To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERRY /Vnsrovnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clymer, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signals, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in signals and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with railways; and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved signal wherein the same is caused to operate by the rolling stock.
It is also an object of the invention, to provide a device of this general character of an electric type and wherein the operating circuit is under control of a plurality of circuit closers adapted to be operated by the rolling stock for causing the requisite operation of the signal and wherein certain of the closers so cooperate that after one train has passed thereover the same are so adjusted as to assure the requisite operation of the signal upon the passing of a second train in the same direction.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved signal whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to de scribe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in top plan of a signal constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention with the top plate of the housing omitted Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken through the housing as disclosed in big. 1;

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, H denotes a housing of predetermined configuration and dimensions and positioned to one side of and in close proximity to a rail R comprised in a track structure, and the side or vertical wall of the housing H next to the rail R is provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced and vertically directed slots 1. Through each of the slots 1 is disposed an arm 2 having its outer end pivot-ally engaged with the vertically arranged post 3 mounted for sliding movemengl in the bracket 4 carried by the hous mg The upper end of the post 8 is provided with the elongated shoe S which is adapted to be engaged by the wheels of a train to depress the same.
The arm 2 is pivotally mounted intermediate its length, as at 5, with the standard 6 positioned within the housing H and the in ner end of said arm 2 is pivotally engaged, as at 7, with an extremity of the bell lever 8. The opposite extremity of each of the bell levers 8 coacting with two adjacent shoes has pivotally engaged therewith the arm or link 9 which is pivotally engaged with the blade B of a circuit closer.
As herein disclosed, the circuit closers are two in number and are lndentified as C and C The stationary contact 10 of the inner circuit closer C is electrically connected through the medium of the conductors a with the source of electrical energy E herein set forth as dry cells arranged within the housing H at the opposite ends thereof. Leading from the source of electrical energy E to the signal G is the conductor 6. Leading from the signal G and in electrical connection with the stationary contact 11 of the second or end circuit closer C is the The blades B of the closers C and C are electrically connected by the conductor g. The blade 13 of the inner closer C is constantly urged in a direction away from its coacting stationary contact 10 through the medium of the retractile member 15, herein disclosed as a conventional coil spring, which is interposed between the inner end portion of the adjacentarm 2 and the bottom of the housing H,
Presuming a train to be traveling in the direction as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1, it will be perceived that the shoe 5 co acting with the circuit closer C will be depressed resulting the blade B of said circuit closer C contacting with the stationary contact 11 or said circuit closer When the shoe S of the circuit closer C is depressed it will be at once self-evident that the contact of the blade B of said circuit closer C with the stationary contact 10 thereof will result in a closing or a circuit which will cause the signal G, which is oi": a gong type, to sound. It will also be at once appreciated that the member 15 will serve to automatically breal; the contact between the blade B and the stationary contact 10 of the circuit closer C whereby the signal G will be caused to intermittently operate as a train is passing over the shoes S.

It will also be at once self-evident that after a train has passed over the several shoes S the shoe S coacting with the closer C will be leftelevated so that the signal G may be caused. to operate by the passing of a train following.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a signal constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material depa "ture from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation or the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.

1. In combination with an electric signal and an operating circuit therefor, two circuit closers interposed in said circuit, one of said closers being positively operated into either open or closed position, the second circuit close-r being positively operated into closed position, and means coacting with the second closer for automatically adjusting the same into open position independently of the first closer member.
2. In combination with an electric signal and an operating circuit therefor, two circuit closers interposed in said circuit, each of said closers including a stationary contact nd a movable contact, a rock lever operatively engaged with each of the movable contacts, means coacting with each or" the levers for moving the movable contact into closed position, and means coacting with one of the levers for maintaining the coacting movable contact normally in open position.
3. In combination with an electric signal and an operating circuit therefor, two circuit closers interposed in said circuit, each of said closers including a stationary contact and a movable contact, a rock lever operatively engaged with each of the movable contacts, means coacting with each of the levers for moving the movable contact into closed position, means coacting with one of the levers for maintaining the coacting movable contact normally in open position, and additional means coacting with the lever of the second movable contact for adjusting said second movable contact into open posi tion.

In combination with an electric signal and an operating circuit therefor, two circuit closers interposed in said circuit, each or said closers including a stationary con tact and a movable contact, a rock lever opcratively engaged with each of the movable contacts, means coacting with each of the levers for moving the movable contact into closed position, means coacting with one of the lev rs for maintaining the coacting movable contact normally in open position, a third rock lever, means for imparting move ment thereto, and an operative connection between the second and third levers where by the second lever is caused to adjust the coacting movable contact coacting therewith into open position upon movement of the third rock lever in one direction.
