 18, *by the screw 29, and is engaged bellow the :footrest .22, in such manner as to turnthe same downwardly immediately upon the release of the stem'23.
An arcuately curved plate 30, having en iarged'fiat extensions 31, at its ends carrying rollers 32, adapted to engage with the sides 16":and 18, of the 'stirruplframe, and be guided by the same, is placed partially over and beyond the foot r-est 22, and has engaged with iitan upright '33, having an open slot 34, slidahly engaged with a sleeve 37 mounted ion the b01617 and held operatively between the extending guides 35 and '36 by "the nut '39.
n'orinally down-ward by the spring 44, se-
cured by the-screw 45 in the side 16. g
The detent extends through a slot '46, formed in the side 18, through which passes a fiXed pin 47,-the same being-engaged by air-"acutely formed hook 48 on the lower side of the detent which is further formed with an operating hook extension 49 by means of which it may be manipulated, and which also acts as a limit or stop controlling the opening between the sides 16 and 18 when the detent is raised, the sides separating under the pressure of the coiled spring 50 encircling the bolt 17 within recesses 52 and 54 formed respectively in the sides 16 and .18, the same being interlockingly engaged as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
In operation, the parts being positioned as shown in Fig. 1, the foot is placed upon the foot-rest 22, and the stirrup used in the ordinary manner.
Should, however, the foot be raised by accident or otherwise so as to press the plate 32 upward, the pin 38 comes in contact with the detent, raising the hook from the fixed pin 47 permitting the sides 16 and 18 to be forced apart by the spring in the recess surrounding the bolt 17 thereby withdrawing the stem 23 from the slot 25, this action being facilitated by the roller 24 and permitting the spring 28 to pull the foot-rest downward, thereby freeing the foot from the stirrup in an-obvious manner.
As the release plate 30 is'guided on the front of the sides 16 and 18 it is protected against inadvertent displacement as by'entanglement with brush, etc., and will not act unless considerable pressure is brought to bear upon it.
Having thus described by invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
,1. A saddle stirrup comprised of a pair of hingedly engaged, downwardly extending sides, means for holding said sides in operative position, a foot-rest hingedly engaged with one of said sides, a stem formed with said foot-rest enterable into an opening formed in the other of said sides, a slidable plate arranged over said foot-rest, and means combined therewith for releasing said foot-rest, when said plate is moved upward.
2. In a saddle stirrup comprising a pair of hingedly engaged sides, a foot-rest hingedly engaged with one of said sides, an extension formed with said foot-rest engageable with the other of said sides, means for normally holding said sides in operative position, means for releasing said sides, means for opening said sides outwardly whereby said foot-rest is disengaged and means for turning said foot-rest downward when released.
3. In a riding saddle stirrup, the combination with a pair of downwardly extending sides, a hinge by which said sides are joined together at their upper ends, a detent pivotally engaged with said sides having part enterable through the other of said sides by means of which it is held in operative position, a sliding plate having end projections; rollers carried in said projections contractible with said sides, an upright on said plate, means carried by said upright for disengaging said detent, a foot rest hingedly engaged with one 01 said sides, an extension formed therewith, a roller in said extension, said roller being adapted to engage with an opening formed in theother of said sides, and a spring adapted to press said sides apart thereby releasing said foot rest co-ineidently with the disengagement of said detent.
4:. In a riding saddle stirrup, the combination with a support strap, and an eye with which said strap is engaged, of a pair of separable curved side elements hingedly engaged at the upper end thereof, said eye being rigid with one of said side elements, a foot-rest hinged at the lower end of one of said side elements, a stem formed with said foot-rest adapted to enter a recess formed in the other of said side elements, a roller carried in said stem, a spring adapted to move said foot-rest downward when released, means for holding said side elements in operative position, an arcuate plate arranged partially over said foot-rest adapted to make contact with a foot, means for guiding said arcuate plate vertically, means formed with said arcuate plate adapted to release said holding means, and means for separating said side elements when released.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
SAMUEL SKLAR.
