Description
C. M. BIEDMA.
SCHOOLBENCH.
Patented Aug. 27, 1918.
7 l TE FFiQ.
SCHOOL-IBENCH.
To all wkom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARLOS M. BIEDMA, a citizen of the Argentine Republic, residing at'No. 3310 Santa Fe st., Buenos Aires, Ar-
gentina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in School-Benches, of which the followino is a specification.
This invention re ates to certain new and useful improvementsin school benches and has for its object to provide a school bench of simple construction and adapted to various uses.
A further object of the inventionis to provide a school bench the height of which may be regulated at will, the seat and desk being independently and movably mounted on a common support.
In Order that th invention may be clearly understood and easily carried into practice, it will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view ofa school bench according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a central sectional elevation of the same with the desk and drawer in its closed position.
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail of the desk in one of its open positions and Fig. 4 shows the desk and drawer in an alternative position.
Similar characters refer to the same or like parts throughout the above figures.
5 and 6 are two vertical supports of wood, cast iron or any other convenient material which at their lower ends are connected by a transverse piece 7. Said supports 5 and 6 are provided at their inner sides with two parallel guideways 8 and 9 in which frames 10 and 11 carrying respectively the seat 12 and the desk and drawer may be slidably mounted.
Ihe seatcarrying frame consists of two lateral supports suitably connected to each other and having a longitudinally disposed slot 18 which allows setting the frame at any desired height, by means of a screw and nut connection. Said screw and nut, indicated at 14., are introduced through an orifice made in the front guide-way 8, the nut being screwed on when the frame has been placed at the desired height.
The rear guide-way 9 is provided with a series of longitudinally disposed holes 15, which by means of a pin 16 or the like allow the height of the desk-and-drawer carrying Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 6, 1918.
Patented Aug. 27, 1918. Serial No. 220,775.
This rear frame 11 consists of two side members 17 and 18 connected at their upper and lower ends by means of transverse boards 19 and 20, the upper one being used as an inkstandholder. The outer faces of the sides 17 and 18 are provided with extensions or bosses 21 and 22 respectively which run in the longitudinal guide-ways 9 of the main supports 5 and 6.
A case or drawer 23 has its sides 24: pivotally onnected near their upper end, as at 25, tothe sides Hand 18 of the frame 11. A small board 26 hinged at 27 is held closed by means of a book 28 and allows the drawer 23, when in its vertical position, to be used as. a bookstand.
Another board 29 is pivotally mounted at 30 to the sides 1-7 and 18 of the frame 11 above the board 19, and at the rear of the same. This board 29, when in its vertical position acts as a cover or lid for the said drawer 23. The drawer 23 may be placed at different angles and firmly secured in position by means of two lateral supports 31 articulated to the outer sides of the drawer walls 24. Said supports 31 are each provided with teeth engaging with a stop 32 fixed to the inner sides of the frame sides 17 and 18.
As may be seen from the foregoing description and from the accompanying drawings, the board or table 29 may be firmly secured in different positions in which it may be used as a desk (Fig. 3) or as an extension of the open drawer 23, when this latter is used for handy work.
As may be easily understood the height of the desk and the height of the scat may be independently regulated within a large range, which allows the bench to be used by pupils of very difieren't ages and sizes.
constructional modifications may be introduced without departing from the spirit of the invention which is clearly set forth in the annexed claiming clauses.
What I claim is:
1. In a school bench. the combination of a pair of spaced, parallel vertical supports having their inner sides provided with front and rear longitudinal guides, the guides on one support being disposed opposite those on the other support; connectin means between said supports; a frame isposed benesting means tween said supports and siidablyengaging 5 'anne; means for retaining; said frame in ad-V justed position; a frame, separate from the first-named frame, disposed in between said standards ing the rear guides so as to be adjustable independently of and relatifely to said tirstnanied i'ran1e;fnieans for retaining the seeond-nanied :t'raine j in adjusted position; a drawer pivoted to said second-nained frame for bodily swinging movement independently 0t and relatively to that frame; said drawer having means for releasably supporting it in substantially horizontal position andadapted to swing downwardly into vertical position between the sides of said second-named frame; and a pivoted cover for said drawer movable into position to open or close the same in either oi its said positions.
in a school bench, the Combination of apair oi spaced, parallel vertical supports having their inner sides pro 'ided with oppositely-located, longitudinal guides, con- 7 between said supports; a frame disposed between said supports and comprising a pair of vertical side members arranged against said supports and slidably of this patent ma? rear thereof,
l ll' and slidaJ enga;z
engaging said guides, andupper and lower cross-pieces connecting said side members; means for retaiuingsaid frame in adjusted position; a swinging drawer having its sides pivoted to the trains sides slightly below the upper Cross-piece; means for releasably supporting said drawer in substantiallyhorizontal, rearwardly-extending position; and a b ard hinged to said frame sides above and to the rear of said upper cross-piece to swing with relation to the drawer forwardly into a position in which it extends forwardiy across and rests upon said upper crosspiece, or it extends over and rests upon-said drawerwhenthe latter oeeupies its rearward-ly-eib tending horizontal position said drawer be ing ada'ptedto swing downwardly into the space between said upper and lower crosspieoes, and said board to swingdownwardly relatirely to said drawer into position to act as eover'therefor.
in testimony whereoi l affix ni-y'signatnre in the presence ottwo' witnesses.
