To all whom, it may concern:
Be itlmown that I, LAURENCE A. DICK- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby, State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Musical Mechanical Toys, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to musical mechanical toys.
An object'of this invention is to provide a rolling toy which may be controlled by hand to produce a mechanical sound when operated; to provide the toy with means for interrupting the mechanical sound and at will during the operation of the toy; to provide a toy embodying a novel construction for producing wind pressure; and to provide a toy with novel means for pro- D ducing wind by the utilization of wind pipes or the like.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a relatively strong and simply constructed toy capable of withstanding hard usage; which requires but little pressure in its operation, and a toy which may be economically manufactured.
The above and various other objects and advantages will be in part described and in part understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal vertical section through the upper portion of the pneumatic, the wind chest and one of the pipes, the controlling valve being also shown.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designate-s a cross-piece which constitutes the body of the frame and to the opposite ends of which is secured a pair of lugs 11 constituting bearings for an axle 12 provided near opposite ends and at the inner sides of the lugs 11 with crank portions 13. Wheels 14 are fixed upon the opposite ends of the axle 12 at the outer sides of the lugs 11, are adapted to support the toy and are adapted by their traction with the ground to rotate the axle 12.
The cross-piece 10 is provided with a suitable tongue or handle 15 by means of which the toy may be propelled by hand or otherwise. The cross-piece 10 also carries a leaf spring 16 which extends upwardly and is suitably curved, substantially S-shaped, to form a resilient support. Fixed to the upper end of the support is a lower leaf 17 of a pneumatic, the leaf 17 overhanging the axle 12 and the frame of the toy. A hinged leaf 18 is connected to the fixed leaf 17 at the tongue end of the toy and is connected near its free end by links 19 to the crank portions 13 at opposite sides of the pneumatic. This pneumatic or bellows has secured across its upper side, and preferably at its hinged end a wind chest 20 which communicates with the pneumatic through a pipe or neck 21 which is secured directly over the outlet opening 22 formed in the upper leaf 18 of the bellows. The wind chest 20 carries a plurality of pipes or whistles 23- of the desired length and constructed to produce sound by vibration. of air passing intov the pipes 23 from the wind chest 20. The upper end of the neck 21 is open, and a plug valve 24 is adapted to close the same at times, the valve 24 being carried upon an arm 25 hinged at 26 upon the neck 21 and being normally held in position to open the valve 24 by spring 27 secured at opposite ends respectively to lever 25 and the outer end of the wind chest. The lever 25 is preferably returned upon itself and has secured to its free end a cord 28 which extends in the direction of the handle or pull 15 and may be manually drawn sufficiently taut to overcome the spring 27 and closethe valve 24. When the valve 24 is closed, and the wheels 14 are turned, the air compressed by the bellows or pneumatic is directed from the neck 21 into the wind chest 20 and subsequently into the tubes 23. The bellows has an air intake opening 29 in the lower leaf 17 and is inclosed by flexible wall 30 which is secured about the marginal edges of the leaves 17 and 18.
It is believed that the operation of the device is apparent for when the handle 15 is either drawn or pushed the wheels 14 travel over the ground and operate the hinged leaf 18 of the bellows through the links or connecting rods 19. Air is taken into the bellows through opening 29 when the bellows is expanded and the flap valve of the opening closes upon the collapse of the bellows whereupon the air is emitted not through the outlet opening 22. A child drawing the to need only pull the string 28 to close the valve "2% when it is desired to sound the whistles or pipes.
it is, of course, understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described parts of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.
I claim 1. In a musical toy, the combination of a wheeled frame, a plurality of sound. tubes mounted on the frame, an air compressing means on the frame and having connection with the wheels to actuate the compressing means by movement'of the frame, and hav ing connection with the tubes for simultaneously sounding the same.
2. In a musical toy the combination of a frame,v wheels supporting the'frame and bellows on the frame, a connection between the wheels and the bellows for operating the latter, an open neck connected to the bellows, a sound tube connected to the neck, and a valve adapted to close the neck to de fiect wind pressure from the bellows to he tube.
